This article focuses on methods of communication that workers used to facilitate interaction with... more This article focuses on methods of communication that workers used to facilitate interaction with young people with Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD) aged 13-25 years old. It presents vignettes from observation to illustrate approaches and challenges to facilitating communication. Empirical data collected showed that the use of intensive interaction and provocations facilitated communication despite a lack of formalised communication methods. I conclude that consideration of communication and interaction approaches are essential foundations to successful inclusion of young people with severe learning disabilities.
