Women suffered the most during the past thirty years of civil conflicts in Afghanistan. Since long ago, and throughout the history of Afghanistan, women have been subjugated and discriminated within a patriarchal and male dominated state – whether they have been discriminated against by religious groups, conservatives and male members of their families, or their rights have been violated by the politico-legal machinery put in place by the state. Afghanistan is the only country in the world that has been invaded by three leading empires.
