{"id":2912,"date":"2012-10-02T06:02:58","date_gmt":"2012-10-02T13:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=2912"},"modified":"2012-09-30T11:15:41","modified_gmt":"2012-09-30T18:15:41","slug":"the-third-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/2012\/10\/the-third-goal\/","title":{"rendered":"The third goal of learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve regularly told workshop and talk attendees that our learning goals are twofold.  \u00a0It may be time to amend that.<\/p>\n<p>Formally, our goals for learning interventions should be \u00a0<em>retention<\/em> over time until needed and \u00a0<em>transfer<\/em> to all appropriate situations (and no inappropriate ones). And these are important goals.  \u00a0If the learning&#8217;s atrophied by the time it&#8217;s needed, it&#8217;s of no use.  \u00a0If we don&#8217;t activate the learning in all relevant situations, we&#8217;re missing opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>But it occurred to me there may be more.  \u00a0I was working with a group developing a certification in a particular area, based upon their wildly successful workshops.  \u00a0One of the outcomes they talked about, in an endeavor that occurs with a very high amount of stress, was that one of their outcomes was confidence on the part of the attendees.<\/p>\n<p>It struck me that confidence on the part of the learner is very much a desirable, maybe even necessary outcome of any really successful learning.  \u00a0I regularly talk about the importance of the emotional component of successful learning: supporting motivation and reducing anxiety, and working to create a <a title=\"Previous reflections\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=12\" target=\"_blank\">trajectory<\/a> of building confidence. That confidence should be an outcome as well.<\/p>\n<p>Too often we practice until we get it right, instead of until we can&#8217;t get it wrong.  \u00a0Add to that the learner knowing they&#8217;re fully capable of performing right, and we&#8217;re there&#8217;re.  \u00a0We have to continue to address the emotional side of the equation as well as the cognitive.  \u00a0It&#8217;s part of <a title=\"Previous reflections\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.learnlets.com\/?p=2900\" target=\"_blank\">experience design<\/a>.
