That&rsquo;s all fixed now! so fresh Weeklypedia will be in your inbox <b>tomorrow<\/b>.<\/p><p>In the meantime, we figured it&rsquo;s worth mentioning that we missed this change due to the launch of another project: <a href=\"https:\/\/finfam.app\/\"><b>FinFam<\/b> - The Collaborative Financial Planning Platform<\/a>. <\/p><p>While not an official Hatnote project it&rsquo;s very much wiki-adjacent. Imagine a wiki of interactive, explorable explanations, defined in spreadsheets, which are also open-source. We call them Views. But now I get no sound.  There is a control on the upper-right of the page that looks like a volume slider \u2013 but moving it around has no effect.  My speakers are working fine, and I haven\u2019t changed anything on my computer (that I know of) since I did get sound that first time.  I have done a Windows update, but IIRC the sound stopped working before I did that.  Do I need to configure something?  Thanks.","description":"<p>Hey listener! Sorry to hear about the trouble, but yes, we can confirm that it\u2019s not just you. Due to <b><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/updates\/2017\/09\/autoplay-policy-changes\">new Chrome policy changes<\/a><\/b>, the browser automutes <a href=\"http:\/\/listen.hatnote.com\">listen.hatnote.com<\/a>. We\u2019re going to need to make some code changes to fix that. We\u2019ll need to start in a muted state and then have users click unmute, at least for Chrome users.<\/p><p>No exact date on when we\u2019ll have that fix out, but Stephen and I should have some spare time in the next few weeks, I\u2019m sure. In the meantime might I recommend <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/new\/\">switching to Firefox<\/a><\/b>. Thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7xyPiYvy0GA\">amazing<\/a> Wikidata evangelists out\nthere, I feel confident that, given at least five minutes, I can\nconvince anyone that Wikidata offers a critical service necessary for\nWikipedia, other wiki projects, and generally the future of knowledge. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User_talk:MahmoudHashemi\">Challengers<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/mhashemi\">welcome<\/a>. :)<br\/><\/p><p>But Wikidata has a problem. Right now it&rsquo;s optimized to ingest and\ngrow. We&rsquo;ve written about <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/161358369742\/wikicite-2017-and-the-7-features-wikidata-needs\">how it&rsquo;s not ideal for maintenance of\nthe datasets<\/a>, but automated ingestion of datasets is what Wikidata\ndoes best.<\/p><p>All this automated growth doesn&rsquo;t necessarily connect well with the\norganic growth of Wikipedia and other projects. And we can see that\nWikidata hasn&rsquo;t truly captured the positive attentions of existing\neditor communities.<\/p><p>For that human touch Wikidata needs ever so much, it must reach out\nto the projects that gave rise to it.<\/p><p>One idea for doing this would be to make human editing of Wikidata\neasier. Make editing Wikidata as easy as adding a citation to\nWikipedia. Literally. <br\/><\/p><p>Highlight a statement, click a button like\n&ldquo;<i>Structure this statement<\/i>&rdquo; and grow Wikidata, all without leaving your\nhome wiki.<\/p><figure data-orig-width=\"645\" data-orig-height=\"291\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/759bf7e8debbb87f82c6db31708d4b6b\/tumblr_inline_oy0dmjyANq1ql4e1e_540.png\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"645\" data-orig-height=\"291\"\/><\/figure><blockquote><p><i>What it might look like to edit Wikidata from Wikipedia.<\/i><br\/><\/p><\/blockquote><p>While Wikitext will always have its place for me, I&rsquo;ve quite warmed up\nto the visual editor, and prefer its interface for adding\ncitations. This project aims to give citations the first-class treatment they deserve. <\/p><p>We saw three important questions emerge at the conference: <\/p><ul><li>What does a good citation database look like? <\/li><li>How can we build this on Wikidata? <\/li><li>How can we integrate this with Wikipedia?<\/li><\/ul><p>These are hard questions. Wikidata now\nboasts some great collections of bibliographic data, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:WikiProject_Medicine\/Zika\">Zika corpus<\/a> and data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/database\/article\/doi\/10.1093\/database\/baw015\/2630183\/Wikidata-as-a-semantic-framework-for-the-Gene-Wiki\">genewiki project<\/a>. Some Wikipedias, like <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mod%C3%A8le:Bibliographie\">French<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Molecular_Structure_of_Nucleic_Acids:_A_Structure_for_Deoxyribose_Nucleic_Acid\">Russian<\/a>, are experimenting with generating citations using Wikidata. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wikimedia.org\/2017\/05\/11\/wikimedia-oclc-partnership\/\">citation databases<\/a> are\n integrated with Visual Editor to make it easy to add rich citations on\nWikipedia&ndash;which can hopefully one day be added to Wikidata for further\nreuse and tracking.