In what has to be the most bizarrely parsed non-denial denial since the last one I read, Mark Foley’s father confessor admits to loving him in the way that only two men…er, brothers can: “

We were friends and trusted each other as brothers and loved each other as brothers,” Mercieca said. Asked if their relationship was sexual in nature, the priest replied: “it wasn’t.” His comments came after the Florida newspaper published a story on Thursday that quoted him as saying in an interview that he had an inappropriate two-year relationship with Foley in the 1960s that included massaging the boy in the nude, but he did not specifically remember having sex. He was not quoted in the story as saying they had any “one night stands.” However, the newspaper reported that he said there was one night when he was in a drug-induced stupor and he couldn’t clearly remember what happened.

So, the priest smoked manpole, but didn’t inhale, is that it? Seriously, if you’re going to confess to sharing a hotel room, a sauna, AND giving massages in the nude to young boys, what the hell would make you think that anyone is going to believe you if you say you didn’t share the sausage? Why did this guy even bother? More to the point, why does it matter? If this is true, what this guy did to Foley is reprehensible, but it doesn’t justify Foley’s own conduct. It may have influenced it and made it understandable, but it doesn’t make it right. Even if it seemed to be the lay of the land, so to speak. *snerk*
