I know this might be a flash-in-the-pan kind of event, but the RIFT fresh reroll a week ago was an unexpected and amazingly enjoyable MMO encore. New and returning players flocked to RIFT, filling up page after page in the Fresh Riftwalkers guild. Sometimes all we need is that knowledge that a whole bunch of people are going to show up at the same time to do the same thing to make an MMO good once more.
It’s that “critical mass” effect. Have too few people participate in something, and the people who do show up don’t stick around long because it feels abandoned and lifeless. But if you can get the ball rolling, it can be something indeed. The trick? To KEEP that ball rolling and keep that critical mass healthy and active. That’s going to be the big question of this effort, because it is grassroots and being organized on the fly. Early enthusiasm is all well and good, but people who put down roots in a game and stick it out for a long time is what this project actually needs.
Once again, I went with a Bard primary (Ranger secondary for pet) because I love the look and feel of the bardic combat in this game. Plus, it’s group friendly with lots of heals and buffs, and you can’t beat that!
A good chunk of the participants are doing something called “Era” progression, which means keeping their level capped to 50 until mid-January so everyone can run dungeons on-level with each other and the progress into the expansions together. I’m not restricting myself to this, mostly because I’ll probably be behind most of the time anyway. I’m just here for the chat, the companionship, and to journey back through this MMO once more.
It was absolutely a great return to RIFT — and unfortunately one that I felt I had to cut short. The pressing issue is time. I barely have time to play three games a week — two MMOs (WoW and LOTRO) and one CRPG (Pillars). When I tried to toss RIFT on top of that, I could feel the tower start to collapse. Sure, there are ways to juggle four games, but MMOs are time-hungry beasts, and as much as I love RIFT, I did not want to commit to be sinking a huge chunk of time into it. That may change in the future, and I’ll be keeping my eye on this project, but sadly I think I have to step away for the time being.