<\/p><p>There\n are still a few features that Wikidata needs to be a first-class host\nfor citation data. Even the best structured data takes time to define in\n Wikidata\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Introduction#How_does_Wikidata_work.3F\">precise terms<\/a> of\n items, properties, modifiers, and qualifications. Although it\u2019s\npossible to use some handy tools on Wikidata for bulk actions, it often\nrequires changing your dataset to match the tool\u2019s specific format, or\nwriting bespoke code for your dataset. It\u2019s still challenging to ensure\ndata is high quality, well-sourced, and ready for long-term maintenance.<\/p><figure data-orig-width=\"540\" data-orig-height=\"304\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/19e44a7255b5462d5fefed86d0c46a17\/tumblr_inline_oqwtqabIoh1ql4e1e_540.jpg\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/c6053a55e88cefacc1106c2e5f0c3b8c\/tumblr_inline_oqxkjcTE2B1ql4e1e_540.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"540\" data-orig-height=\"304\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/19e44a7255b5462d5fefed86d0c46a17\/tumblr_inline_oqwtqabIoh1ql4e1e_540.jpg\"\/><\/figure><p>In\n listening to researchers\u2019 talks, discussing with experts in working \ngroups, and workshopping code with some of Wikidata\u2019s soon-to-be biggest\n users, we determined that Wikidata needs seven features for true \nWikicite readiness:<\/p><ol><li><b>Bulk data import.<\/b> There must be an easy process for loading large amounts of data onto Wikidata. There are a few partial tools, like <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/wikidata-todo\/quick_statements.php\">QuickStatements<\/a>,\n which, while itself aptly-named, is just one part of an often-arduous\nworkflow. Other people have written custom bots to import their specific\n dataset, on top of libraries like <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/SuLab\/WikidataIntegrator\">Wikidata Integrator<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Creating_a_bot\">pywikibot<\/a>. Without help from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Data_Import_Hub\">experienced Wikidata contributor<\/a>, there is not an easy self-service way to move data in bulk.<br\/><br\/><\/li><li><b>Sets.<\/b> Wikidata needs a feature to track and curate specific groups of items. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Set_%28mathematics%29&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1496431739550000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEr_4CiZ9Fn2GOnMU2UQxYGuzYUdg\">Sets<\/a> are a necessary concept to answer questions about a complete group. Right now, you can use Wikidata to tell you <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/yckvdhke\">facts about the states in Austria<\/a>, but it cannot tell you the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/States_of_Austria\">complete list of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/States_of_Austria&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1496431739551000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFfWumdvTFdLnCpdwG8PMpTm5k8CQ\">all<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/States_of_Austria&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1496431739552000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGJ9FV843bVfvHgXcn9ekpjJsR8Jg\"> states in Austria<\/a>. Sets are key for curators to perform this sort of cross-sectional data management.<br\/><br\/><\/li><li><b>Data management tools.\n <\/b>Data curators need tools to monitor data of interest. Wikidata is big. \nThe basic tools like watchlists were designed for Wikipedians articles \non a much smaller scale, with a much coarser granularity than the \nWikidata statement or qualifier. An institution that donates data to \nWikidata may want to monitor thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of \nitems and properties. Donors of complete datasets will want to watch \ntheir data for deletions, additions, and edits.<br\/><br\/><\/li><li><b>Grouping edit events.<\/b>\n At the moment, many community members are adding data to Wikidata in \nbulk, but this is a fact that Wikidata\u2019s user interface struggle to \nrepresent. Wikidata currently offers a piecemeal history of user\u2019s \nindividual edits, and encourages editors to add citations and references\n for individual statements. These features are vital, but we need a \nhigher-level grouping feature for higher-level data uploads. For \ninstance, it would be helpful to have an \u201cupload ID\u201d for associated \nedits across many claims. It would also be useful to have a dedicated \nnamespace for human- and machine-readable documentation of the data load\n process, a kind of README that addresses the whole action. This kind of\n documentation not only helps community members get answers to questions\n before, during, and after large-scale activity, but it also helps \nfuture data donors learn about and follow best practices.<br\/><br\/><\/li><li><b>A draft or staging space.