like a pro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In other fields of endeavors, there is a science behind the approaches.  \u00a0In civil engineering, it&#8217;s the properties of materials.  \u00a0In aviation, it&#8217;s aeronautical engineering.  \u00a0In medicine, it&#8217;s medical science.  \u00a0If you&#8217;re going to be a professional in your field, you have to know the science.  \u00a0So, two questions: is there a science of learning, and is it used.  \u00a0The answers appear to be yes and no.  \u00a0And yet, if you&#8217;re going to be a learning designer or <a title=\"previous reflections\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=4006\" target=\"_blank\">engineer<\/a>, you should know the science and be using it.<\/p>\n<p>There is a science of learning, and it&#8217;s increasingly easy to find.  \u00a0That&#8217;s the premise behind the Serious eLearning <a title=\"the manifesto site\" href=\"http:\/\/elearningmanifesto.org\" target=\"_blank\">Manifesto<\/a>, for instance (read it, sign it, <em>use<\/em> it!).  \u00a0You could read Julie Dirksen&#8217;s \u00a0<em><a title=\"Amazon link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0321768434\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0321768434&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpwwwotteco-20&amp;linkId=525KW5UBNR42MIWG\" target=\"_blank\">Design for How People Learn<\/a> \u00a0<\/em>as a very good interpretation of the science.  \u00a0The Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center is <a title=\"Science of Learning Center's principles\" href=\"http:\/\/www.learnlab.org\/research\/wiki\/index.php\/Instructional_Principles_and_Hypotheses\" target=\"_blank\">compiling<\/a> research to provide guidance about learning if you want a fuller scientific treatment.  \u00a0Or read Bransford, et al&#8217;s summary of the science of \u00a0<em><a title=\"Free book on how people learn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/openbook.php?isbn=0309070368\" target=\"_blank\">How People Learn<\/a>, \u00a0<\/em>a very rich overview.  \u00a0And Hess &amp; Saxberg&#8217;s recent \u00a0<em><a title=\"Amazon link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1452255490\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1452255490&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpwwwotteco-20&amp;linkId=7K4H5TOCXWWW2WOC\" target=\"_blank\">Breakthrough Leadership in the Digital Age: Using Learning Science to Reboot Schooling<\/a> \u00a0<\/em>is both a call for why and some guidance on how.<\/p>\n<p>Among the things we know are that \u00a0rote and abstract information isn&#8217;t retained, knowledge test doesn&#8217;t mean ability to <em>do<\/em>, getting it right once doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s known, the list goes on.  \u00a0Yet, somehow, we see elearning tools like &#8216;click to learn more&#8217; (er, <a title=\"previous reflections\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=3942\" target=\"_blank\">less<\/a>), tarted up quiz show templates to drill knowledge, easy ways to take content and add quizzes to them, and more.  \u00a0We see elearning that&#8217;s arbitrary info dump and simplistic knowledge test.  \u00a0Which will have a negligible impact on anything meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re focused on speed and cost efficiencies, not on learning outcomes, and that&#8217;s not professional.  \u00a0Look, if you&#8217;re going to do design, do it right.  \u00a0 \u00a0Anything less is really \u00a0<a title=\"previous reflections\"
