A portable system using a direct contact for the measurement of ultrasonic velocity and broadband... more A portable system using a direct contact for the measurement of ultrasonic velocity and broadband attenuation in bone is described (contact ultrasonic bone analyser, CUBA). Soft-tissue compensation is performed using an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. CUBA has been successfully validated using reference materials, the precision of velocity and broadband attenuation measurements being typically 0.2% and 0.5% respectively. The clinical reproducibility has been assessed on the equine third metacarpal bone. The reproducibility of velocity measurement is typically 0.5% for cortical bone and 1% for cancellous bone. For broadband attenuation the reproducibility is typically 7% for cortical bone and 6% for cancellous bone. The lower reproducibility of the attenuation data is attributed to the high sensitivity to variations in the material properties of bone with small changes in transducer positioning. Coupling difficulties through an intact equine coat have been overcome and the system may now be assessed in the clinical environment, in both human and animal populations.
This paper underscores the usefulness of investigating minor characters within established comic ... more This paper underscores the usefulness of investigating minor characters within established comic environments that help disrupt both the fixity of their identity and their imagined environments, allowing us to observe how order is re-established into their universe(s). My journey began after reading of a new Turkish superhero Janissary, in her only starring role, working alongside the Justice League of America in the DC Comic’s JLA Annual 2000 #4. As one of eight Planet DC annuals published in 2000, which introduced new international superheroes working alongside established stars, they exposed some of the dynamics of assimilating into an existing and stable universe. By conducting a content analysis on all eight Planet DC comics, with an analysis of language use in JLA #4, accentuated the subtle aesthetic techniques used to achieve a sense of continuity and authenticity for our new heroes. What also emerged was the importance of retroactive continuity (retcon) and serialisation on the construction of authentic national subjects. Equally important was the care taken by Brian K Vaughan in incorporating authentic and accurate Turkish and Islamic mythology, which are skilfully retconned into JLA #4. There is a strong case to extend this type of study into other minor characters to observe the workings of socio-political dynamics in, what is seen as, an unthreatening popular medium.

His work is often unsettling and disturbing, and to some his work is sick or hateful, yet there is a pragmatic and a very utilitarian view of life and death, displayed in this loyal “Darwinian”. Nonetheless, Greenaway acknowledges that Genesis and the theory of evolution both provide “creation myths” in their own way.

This essay explores these liminal spaces (Viljoen and Van Der Merwe 2007) which delineate our obsession with the binaries of ‘them’ and ‘us’, ‘civilized’ and ‘savage’, and, ‘primitive’ and ‘modern’. Yet, there is an added tension within the title where the triptych creates its own dynamic between the label of ‘orient’ and either the ‘primitive’ or ‘modern’ . So how have these labels evolved to carry all their associated characteristics ?

Firstly, I will discuss the theoretical narratives of heteronormativity in order to establish a consistent framework and language to describe the experiences of Turkish individuals. Secondly, I situate these heteronormative discourses within modern Turkish history. Finally, using several examples of events and statistics from Turkey, I will explore the ways in which politics, legislation and social institutions have altered in the last decade.

My gut instinct is that science ought to consider all factors that may impact their results, including those that highlight differences between groups of people. Yet, I have a strong view that the very concept of race itself is flawed and unhelpful in a scientific context. So, is Marek Kohn correct to state, “…the time has come to explore how biological variation and social constructions are related… denial no longer appears to be an option” (Kohn, 1995: 285)? If so, what are the issues that academia must be mindful of when conducting such research?