<\/b>\n There should be a way for people to add content to Wikidata without\ndirectly modifying \u201clive\u201d data. Currently, when something is added to\nWikidata it is immediately mixed in with everything else. It\u2019s daunting\nfor new users to have to get it right on the first try, let alone take\nquick corrective action in the face of inevitable mistakes. Modeling a\ndataset in Wikidata\u2019s terms requires using Wikidata\u2019s specific\ncollection of items and properties. You may not see how your data fits\ninto Wikidata\u2014perhaps requiring new properties and items\u2014until you begin\n to add it. Experienced Wikidata volunteers may review data to ensure\nit\u2019s high quality, but it would be better to enable this collaborative\nprocess before data is part of the project\u2019s official collection. You\nshould be able to upload your data to a staging space on Wikidata,\nensure it\u2019s high quality and properly structured, and then publish it\nwhen it\u2019s ready. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Primary_sources_too\">PrimarySources tool<\/a> is\n a community-driven start to this, but such a vital feature needs\nsupport from the core. In the longer term, this feature is a small step\ntoward maximizing Wikidata consistency, by setting the stage to\ntransactionally add and modify large-scale data. It would be helpful to have data cleanup tools, similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/openrefine.org\/\">OpenRefine<\/a>, available for data staging.<br\/><br\/><\/li><li><b>Data models.<\/b>\n Wikidata needs new ways to collaborate on new kinds of items.\nSpecifically, we need a better way to reach consensus on models for\ncertain standard types of data. Currently, it&rsquo;s possible describe the\nsame entity in multiple ways, and lacking a forum for this process, it\u2019s\n hard to discuss the differences. See, for instance, the drastically\ndifferent ways that <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/sqid\/%23\/query?run%3DSELECT%2520DISTINCT%2520%253Fentity%2520WHERE%2520%257B%2520%253Fentity%2520wdt:P31%2520wd:Q15079663%2520.%2520%257D%2520LIMIT%252010000\">various subway lines<\/a> are\n described as Wikidata items. Additionally, some models may want to\nimpose certain constraints on instances, or at least indicate if an item\n complies with its model. Looking to the future, tools for collaborative\n data modeling would grow to include a library of data models unlike any\n other.<br\/><br\/><\/li><li><b>Point in time links.<\/b>\n There should be a way to share a dataset from Wikidata at a given point\n in time. Wikidata, like Wikipedia, is continuously changing. Wikipedia\nsupports linking to a specific revision of an article at a point in time\n using a permalink, and you can do the same for a specific Wikidata\nitem. However, Wikidata places special emphasis on relationships between\n items, yet does not extend the permalink feature to these\nrelationships. If you run a query on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:SPARQL_query_service\">Wikidata Query Service<\/a> (the SPARQL endpoint for Wikidata), and then share the query with someone else, they may see different results.<\/li><\/ol><p>These\n seven features came up consistently across several groups and\ndiscussions at Wikicite. As a room full of problem solvers, several good\n projects are already underway to provide community-based solutions in\nthese areas. Among the handful that were started at the conference, we\nare pleased to share we\u2019ve started work on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hatnote\/handcart\">Handcart<\/a>,\n a tool for simplifying medium-sized bulk imports, for citation data,\nand much, much more. We believe trying to fix a problem is the best way\nto learn its details and nuances. <\/p><p>Wikicite\n made a strong case that Wikidata has a lot of valuable potential for \ncitations, and citations are crucial for Wikipedia. Case in point, here at Hatnote,\nthe fleet of special-interest Twitter bots built on\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/124069724187\/wikipedia-and-ifttt-a-technical-guide\">Wikipedia and IFTTT<\/a> just keeps getting longer. If\nyou&rsquo;re running an editathon or are an experienced editor, maybe you\nalready have a topic or <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/124069724187\/wikipedia-and-ifttt-a-technical-guide#edits_with_a_hashtag\">tracked hashtag<\/a> in mind. For the\nrest of us, English Wikipedia alone has millions of articles and\nhundreds of thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:Category\">categories<\/a>. Think about your\naudience, but above all, pick something <em>you&rsquo;re<\/em> interested in. If\nyou&rsquo;d like to pick something out of a hat, try\n<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special:Random\">a random article<\/a> or try watching\n<a href=\"http:\/\/listen.hatnote.com\">Listen to Wikipedia<\/a> and seeing if anything catches your\neye. Finding and picking a name that is\navailable. Twitter has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/twitter-we-are-a-massive-mobile-ad-network-2014-4\">a billion registered users<\/a>. It\nmight take you a minute or two to come up with a username that doesn&rsquo;t\nhave two tweets from 2011.