I try to read and absorb knowledge from diverse viewpoints in order to gain better knowledge of a situation, but the reality is that most conservative bloggers and pundits just suck like that massive hole in the universe. There’s very little to be gained from reading through an echo chamber of “liberal media,” “9/11 changed everything,” and “TEH GHEY IZ TEH EVILZOR.”

Libertarian output and the general autistic technowonkery of technology bloggers are about as far right as I can go without wanting to swan dive off a building, and so it was that I came across this interesting item about libertarian activist Michelle Shinghal appearing on Tucker Carlson’s show to pimp Ron Paul.

First of all, there’s something deeply amusing about an insanely closeted queer and admitted gay-basher like Carlson doing his best to prove his manly cred by slobbering over an attractive redhead like Shingal. Carlson is such a mess of masculinity issues that it’s almost painful to watch. Here’s a free clue–wearing bowties and prepster mullet haircuts does not grow hair on your chest.

Second, I think it’s hilarious how even though Shinghal has apparently long since left the stage behind, the placard for the interview reads “BLOGGER AND EX-STRIPPER” in huge letters. I’m more than willing to bet Carlson and his producers thought they were going to get another Miss Teen South Carolina, or Obama Girl at best, and he was totally shocked that she could string sentences together coherently. Of course, Shinghal was wise to the game, as you can tell from the white t-shirt showing off the goods.

Third, while I’ve certainly met my share of ugly male libertarians, I notice that the most prominent female libertarian activists and writers (Shinghal, Megan McArdle/Jane Galt, Kerry Howley) tend to be very attractive. It certainly makes me more disposed to listen to their viewpoints, even if I’ll probably end up disagreeing with them in the end. I don’t meet a lot of black libertarians, VERY few poor libertarians, and not a lot of unattractive female libertarians either. Madison Avenue ethics at work.
And finally, you gotta wonder what women who support Ron Paul think of his strenuously anti-abortion stance, and generally lousy voting record on social issues overall?
