Plo Koon (Redux) Redux

Posted in Sci-Fi on September 7, 2010 by botwt

Ever since I painted this miniature I’ve had problems with it, and now I think I have figured it out. It’s not that fact that his lightsaber is not lit, nor the base, nor the paint scheme (as I have played around with all of those)…it was his head. The expressionless pose and straight forward head killed the conversion for me. So now I think I have finally fixed this model and I am finally pleased with the result by simply having him look slightly to his right.

Chewie & 3PO

OMG, I love Knight Models!

Tabletop Gaming News posted an article today that Knight Models has released a 30mm Chewbacca and C3PO!! Being that Chewie is one of my all time favorite Star Wars characters I couldn’t be more happy to see him produced by a company like Knight Models! Their high quality miniature are exceptional and this one looks to be no different. You guys are definitely getting my very next twenty spot!

Gondor

Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy on September 6, 2010 by botwt

My first army in Lord of the Rings SBG was my Gondor/Minas Tirith army. I started out with the Return of the King set that gave me 24 warriors and then added on from there. Well after several years of collecting I’ve managed to rid myself of all the plastic armored Gondor units and now I have nothing left but metal pieces (and a few plastic rangers). Here is a sample of a few of my models for that army.

The way I tried to paint the armor was fairly simple…I like the look of NMM, but I cannot seem to be able to pull it off very well, so I took a different approach. I painted the armor all grey, washed it with a very watered down black and then finally highlighted the raised bits of armor with Boltgun Metal (GW) and Chainmail (GW).

The bases are a simple rubble look to resemble the ruins of Osgiliath or the siege of Minas Tirith (like the whitish rock I painted for Faramir’s base). My Rangers of Gondor however ended up with dirt and grassy bases…not sure why I did this, but I may revisit this decision like I did for my ranger version of Faramir.

I also had to have Boromir in this army, and when I started LotR SBG it was right after The Two Towers was released and Boromir in his Gondorian armor was a must for me. However there wasn’t an official model yet or any rules for him. I set about converting my own out of a spare Elendil model I had laying about. After butchering my Boromir for his head, horn and shield and decapitating Elendil I came up with this piece to lead my Gondorian troops to victory. I must say it is a hell of alot nicer that the official GW release…and he is tall like he is supposed to be.

Hobbits are just awesome (to me anyway) and Peregrin Took was a must have, and being the way that I am I had to add that touch of ‘something’ to my model. I removed his helmeted head and replaced it with the head from one of the other Pippin models and came up with this.

So now I am working on another conversion of Beregond…not that I am unhappy with the one shown above in the first photo, but when I saw the Gondor commander in the set I purchased all I could think of was…Citadel Guard. Another option for this conversion might be to create Irolas, a character Peter Jackson created for the Return of the King film.

I still need to remove this model’s head and attach the bow arm…the other thing is the orc is going to have to go. I think I’ll end up having him stand on a stone instead.

So that is my basic Gondor army without my fiefdom allies I have hanging in the wind.

Greedo

Posted in Sci-Fi on September 5, 2010 by botwt

Picked up a Greedo miniature really cheap and gave him a new paint job as the one he had was of course poorly done. I was tempted for a moment to give him the Kenner ’70s action figure look, but then he would have been worse off than he was with the stock paint job. So went looking for a good photo to try and use for a guide and came up with this one.

Took some creative liberties with his boots and also gave him gloves; all in all not my best work, but I think generally he came out pretty well.

Oh yeah, Han shot first.

Ash vs George A. Romero Mark II (Completed)

Well, Happy 40th Birthday Mark…hope you enjoy this as much as my brother Christopher did his and as much as I did making it!

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader

Posted in Sci-Fi on September 2, 2010 by botwt

I had the spare head of Anakin Skywalker left over after my Kit Fisto conversion and while working on my friend’s birthday diorama I thought that making a freshly born Darth Vader might be kinda cool (as Anakin in general just wasn’t all that cool and only became interesting to me once he became evil).

So I Googled an image of evil Anakin and set about laying the basic paint job on the head to see if I should really purchase another of Knight Models Anakin Skywalker miniatures.

Still need to add shading to his hair and clean up the paint job on his skin…also think I may highlight the center of his orange iris a brighter yellow, it just doesn’t see to be showing enough as it is now.

So after dinking around for a few minutes I think I will pick up another of the Anakin minis and make a nice little pre-burned alive Darth Vader.

Ash vs George A. Romero Mark II

Posted in Reviews / Uncategorized / Misc., Sci-Fi on September 1, 2010 by botwt

Been working away on my best friend’s birthday present the last couple of days…same basic diorama I created for my brother’s birthday gift. I went with a more muted color palette this time around, but also added a creepy little fellow crawling up the back of the archway as well (would have added that to my brother’s diorama but didn’t have one of Mantic’s ghouls at the time).

The blood is a mixture of GW Black Ink and Tamiya Clear Red…once mixed together you get a nice dark bloody looking red and when it is dry is remains wet looking. It really gives a very realistic look to the gore.

So now it is on to working on Ash and then just finish some touch ups on the base and Romero then his 40th birthday present is completed!