<\/p>\n\n<p>You&rsquo;ll need to create a new Twitter account. Here&rsquo;s a timesaver: Gmail\n(and other email providers) treat emails such as\n<code>janedoe+anything@gmail.com<\/code> the same as <code>janedoe@gmail.com<\/code>. So you can\nskip creating a new email and just use your existing one, such as\n<code>youremail+yournewtwittername@gmail.com<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#step-3\" id=\"step-3\">Step 3<\/a>: Register for IFTTT<\/h2>\n\n<p>Even if you already have an IFTTT account, registering a new one makes\nthe process go smoother and keeps your Recipes more organized in the\nlong run. You wouldn&rsquo;t want your bot&rsquo;s recipes mixed up with your\npersonal ones. You can use the same <a href=\"#step-2\">email trick from Step 2<\/a>\non IFTTT.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#step-4\" id=\"step-4\">Step 4<\/a>: Connect the IFTTT Channels<\/h2>\n\n<p>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\">the Wikipedia IFTTT Channel<\/a> and click\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/reactivate\">Connect Channel<\/a>. You should see a success message in a\nmoment.<\/p>\n\n<p>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/twitter\">the Twitter IFTTT Channel<\/a> and click\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/twitter\/reactivate\">Connect Channel<\/a>. Then, log in as the special-purpose\naccount we just created to authorize IFTTT to post on its behalf. When\nyou see the success message, you&rsquo;re done!<\/p>\n\n<p>There are many other channels worth exploring as outputs for your Wikipedia\ncriteria. More on that later.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#step-5\" id=\"step-5\">Step 5<\/a>: Create the Recipes<\/h2>\n\n<p>Finally we get to the fun part. Choosing and creating the\nrecipes. Here&rsquo;s where you get creative, but there are three Triggers\nworth highlighting:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1023086349-new-edit-with-hashtag\">Hashtag<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/124069724187\/wikipedia-and-ifttt-a-technical-guide#edits_with_a_hashtag\">docs<\/a>) - Fires on edits with <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/112756032432\/the-humble-hashtag-now-on-wikipedia\">a #hashtag in the comment<\/a>. Particularly useful if running an Editathon.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1704714369-article-added-to-category\">Added to category<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/124069724187\/wikipedia-and-ifttt-a-technical-guide#article_added_to_a_category\">docs<\/a>) - Triggers when an editor adds an article to a Category.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1444240077-new-edit-to-article-in-category\">Modified in category<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/124069724187\/wikipedia-and-ifttt-a-technical-guide#edits_to_articles_in_a_category\">docs<\/a>) - Fires whenever an article in a Category is edited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Depending on how articles have been categorized, to really cover a\nsubject you may have to create more than one Recipe. Still, this is\nWikipedia. If you see something that can be improved, don&rsquo;t hesitate\nto try out creating or adding to a Category!<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>And that&rsquo;s it!<\/strong> Your bot is operational. No backend work necessary,\njust some old-fashioned research on a new-fashioned encyclopedia. This post is your 10-minute usage and technical guide to all things Wikipedia+IFTTT. With the new Wikipedia channel, so you can create customized combinations, called <em>Recipes<\/em>, to plug Wikipedia into your Internet ecosystem. With this new channel, Wikipedia offers eight new Triggers that can be connected to IFTTT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/\">200+ other channels<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/email\">email<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/phone_call\">phone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/android_device\">Android<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/ios_notifications\">iOS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/twitter\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/tumblr\">Tumblr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/slack\">Slack<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/\">many more<\/a>. There are already <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/p\/wikipedia\/shared\">dozens of example Wikipedia Recipes<\/a> ready for activation.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re already familiar with IFTTT, a few things set Wikipedia apart from other channels. Foremost, whereas most other services provide an API to data and information, Wikipedia <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DIKW_Pyramid\">provides a direct interface to curated knowledge<\/a>. So trust us when we say it pays to invest in learning the special nature of Wikipedia, as seen through the lens of the new IFTTT Triggers.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#daily_triggers\" name=\"daily_triggers\" id=\"daily_triggers\">The Daily Triggers<\/a><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1401736982-article-of-the-day\">Article of the Day<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1449808817-picture-of-the-day\">Picture of the Day<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/698971924-word-of-the-day\">Word of the Day<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The simplest of the new Triggers, these three update once per day around midnight <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coordinated_Universal_Time\">UTC<\/a>. Their simplicity makes them the perfect candidates to introduce <em>Wikipedia Fact #1<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>Fact #1: There are many Wikipedias!