The Handbook on International Migration presents the current state of studies on migration in the broad sense, which includes migrant settlement policies and practices aimed at regulating migration activities. The review of the book shows that it fails to address the subject of migrants who have temporarily or permanently resided in one nation but, in the event of a crisis, seek to relocate to a third country for a certain period; in such circumstances, how does the third country react to such migrants? Secondly, the book analyses the historical analysis of past migration trends and reasons, but does this affect future migration scenarios? If so, how should governments and relevant policymakers react to the development of their laws and policies? In a period of widespread corruption, coupled with economic downturn, disconcerting issues relate... more In a period of widespread corruption, coupled with economic downturn, disconcerting issues related to autonomy and separate states, the management of grassroots level affairs by local communities in the wake of political consciousness and local aspirations and the issues of Centre-state relations are back on the political agenda. A legitimate question that arises in this context is: do we need to rethink federalism in India? This paper attempts to highlight the present challenges to the centre-state relations and explores the directions in which the national and state governments should move if the country is to achieve its goals of a strong, stable, economically vibrant nation.

There is a conspicuous lack of research on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices undert... more There is a conspicuous lack of research on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices undertaken in the United Arab Emirates, more so in the banking sector. This paper attempts to fill the gap by examining the government policies drawn up to support enterprises in their CSR efforts. The paper aims to examine the nature and practices of CSR undertaken by the banking sectors in the UAE. UAE's desire to go beyond being a tourist destination to an international business hub and financial market has resulted in their desire to set up CSR activities. In the UAE the banking sectors are the first to have adopted social responsibility and worked to advance it. Banks like Mashreq, ADCB, and Emirates NBD have actively involved themselves in CSR projects. For this study, ten UAE banks (Islamic and Non-Islamic banks) have been chosen based on purposive sampling to ensure the selected banks are currently or in the recent past involved themselves in CSR projects.

Policy responses to the pandemic have varied considerably, both in nature and in success. This paper highlights the policy capacities of the UAE in different areas that have contributed to managing the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, the paper examines the functional capacity, analytical capacity, fiscal capacity, well-timed information-sharing capacity and political capacity of the UAE in addressing the pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThe study on which this paper was based adopted a mixed-method approach to analyze policy capacities. International labor migration is the unique reality of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) mem... more International labor migration is the unique reality of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states. Despite seemingly open migration policies and reforms, the GCC states recently engaged in international and domestic policies to manage the migrant population better. Considering the dependency of Gulf states on migrant labor and the constant increase in migration to these states, this article aims to understand the policies pertaining to the presence, conditions of residence, integration, and socioeconomic rights of the migrant labor force. After an overview of migration trends and patterns in the GCC states, the article examines the migration policy framework that regulates and governs migration in the GCC. It also highlights the recent reforms and initiatives taken by the GCC states and a few sending countries which have impacted the migration flows, migrant rights, and development benefits of migration. Federalism is one of the most important and effective political institutions in India. However, t... more Federalism is one of the most important and effective political institutions in India. However, the late 1990s witnessed a weakening of national political parties, the emergence of coalition politics and a shift in the center-state power balance. Politically, however, with the rise of regional parties and coalitions, states seem to have gained an upper hand in many spheres of governance, whereas the center finds itself restricted when there are serious problems regarding law and order issues, foreign policy matters or fiscal decentralization. Hence, provisions and articles narrated in the Constitution of India demand revisit as India needs a fresh balance of power looking to the new 'low' in center-state relations. The volume critically brings to the fore the fact that the championing of federalism by the regional parties at the state level works against decentralization further down in reality. Chapters in this volume address a wide range of complex issues affecting the center-state relations in the context of political, social and economic developments.
