{"id":5304,"date":"2016-10-25T08:04:55","date_gmt":"2016-10-25T15:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=5304"},"modified":"2017-11-20T14:17:32","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T22:17:32","slug":"reconciling-activity-and-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/2016\/10\/reconciling-activity-and-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"Reconciling Activity and Decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In preparing to work \u00a0with a client on developing their learning science understanding, I realized that I was using two representations about meaningful learner interaction that could be seen to be conflicting.  \u00a0On the one hand I talk about using <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/2015\/12\/scenarios-and-conceptual-clarity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decisions<\/a> as a basis for design, and on the other I refer to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/2012\/03\/reimagining-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">activity<\/a>-based learning. And I have separate diagrams for each.  \u00a0What was necessary was reconciling activity and decisions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/decisionsstructure\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5307\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DecisionsStructure.png\" alt=\"decision structure\" width=\"217\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a>So first, \u00a0I talk about how we should be putting learners in the place to make decisions like they&#8217;ll need to be making \u00a0<em>after<\/em> the learning experience.  \u00a0We need to put them in a context, and then a particular event triggers the need for a decision. And then there are options for actions to take.  \u00a0From the design point of view, there are correct answers, and \u00a0wrong answers. These wrong answers, of course, should reflect where learners go wrong, reflecting reliable misconceptions. People don&#8217;t make errors randomly, mostly, but instead reflect inappropriate models being brought to bear.  \u00a0And after their choices, there are consequences. I like for those consequences to be represented first, before the external feedback comes in.  \u00a0This is just a better multiple choice question (or other canned interaction), but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If the consequences of the initial decision  \u00a0lead to a new situation and new decisions, now we&#8217;re talking a full scenario (whether implemented via branching or a full simulation-driven experience). Note that this is also the structure of a game.  \u00a0In fact, \u00a0this emerged from game designer Sid Maier&#8217;s quote about how games are a series of interesting decisions. Hence, serious games are a series of interesting <em>and important<\/em> decisions!  \u00a0And, of course, this is programmed in advance (if we&#8217;re not talking about <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/2010\/11\/the-power-of-role-based-e-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online role playing<\/a>), so learners get feedback without necessary human intervention (though there&#8217;re powerful benefits to collecting discussion \u00a0<em>around<\/em> the learning challenge).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/activitystructure\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5305\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ActivityStructure.png\" alt=\"activity structure\" width=\"219\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a>However, I also have \u00a0characterized learning as a series of activities, and those activities generate some work product and are (ideally) annotated with reflections. \u00a0These \u00a0products can (and arguably should be) \u00a0cast as a response to some storyline that has them in a role related to the ones they&#8217;re likely to be in after the learning experience (even with some <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/2014\/02\/exaggeration-and-alignment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exaggeration<\/a>).  \u00a0These are complex outputs that are unlikely to be aut0-marked, and can be the basis of either or both of peer or mentor review.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits here are that when we make the work product reflect real practice, we&#8217;re developing a suite of outcomes beyond just the content. We can require different formats \u00a0&#8211;  \u00a0presentations, spreadsheets, documents \u00a0&#8211; \u00a0developing modeling and communication skills. We can require group work, developing interpersonal skills. And we&#8217;re developing time management and project management skills as well. The tradeoff is the amount of mentoring time.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge, then, is to identify the differences, and then think about when you&#8217;d use each.  \u00a0The obvious difference is the simpler  \u00a0structure \u00a0for decisions.  \u00a0 While a branching scenario or programmed simulation\/game is more than one decision, it&#8217;s still more linear than \u00a0creating a product.  \u00a0Developing a product is typically a series of many decisions! Hence the difficultly for auto-marking, but also the power for learning.