<\/strong> Most people are familiar with Wikipedia as one site. But unlike other IFTTT channel providers, the fact is there is<a href=\"https:\/\/meta.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Wikipedias\"> one Wikipedia per language<\/a>, each with its own conventions and quirks. We\u2019ve made all the new Triggers customizable for all Wikipedia\u2019s 290 languages. So keep in mind for future triggers, a recipe that works well on one language, may not apply at all to the others. As a multilingual Wikipedia editor, I\u2019ve found clicking<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:Interlanguage_links\"> the interlanguage links<\/a> on individual articles and referring to<a href=\"http:\/\/weekly.hatnote.com\/\"> the Weeklypedia archives<\/a> are good ways to get acquainted with the differences.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The Daily Triggers are are an exception to the interlanguage differences. Almost all Wikipedias, regardless of size and age, follow the convention of featured articles. So feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306821-weekly-digest-of-wikipedia-articles\">get a weekly dose of free knowledge in your language of choice<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#edits_to_an_article\" name=\"edits_to_an_article\" id=\"edits_to_an_article\">Edits to an Article<\/a><\/h2>\n\n<p>When most people talk about Wikipedia, they\u2019re talking about the articles, Wikipedia\u2019s fundamental unit of knowledge organization. Articles are written by many users contributing what knowledge they can, edit by edit.<\/p>\n\n<p>On the surface, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/926351857-new-edit-to-specific-article\">the Edits to an Article Trigger<\/a><\/strong> is simple. If you have a favorite article, IFTTT will monitor it for changes and notify you when an edit occurs. But of course there are caveats.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>Fact #2: Wikipedia is a uniquely open platform.<\/strong> That openness is reflected in the data passing through IFTTT APIs. Don\u2019t be surprised to see raw or non-constructive changes made (and usually reverted) by Wikipedia editors, often in quick succession.<\/p>\n  \n  <p><strong>Fact #3: Wikipedia is a community with many subcommunities.<\/strong> Quality, approaches, and discipline will vary between these subcommunities. For instance, to match naming conventions, it\u2019s common for articles to be renamed (&ldquo;moved&rdquo;) multiple times, especially when they\u2019re brand new.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>If you\u2019re learning new things from the facts and think you might have some better solutions, Wikipedia <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28idea_lab%29\">wants to hear about them<\/a>. In the meantime, you can have IFTTT <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306844-get-twitter-updates-on-a-wikipedia-article\">DM you on Twitter<\/a> when there are updates to the discussion or new terms that might help in the debate.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#edits_from_a_user\" name=\"edits_from_a_user\" id=\"edits_from_a_user\">Edits from a User<\/a><\/h2>\n\n<p>Editors write articles. You don\u2019t need to be logged in to edit Wikipedia, but it helps with site customizations and better edit history maintenance. Now, using <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/447356988-new-edit-from-specific-user\">the Edits from a User Trigger<\/a><\/strong> you can easily connect a given user\u2019s edit activity with other social sites, making Wikipedia more personal than ever.<\/p>\n\n<p>Other than<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Slaporte\"> Stephen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:MahmoudHashemi\">me<\/a>, finding interesting users to follow is a topic for another post. But there is one type of user that has garnered a lot of attention in the past: the Bots. Wikipedia\u2019s Bots are more administrative power tool than autonomous overlord, but people <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-18892510\">are<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/news.discovery.com\/tech\/robotics\/wikipedia-bot-writes-10000-articles-a-day-140715.htm\">still<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/view\/524751\/the-shadowy-world-of-wikipedias-editing-bots\/\">obsessed<\/a>. Just as well, because this brings us to the next fact.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>Fact #4: Wikipedia grows at different speeds.