Int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par les arts et l&#8217;histoire naturelle, il a rapidement engag\u00e9, au cours de la premi\u00e8re affectation mentionn\u00e9e, un travail de collecte d&#8217;objets vari\u00e9s qui, depuis, sont conserv\u00e9s dans des institutions en France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans son m\u00e9moire de l&#8217;\u00c9cole du Louvre<sup><a href=\"#footnote_2_798\" id=\"identifier_2_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Anne-Laure Nyari, La Collection Th&eacute;odore Ballieu conserv&eacute;e au mus&eacute;e du quai Branly, m&eacute;moire de Master 1, Paris&nbsp;: &Eacute;cole du Louvre, 2009 [en ligne].\">2<\/a><\/sup>, Anne-Laure Nyari a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 les objets du Mus\u00e9e du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac (MqB) donn\u00e9s par Ballieu et s&#8217;est int\u00e9ress\u00e9e plus largement aux collectes que le consul avait pu mener&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait \u00e0 Hawaii en tant que consul et commissaire de France, il se proposa de devenir correspondant du Mus\u00e9um. \u00c0 ce titre, il effectua de nombreux envois qui se mont\u00e8rent \u00e0 plus de mille num\u00e9ros d\u2019inventaire r\u00e9f\u00e9ren\u00e7ant aussi bien des objets d\u2019histoire naturelle, des ossements humains, que des artefacts et des photographies<sup><a href=\"#footnote_3_798\" id=\"identifier_3_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ibid., p.&nbsp;4.\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Th\u00e9odore Ballieu a d\u00e9but\u00e9 ses envois d&#8217;objets par un don au Mus\u00e9um national d&#8217;histoire naturelle de Paris en 1872, puis il est officiellement devenu un correspondant de cet \u00e9tablissement en 1875, ce qui lui a donn\u00e9 toute l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9 et soutien financier pour poursuivre ses collectes \u00e0 Hawa\u00ef et ses envois vers la France<sup><a href=\"#footnote_4_798\" id=\"identifier_4_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ibid., p.&nbsp;8-10.\">4<\/a><\/sup>. Il a rapidement recrut\u00e9 un Hawa\u00efen pour l&#8217;aider dans cette t\u00e2che<sup><a href=\"#footnote_5_798\" id=\"identifier_5_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ibid., p.&nbsp;15.\">5<\/a><\/sup>. Il s&#8217;est employ\u00e9 \u00e0 collecter les objets lui-m\u00eame ou \u00e0 payer d&#8217;autres personnes pour les lui ramener<sup><a href=\"#footnote_6_798\" id=\"identifier_6_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ibid., p.&nbsp;16.\">6<\/a><\/sup>, et il a sollicit\u00e9 la population autochtone pour les documenter (termes linguistiques, usages, etc.). La position de consul occup\u00e9e par Ballieu l&#8217;a aussi aid\u00e9 \u00e0 acc\u00e9der \u00e0 certains items, en particulier aux objets culturels et cultuels importants ainsi qu&#8217;\u00e0 des restes humains<sup><a href=\"#footnote_7_798\" id=\"identifier_7_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ibid., p.&nbsp;16-17.\">7<\/a><\/sup>. Cette institution a surtout conserv\u00e9 les sp\u00e9cimens d&#8217;esp\u00e8ces animales, v\u00e9g\u00e9tales et min\u00e9rales&nbsp;; elle a pu d\u00e9poser des objets ethnographiques aupr\u00e8s d&#8217;autres \u00e9tablissements comme le Mus\u00e9e naval du Louvre et le Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;ethnographie du Trocad\u00e9ro (d\u00e9sormais dans les collections du MqB)<sup><a href=\"#footnote_9_798\" id=\"identifier_9_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Nyari, op. cit., p.&nbsp;38.\">9<\/a><\/sup>. L&#8217;int\u00e9r\u00eat de cet ensemble \u00e9tait per\u00e7u tant par les contemporains fran\u00e7ais&nbsp;&#8211; Ballieu a \u00e9t\u00e9 distingu\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa collaboration avec le Mus\u00e9um&nbsp;&#8211; que hawa\u00efens qui se d\u00e9solaient parfois de voir partir des pi\u00e8ces vers l&#8217;\u00e9tranger<sup><a href=\"#footnote_10_798\" id=\"identifier_10_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Par exemple au sujet de la sculpture du dieu Lono&nbsp;: &laquo;&nbsp;We congratulate Mr.