Content teaching: innovative and traditional practices

Innovative teaching is sometimes perceived as opposite of traditional teaching, since it is regar... more Innovative teaching is sometimes perceived as opposite of traditional teaching, since it is regarded as student-centred and takes on the form of guided construction. This distinguishing feature led to an expectation that traditional teaching practices will be replaced with innovative ones for the purpose of fostering learning. The goal of the present research is to examine this issue by taking a closer look at teaching practices within an innovative learning environment, and their implications for teachers and teacher educators. Our qualitative research was conducted in a secondary school which has implemented such a learning environment. The data analysis is based on sociolinguistic discourse analysis. The findings reveal a variety of teaching practices, which allows teachers to choose the most suitable one for a particular learning requirement. We conclude in proposing to adopt a more complex approach to teaching, and to relinquish the dichotomy between traditional and innovative teaching practices. Theoretical and practical implications of this proposal are presented in the discussion.

What is the configuration and intensity level of the various factors involved in the implementation of innovative pedagogical practices using ICT in schools? 2. Can a connection be identified between the level of intensity of the different factors affecting the innovation and the level of change in various domains of innovation (e.g., teacher role, student role, curriculum, and time and space configurations)? Method: The approach of building a theory from case study research together with process perspective and an organizational routines model were applied to analyzing seven successful Israeli high schools that bring their students to high academic outcomes. Findings: Five processes were found to operate cyclically during the school year: building a vision-oriented senior leadership team, enhancing students’ choice, developing a student-oriented class schedule, organizing an exam system, and mapping each student. Each process comprises several routines that present structuration by the alignment of their ostensive, performative, and artifact aspects. One issue that appears significant under such conditions is building trust and inscribing it into the structure of IOC. In all the cases, ISSPP protocols were used to collect the data, and the findings were analyzed in accordance with the organizational approach and organizational routine theory.FindingsThe explanatory SSP model comprises three cyclical phases that explain cause–effect relationships and presents intervention points for school improvement toward success. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present the successful school and principal (SSP) model, w... more PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present the successful school and principal (SSP) model, which has developed over 13 years of Israeli involvement in the ISSPP study.Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual paper summarizing the findings of more than 20 case studies of successful, coasting and low-performing schools and their principals, into the SSP model. In all the cases, ISSPP protocols were used to collect the data, and the findings were analyzed in accordance with the organizational approach and organizational routine theory.FindingsThe explanatory SSP model comprises three cyclical phases that explain cause–effect relationships and presents intervention points for school improvement toward success.