<\/strong> Some pages change quickly, some slowly. Generally the larger the item, the faster it changes, unless it\u2019s brand new. This is even visible at the site level: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">English<\/a> Wikipedia sees about <a href=\"http:\/\/weekly.hatnote.com\/archive\/en\/20150710\/weeklypedia_20150710.html\">100,000 changes per day<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Accueil_principal\">French<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/weekly.hatnote.com\/archive\/fr\/20150710\/weeklypedia_20150710.html\">20,000<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fa.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D8%B5%D9%81%D8%AD%D9%87%D9%94_%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%84%DB%8C\">Farsi<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/weekly.hatnote.com\/archive\/fa\/20150710\/weeklypedia_20150710.html\">200<\/a>. If your Trigger event is too high-velocity, occurring more than 50 times per hour, it is likely not a good fit for IFTTT, and you could get temporarily blocked by a Recipe\u2019s Action\u2019s service. If it\u2019s too low-velocity, you might be disappointed with an otherwise sound recipe.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Some bots, like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:ClueBot_NG\">ClueBot<\/a>, are very active, and would not play well with IFTTT. Other bots edit only a couple times a day, like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special:Contributions\/SpaceFactsBot\">SpaceFactsBot<\/a>. It updates space-related world records in progress, and would be a fine IFTTT Trigger candidate. Tweet its edits (or your own), by filling in <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306831-tweet-your-wikipedia-edits\">this recipe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#edits_with_a_hashtag\" name=\"edits_with_a_hashtag\" id=\"edits_with_a_hashtag\">Edits with a Hashtag<\/a><\/h2>\n\n<p>Hatnote is a big fan of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hatnote.com\/post\/112756032432\/the-humble-hashtag-now-on-wikipedia\">hashtagging on Wikipedia<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hashtag\">Hashtags<\/a> are the best way to unify edits with a common purpose across articles and editors. If you\u2019re editing with friends, colleagues, or Editathon participants, easy-to-use hashtags build momentum and record your hard work.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>Fact #5: Set up earlier rather than later.<\/strong> This is hardly specific to Wikipedia, but whenever possible, setting up a recipe beforehand is way easier than retrieving the data later. Don\u2019t forget to test them out to make sure they work! That&rsquo;s what the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Sandbox\">Sandbox<\/a> is for.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>With a little bit of forethought and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1023086349-new-edit-with-hashtag\">the Edits with a Hashtag Trigger<\/a><\/strong>, you can automatically build that record <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306835-publish-edits-from-your-wikipedia-editathon-on-tumblr\">into a blog<\/a> or other manifest. You can even <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306842-save-edits-from-your-wikipedia-editathon-in-google-drive\">push it to a Google Spreadsheet<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/codepen.io\/nickmoreton\/blog\/using-ifttt-and-google-drive-to-create-a-json-api\">access that as a form of JSON API<\/a>, giving you a whole API backend in no time.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#article_added_to_a_category\" name=\"article_added_to_a_category\" id=\"article_added_to_a_category\">Article added to a Category<\/a><\/h2>\n\n<p>We\u2019ve saved the best for last, because now we\u2019re getting into the most complex and exciting Triggers in this release. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1704714369-article-added-to-category\">The Article added to Category Trigger<\/a><\/strong> is one of our favorites because it is so open-ended. You can get really creative with them. Just look at these Recipes:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306824-call-me-if-there-is-a-new-president-of-the-united-states\">Call me if there is a new President of the United States<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/307413-if-a-wikipedia-user-announces-they-have-earned-a-phd-then-send-me-an-email\">Send me an email when a Wikipedia user earns a PhD<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306826-updates-from-the-ufo-sighting-category-on-wikipedia\">If The Truth Is Out There, I Want To Believe<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In case you hadn\u2019t interacted with them before, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:Category\">Categories<\/a> can be found by scrolling to the bottom of any Wikipedia article. An article\u2019s associated Talk page often references administrative categories, which are interesting in their own right. In fact, due to technical limitations for this recipe and the next, Talk page changes are automatically resolve to their &ldquo;main&rdquo; namespace counterparts. Talk goes to the Article namespace, User talk to User, Project talk to Project, etc. It is not possible to monitor a Talk page exclusively.