&nbsp;Ballieu on his good luck in securing this antiquity, which he sends to one of the museums of Paris&nbsp;; but at the same time we must express our regret that it could not have been placed in our own national museum&nbsp;&raquo;, Hawaiian Gazette, 25 avril 1877, p.&nbsp;3 [en ligne].\">10<\/a><\/sup>. Affect\u00e9 \u00e0 Sydney en 1878, le consul ne semble pas avoir r\u00e9alis\u00e9 une collecte \u00e9quivalente pendant ce nouveau poste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ce qui \u00e9tait moins connu, c&#8217;est que Th\u00e9odore Ballieu a aussi fait un don de livres imprim\u00e9s \u00e0 la Biblioth\u00e8que nationale, enregistr\u00e9 en f\u00e9vrier 1879<sup><a href=\"#footnote_11_798\" id=\"identifier_11_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Biblioth&egrave;que nationale de France, Registre des dons, 21768-30862, 1878-1881, cote IMPR DON 07.\">11<\/a><\/sup>, ind\u00e9pendamment de ceux d&#8217;objets. Le registre des dons de l&#8217;\u00e9poque indique \u00e0 l&#8217;entr\u00e9e n<sup>o<\/sup>&nbsp;24067&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;de la part de M. Balleu [sic] consul de France \u00e0 Honolulu, 67 volumes en langue oc\u00e9anienne imprim\u00e9s \u00e0 Honolulu&nbsp;\u00bb. Cette indication est malheureusement tr\u00e8s superficielle et ne comporte aucun d\u00e9tail des livres donn\u00e9s. Il a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaire de croiser les donn\u00e9es du <a href=\"https:\/\/catalogue.bnf.fr\/index.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">catalogue g\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/a>, du <a href=\"https:\/\/archivesetmanuscrits.bnf.fr\/ark:\/12148\/cc1260155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carnet g\u00e9n\u00e9ral des entr\u00e9es<\/a> et de v\u00e9rifier les documents un par un. Le faible nombre de livres du XIX<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle en langues oc\u00e9aniennes dans les collections de la BnF a rapidement permis de rep\u00e9rer des ouvrages correspondants<sup><a href=\"#footnote_12_798\" id=\"identifier_12_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Notamment gr&acirc;ce &agrave; l&#039;inventaire du lettrage P2, consacr&eacute; &agrave; l&#039;Oc&eacute;anie, dans le carnet correspondant.\">12<\/a><\/sup>, puis de d\u00e9rouler le fil du corpus pour en dresser la liste (disponible en fin d&#8217;article). Ils comportent presque tous l&#8217;estampille du num\u00e9ro de don accompagn\u00e9 d&#8217;un num\u00e9ro not\u00e9 au crayon papier qui pourrait correspondre \u00e0 la num\u00e9rotation des volumes \u00e0 leur arriv\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les documents identifi\u00e9s offrent un ensemble bien plus diversifi\u00e9 que la mention \u00ab&nbsp;volumes en langue oc\u00e9anienne imprim\u00e9s \u00e0 Honolulu&nbsp;\u00bb ne le sugg\u00e9rait&nbsp;: il n&#8217;y a pas que des pi\u00e8ces imprim\u00e9es \u00e0 Hawa\u00ef, ni qu&#8217;une seule langue repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e. Ce sont essentiellement des livres religieux et d&#8217;enseignement, sortis de presses et d&#8217;\u00e9diteurs sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s sur le sujet. Ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 imprim\u00e9s dans l&#8217;archipel hawa\u00efen, \u00e0 New York (si\u00e8ge de l&#8217;<em>American Tract Society<\/em>) et dans l&#8217;archipel d&#8217;Ebon (\u00eeles Marshall). Ils couvrent une p\u00e9riode allant de 1834 \u00e0 1876. Les langues de publication sont l&#8217;hawa\u00efen, le marquisien, le gilbertin, le pohnpei, le marshallais et le kosrae. Th\u00e9odore Ballieu a ainsi effectu\u00e9 une collecte large qui ne s&#8217;est pas limit\u00e9e aux publications hawa\u00efennes contemporaines de son s\u00e9jour \u00e0 Honolulu. Les m\u00e9thodes