Román se odehrává v autorově rodné Normandii a děj začíná v přímořské obci Port-Dieu, ležící proti anglickým Normanským ostrovům, v níž žije odedávna námořnická rodina Kalbrisů, jejíž nejmladší syn Roman zde v první osobě vypráví o svém dětství. Roman stále touží uprchnout a dát se najmout na loď jako plavčík. Než k tomu dojde, prožije mnohá dobrodružství.
