It is assumed that part of today's societal difficulties, uncertainties and crisis worldwide can ... more It is assumed that part of today's societal difficulties, uncertainties and crisis worldwide can be attributed to the competing of multiple identities, to their intersections and their overlapping nature-on the level of nations, on the level of communities and also on the level of the individual. We aim at presenting a typology of identities that come into play in the public and in the private domain of the individual. It is hypothesized that there is a strong interdependence of cultural heritage, human values and social traditions in the competition of identities. These questions, which are interrelated and interconnected with each other through a common denominator, namely "cultural-mental programming" and "reprogramming efforts," are going to be pondered about in the presentation. In the context of globalization the relevance of this topic is reinforced by the need to adapt to changes within the ever-intensifying shift from intercultural to multicultural environment in communities, in business and in work places. Attempts will be made to articulate some projections with respect to future trends that are to be expected: the way to go from competing identities to establishing a competitive identity (Simon Anholt). The contribution does not offer ready solutions but rather serves as fuel for further discussions.

Missions of Higher Education Higher education has a long history worldwide, and goes back to ancient times. The first universities in Europe were centres of learning and knowledge where professors (doctors and magisters) and students convened from nearby places and distant countries to live and study together. It is true that these societies (this is the original meaning of the word universitas) were organised like medieval guilds and needed royal "letter patents" or charters for their establishment, but have always been autonomous organisations, and more or less independent of outer interference in academic matters. And, more importantly, they have always enjoyed universal respect and prestige. The earliest universities and seats of learning in Europe date back to several centuries. Italy seems to be the first country in Europe to found an university: the University of Bologna was founded in 1088 and the word universitas was coined at its foundation. France came somewhat later with the University of Paris established in 1170. The Crakow University was founded in Poland in 1170, and the University of Pécs in 1367. The early universities were international centres of learning: at the renowned University of Padovaestablished in Italy 1222for instancestudents gathered for study from 22 countries. In the Middle Ages Europe saw the birth of several universities: the best known ones are Oxford and Cambridge in Britain, Padova, Siena, Macerata, Naples in Italy, and Salamanca and Valladolid in Spain. At present, in Hungary, we have 73 higher educational institutions (HEIs) www.mrk.hu , ranging from top research universities to minor colleges. Most Hungarian universities and colleges have extensive connections with other European HEIs, and many of them have gained international recognition.

Taiwan’s economic performance and achievements can be attributed to the synergy of contributing f... more Taiwan’s economic performance and achievements can be attributed to the synergy of contributing factors, several of which are cultural and societal in nature. Investment in and modernization of education and growing female empowerment stand out of these. Taiwan is more international than its Asian neighbor countries. International in the sense of multiculturalism, not only because of indigenous communities and minorities, but also because of the relatively great number of mixed marriages, and the influx of workers from countries of East Asia. And most importantly, international in the sense of the mindset of its people. In Taiwan, women’s liberation and gender equality evolved hand-in-hand with political liberation from autocracy to democracy, and human rights movements. These movements exerted a cross-fertilizing influence on one another and hence proved to be very powerful.

Rámutatunk arra, hogy a kultúra terén a várakozásokkal ellentétben a globalizáció előrehaladása ellenére, illetve mondhatni részben annak is tulajdoníthatóan az egységesüléssel párhuzamosan inkább a kulturális diverzifikáció látszik erősödni.Számba vesszük az e mögött meghúzódó társadalmi és szociálpszichológiai okokat-amelyek közül kiemelkedik az identitás fontossága. Konkrét esetek bemutatásával rávilágítunk a kulturális diverzifikációból adódó emberjogi, szociális, vallási és nyelvi kihívások sorára, amelyeket az egyes társadalmak és kultúrák eltérő módon és hatékonysággal kezelnek. Noha az egyéni szinten és a kollektív szinten jelentkező identitás problémák kezelésére egységes és azonos megoldás nincs, de röviden utalunk a média és oktatás szerepére a konfliktuskezelés, a véleményformálás és a közösségi kooperáció dimenziójában.
This article is part of a longer study in progress on the relationship of language use and societ... more This article is part of a longer study in progress on the relationship of language use and society with regards to kinship terminology. The article first gives some frame to the study by briefly introducing the concept of kinship, next different descent patterns in societies to be followed by categorization patterns of kinship terminology (Morgan) in Hungarian and Japanese. It is assumed that kin terms are valuable clues to the nature of a kinship system in a society as well as to the social statuses and roles of kinsmen, of the roles of men and women. Changes in kinship terminology also reflect to a certain extent changes of a given society. What is kinship? Kinship refers to the culturally defined relationships between individuals who are commonly thought of as having family ties. All societies use kinship as a basis for forming social groups and for classifying people. However, there is a great amount of variability in kinship rules and patterns around the world. In order to understand social interaction, attitudes, and motivations in most societies, it is essential to know how their kinship systems function. In many societies, kinship is the most important social organizing principle along with gender and age. Kinship also provides a means for transmitting status and property from generation to generation. It is not a mere coincidence that inheritance rights usually are based on the closeness of kinship links. Kinship connections are based on two categories of bonds: those created by marriage (affinal relatives: husband, wife, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law) and those that result from descent (consanguinal that is 'blood' relatives: mother, father, grandparents, children, grandchildren, uncles, aunts and cousins), which is a socially recognized link between ancestors and descendants. A third category of bond, referred to as fictive kinship, is used to create links to people who otherwise would not be kinsmen. Godparenthood is an example of fictive relationships in European cultures. This kind of bondness has been particularly important for instance in Hungarian culturewhere in village-communities this kind of relatedness meant a base for community cooperation, solidarity and mutual help. People often use different kin terms when addressing someone directly in contrast to when they are referring to them in a conversation with someone else. In Japanese culture for instance this distinction is clearly recognized by making a sharp difference between terms of address and terms of reference (okaasan versus haha, or otousan versus chichi).

The focus of the conference is Japanese education and childhood research. This topic is getting more and more popular amongst university students and children in Hungary. To get know this region better, we researchers decided to organize such a scientific gathering. We sent our call for papers to all Education and Japanology focused doctoral schools throughout the country, searching for researchers with similar interests. The aim of the conference is to build a bridge between these two disciplines, Education Sciences and Japanology, to start a discussion about Japanese Education.
