A little more completed today as he inches ever closer to completion. Cleaned up some areas that looked poorly (around the eyes for one), painted the wing membrane a mix of Dwarf Flesh and Mechrite Red to give it a dark pink look (looks lighter in the photos) which I’ll highlight lighter into a kind of a fleshy tone. Also painted all the claws and bone protruding from his back with Bleached Bone and then darkened from there. Finally painted highlights to the his base.

The One Ring September Painting Challenge Part III

Posted in Reviews / Uncategorized / Misc. on September 5, 2011 by botwtAs I was painting my Angmar Orc Captain I was playing around with different looks to the blood…being that the hobbit head wasn’t freshly cut off and placed onto his helmet spike I couldn’t see using a bright red. I’ve noticed this trend when people paint zombies making them look rotten, but then the blood oozing from them has a fresh look…that just bugs the shit out of me…hehe. So I decided to make a quickie tutorial on how to achieve a realistic looking bloody effect for your model. The paints I’ll use for this tutorial will be Games Workshop’s Black Ink, Devlan Mud and Asurmen Blue…for the red I’ll be using Tamiya Clear Red. Using these paints will keep the “blood” looking wet as the Tamiya Clear Red has a high gloss effect to it.
The first example (left to right) is the Tamiya Red mixed with some Devlan Mud in a 4:1 ratio. This knocks down the extreme brightness of the red and gives a fresh, oxygenated blood effect.
The next sample is the Tamiya Red and the Asurmen Blue in about a 3:1 ratio. This will give a nice fresh bloody look to clothing and bandages, or a more dried look to weapons that haven’t been wiped clean immediately.
The third mixture is Tamiya Red with the Black Ink added. This mix is about 5:1 red to black, and will give you a look where the blood is very thick, drying or rotting (good for undead or corpses).
Hope this helps you with a more realistic look to your blood effects on your models and sorry the picture wasn’t perfect, but you can still get a pretty good idea of what the blood will look like.

Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy on September 2, 2011 by botwtBefore the official “Skully” was released I had created my own with the use of the conversion sprue that was originally available from the Battle Games in Middle-earth magazine. But now that I have the official model, the converted model of him needed to be revamped. So I decided to turn him into a captain for my Angmar army seeing how I am tooling around with that force presently. I clipped off the skull on the top of his head and replaced it with a disembodied hobbit head…added a bit of gore and there you have it…”Skully” in his youth running with the boys in Angmar, or an overzealous admirer of his seriously hip style.

The One Ring September Painting Challenge: Monsters (WIP)
Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy on September 1, 2011 by botwtWell, Monsters won the vote for this month’s challenge and of course I’ll be working on my Terror of Arnor (modified Varghulf model). I have been tossing up the ideas of painting him black, grey, brown and even a ghostly scheme, but think I have settled on him being white furred with a grey skin. This may change, but for now this is the plan. Here is a picture of how he looks so far, but lots of work still to do.