d&#8217;acquisition de ces ouvrages ne sont pas encore connues&nbsp;; le recours aux archives pourra les \u00e9clairer. Ballieu a certainement pu profiter des r\u00e9seaux de diffusion hawa\u00efens pour acqu\u00e9rir des livres, tel le magasin de l&#8217;imprimeur-libraire Henry M. Whitney. Il a aussi pu en acheter lors de ses s\u00e9jours sur la c\u00f4te ouest am\u00e9ricaine o\u00f9 il s&#8217;approvisionnait en mat\u00e9riels pour le conditionnement des sp\u00e9cimens naturels collect\u00e9s<sup><a href=\"#footnote_13_798\" id=\"identifier_13_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Nyari, op. cit., p.&nbsp;14.\">13<\/a><\/sup> ou bien profiter des navires s&#8217;arr\u00eatant dans les ports hawa\u00efens. Anne-Laure Nyari \u00e9voque \u00e0 ce sujet le \u00ab&nbsp;passage annuel d\u2019un navire am\u00e9ricain transportant les missionnaires \u00e0 travers le Pacifique&nbsp;\u00bb<sup><a href=\"#footnote_14_798\" id=\"identifier_14_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ibid., p.&nbsp;26.\">14<\/a><\/sup> qui a permis \u00e0 Ballieu d&#8217;obtenir des objets venant d&#8217;autres archipels, comme Gilbert ou Pohnpei&nbsp;; nous retrouvons des imprim\u00e9s missionnaires dans les langues de ces \u00eeles parmi ceux donn\u00e9s \u00e0 la Biblioth\u00e8que nationale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ce type de don est int\u00e9ressant \u00e0 double titre. Pour l&#8217;\u00e9tablissement de r\u00e9ception, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 une entr\u00e9e de volum\u00e9trie importante (plusieurs dizaines de documents) sur une aire g\u00e9ographique peu repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e dans ses collections. Le don Ballieu \u00e9quivaut encore maintenant \u00e0 environ un quart des imprim\u00e9s en langues oc\u00e9aniennes du XIX<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle conserv\u00e9s \u00e0 la BnF. Bien que certainement pass\u00e9 inaper\u00e7u \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9poque et probablement peu consult\u00e9, il offre aujourd&#8217;hui un \u00e9chantillon vari\u00e9 de publications oc\u00e9aniennes ou \u00e0 destination d&#8217;archipels du Pacifique qui permet de travailler, entre autres, sur les aires d&#8217;influence des imprimeries et les r\u00e9seaux de diffusion de la litt\u00e9rature chr\u00e9tienne. Par exemple, les trois ouvrages en marquisien (n<sup>o<\/sup>&nbsp;29 \u00e0 31 de la liste) sont des textes catholiques imprim\u00e9s \u00e0 Honolulu en 1868-1869. Une telle production \u00e9tait impossible quelques d\u00e9cennies plus t\u00f4t lors des oppositions entre les protestants anglais\/am\u00e9ricains et les catholiques fran\u00e7ais sur l&#8217;archipel hawa\u00efen&nbsp;; ces derniers en ont \u00e9t\u00e9 chass\u00e9s et ont d\u00fb faire imprimer leurs textes dans d&#8217;autres lieux<sup><a href=\"#footnote_15_798\" id=\"identifier_15_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Bernice Judd, Hawaiian language imprints, 1822-1899&nbsp;: a bibliography, Honolulu&nbsp;: Hawaiian Mission children&#039;s society, University press of Hawaii, 1978, p.&nbsp;XV.\">15<\/a><\/sup>. Autre exemple avec trois \u00e9ditions d&#8217;un livre de g\u00e9ographie imprim\u00e9es \u00e0 Honolulu en 1869-1870 et \u00e0 destination de Pohnpei, des Marquises et des Gilbert. Les illustrations utiles \u00e0 l&#8217;apprentissage comme les cartes sont fixes, celles plus d\u00e9coratives (animaux, sc\u00e8nes bibliques) sont mouvantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group collect\u00e9. Les objets amass\u00e9s par Ballieu avaient \u00ab&nbsp;pour but d\u2019informer la France sur ce qu\u2019\u00e9tait Hawaii, dans son environnement aussi bien social et culturel que naturel&nbsp;\u00bb<sup><a href=\"#footnote_16_798\" id=\"identifier_16_798\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Nyari, op. cit., p.&nbsp;30.\">16<\/a><\/sup>. Pour cela, Ballieu s&#8217;est int\u00e9ress\u00e9 \u00e0 de nombreuses th\u00e9matiques.
