Ces idéaux expriment une préférence qui a existé de longue date dans la tradition intellectuelle anglaise, pour une forme organique d'organisation sociale, non gâtée par le développement industriel et l'égalité politique. De ce modèle découle une image pénétrante du véritable rôle de la femme, qui, dans la maison, s'avère être celui d'épouse et de mère, et qui, implicitement, nourrit la réflexion actuelle dans les sciences sociales et l'aménagement de l'environnement. Recent debates over the rights and wrong of Jewish circumcision in Britain seem curiously uniform... more Recent debates over the rights and wrong of Jewish circumcision in Britain seem curiously uniformed by any historical understanding. This article considers the significance of the circumcision motif in mid-eighteenth century Britain, and goes on to investigate the way in which this motif has been subsequently deployed by political, religious and medical writers up until the twentieth century. It is argued that the language in which Jewish circumcision has been discussed can be categorised into four distinctive rhetorical modes or discourses: namely those of traditional Tory English nationalism; enlightenment rationalism; British evangelicalism; and British medical professionalism. As only a handful of Jewish Studies scholars, such as Frank Felsenstein, Sander Gilman, Roy Wolper and Sarah Kocher, seem to have previously addressed this topic in any sustained manner, this article derives much of its argument from original primary research.

This article explores some of the challenges and opportunities facing academic historians involve... more This article explores some of the challenges and opportunities facing academic historians involved in large British public history projects and examines how government priorities and the particular ways in which public funds are deployed can affect the critical intellectual content of such projects. To this end it first broadly outlines the context in which British public history has recently developed and then focuses on my own experiences as leader of a British public history project on 1001 years of ethnic minorities in Bristol, England, which was sponsored by the "England's Past for Everyone" initiative.
