{"id":4950,"date":"2016-04-20T08:10:57","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T15:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=4950"},"modified":"2016-04-19T07:39:22","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T14:39:22","slug":"deeper-learning-reading-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/2016\/04\/deeper-learning-reading-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Deeper Learning Reading List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, for my last post, I had the Revolution Reading <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=4946\" target=\"_blank\">List<\/a>, and it occurred to me that I&#8217;ve been reading a bit about deeper learning design, too, so I thought I&#8217;d offer some pointers here too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The starting point would be Julie Dirksen&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0134211286\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0134211286&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpwwwotteco-20&amp;linkId=6A2NPUICREOQ4GCB\" target=\"_blank\">Design For How People Learn<\/a><\/em> (already in it&#8217;s 2nd edition). It&#8217;s a very good interpretation of learning research applied to design, and very readable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A new book that&#8217;s very good is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0674729013\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0674729013&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpwwwotteco-20&amp;linkId=FPW6UNXN5MZC44VY\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Make It Stick<\/em><\/a>, by Peter Brown, Henry Roediger III, and Mark McDaniel, the former being a writer who&#8217;s worked with two scientists to take learning research into 10 principles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And let me mention two Ruth Clark books. One with Dick Mayer from UCSB, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1119158664\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1119158664&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpwwwotteco-20&amp;linkId=3S2UTLKORDUPUSZB\" target=\"_blank\"><em>e-Learning and the Science of Instruction<\/em><\/a>, that focuses on the use of media.  \u00a0A second with Frank Nguyen and the wise John Sweller, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0787977284\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0787977284&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpwwwotteco-20&amp;linkId=CUBLY5ZY6BWECGFB\" target=\"_blank\">Efficiency in Learning<\/a><\/em>, focuses on cognitive load (which has many implications, including some overlap with the first).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Patti Schank has come out with a concise compilation of research called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.td.org\/Digital-Resources\/Digital-Content\/Book-Chapters\/Science-of-Learning-Chapter-1-11\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Science of Learning <\/em><\/a>that&#8217;s available to ATD members. Short and focused with her usual rigor.  \u00a0If you&#8217;re not an ATD member, you can read her \u00a0blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.td.org\/Publications\/Author.aspx?ItemId=80E7B9DB561A41FB8B99A3BF45A5A32B\" target=\"_blank\">posts<\/a> that contributed (click &#8216;View All&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dorian Peters book on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0321903048\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0321903048&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpwwwotteco-20&amp;linkId=Q7JKVWLFSCMP526N\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Interface Design for Learning<\/em><\/a> also has some good learning principles as well as interface design guidance.  \u00a0It&#8217;s not the same for learning as for doing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Of course, a classic is a compilation of research by a blue-ribbon team lead by John Bransford, \u00a0<em><a href=\"www.nap.edu\/openbook.php?record_id=9853\" target=\"_blank\">How People Learn<\/a><\/em>, (online or downloadable).  \u00a0Voluminous, but pretty much state of the art.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Another classic is \u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/elc.fhda.edu\/transform\/resources\/collins_brown_holum_1991.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cognitive Apprenticeship<\/em><\/a> \u00a0model of Allen Collins &amp; John Seely Brown. A holistic model abstracted across some seminal work, and quite readable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Science of Learning Center has an academic integration of research to instruction theory by Ken Koedinger, et al, \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/pact.cs.cmu.edu\/pubs\/KLI-KoedingerCorbettPerfetti2012-pre.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The Knowledge-Learning-Instruction Framework<\/a>,<\/em> that&#8217;s freely available as a PDF.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I&#8217;d be remiss if I don&#8217;t point out the Serious eLearning <a href=\"http:\/\/elearningmanifesto.org\" target=\"_blank\">Manifesto<\/a>, which has 22 research principles underneath the 8 values that differentiate serious elearning from typical versions.  \u00a0If you buy in, please sign on!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And, of course, I can point you to my own series for Learnnovators on <a href=\"http:\/\/learnnovators.com\/?s=deeper+elearning\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Deeper ID<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So there you go with some good material to get you going.