<\/p>\n\n<p>Categories are full of promise, and we eagerly anticipate the community\u2019s leveraging of this Trigger, but that promise comes with a price.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>Fact #6: Wikipedia Categories can be problematic.<\/strong> First, the caveats of the previous facts apply doubly to Categories. Category systems and conventions vary greatly between communities and languages. Some Categories are huge and change frequently, others are small or even empty, despite having broad-sounding names. Research is necessary.<\/p>\n  \n  <p>Second, Categories often assume an unpredictable tree structure, wherein parent categories do not automatically contain their subcategories\u2019 members. Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:Categories\">cycles can exist<\/a>. Finally, due to the way pages are added and removed to Categories, it is possible for a page to appear to be added to a Category multiple times, simply due to editing snafus. Do not actually rely on the Presidential phone call for your think tank\u2019s next strategy summit.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Most of these complexities are manageable through other means. For instance, if one wanted to monitor a Category&rsquo;s Subcategories, one would simply have to do a bit more mousework, and set up multiple Recipes to perform the same Action, as we&rsquo;ve done in the examples for this next Trigger.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#edits_to_articles_in_a_category\" name=\"edits_to_articles_in_a_category\" id=\"edits_to_articles_in_a_category\">Edits to Articles in a Category<\/a><\/h2>\n\n<p>Some would argue the most complex Trigger, but for those who have been following along so far, you can probably guess exactly what this will and won\u2019t do. Use the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/channels\/wikipedia\/triggers\/1444240077-new-edit-to-article-in-category\">Edits to Articles in a Category Trigger<\/a><\/strong> to simultaneously monitor multiple articles related to a specific topic.<\/p>\n\n<p>From Fact #4, we know that if the topic is too broad, the edit speed may outpace IFTTT\u2019s effectiveness. From Fact #2 and #3 we know that Categories mean different things to different communities. From Fact #6 we know that a given Category may not always be what it appears. And finally, from Fact #1 we know that Categories don\u2019t apply across languages, so we recommend disabling the language customization field for published Category-based recipes.<\/p>\n\n<p>Add in the Talk-page caveat from the previous Trigger and it\u2019s been a long road, but we\u2019re already reaping the returns. For instance, using the <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/recipes\/306840-tweet-about-wikipedia-updates-in-a-category\">Tweet about Wikipedia Updates in a Category Recipe<\/a>, there are already three special-interest Twitter accounts running solely off Wikipedia with no specific programming overhead whatsoever:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LISEdits\">@LISedits<\/a>: Tweets about Library Sciences. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gZKkIsWJOt8\">We\u2019ve heard librarians love Wikipedia.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/medstubs\">@medstubs<\/a>: Tweets about newly posted medical articles that could use contributions<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/wikibreakfast\">@wikibreakfast<\/a>: Tweets about the most important meal of the day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>When it\u2019s this easy, one might wonder where all the complexity went. Well, if you\u2019re really curious about the technical details, read on.<\/p>\n\n<h2><a href=\"#behind_the_scenes\" name=\"behind_the_scenes\" id=\"behind_the_scenes\">Behind the Scenes<\/a><\/h2>\n\n<p>Hard at work at Hatnote HQ:<\/p>\n\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/76c649b5c03b14a7807f93d781edbeca\/tumblr_nrhepu5je41r07l56o1_1280.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen at Sugarlump with Snacks\"\/><\/p>\n\n<p>The Article Edit Trigger, User Edit Trigger, and Daily Triggers are based on basic queries to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/api.php\">Wikipedia API<\/a>. The Wikipedia channel includes a daily update on the Wikipedia Article of the Day, Wikimedia Commons Photo of the Day, and the Wiktionary Word of the Day. All three of these feeds are also available as RSS feeds from the API.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Hashtag Trigger and Category Triggers are all based on SQL queries to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikitech.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Help:Tool_Labs\/Database\">Wikipedia database replicas<\/a> that are openly available on <a href=\"https:\/\/wikitech.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Nova_Resource:Tools\">Tool Labs<\/a>. The service that does all the API calls, SQL queries, and serves all the IFTTT requests is <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/slaporte\/ifttt\">written in Python<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The very astute might notice that all the Wikipedia IFTTT features are Triggers for reading as opposed to Actions for editing.
