Dr. Dunleavy is an associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. Dunleavy teaches courses in visual communication, visual rhetoric, signs and symbols, photography, video production, data visualization, and new media. He is an award-winning photojournalist and with more than 25-years of newspaper experience. Dunleavy earned his PhD in Communication and Society from the University of Oregon in 2004 and was named a “Top Innovator” for his writing on visual culture by American Photography magazine in 2006. His most recently published work is a chapter on semiotics in the 2nd edition of The Handbook of Visual Communication Research w. Research interests include image ethics, signs and symbols, visual rhetoric, visual semiotics, social psychology, and cultural anthropology. Further, he has been published in the academic peered reviewed journal, Visual Communication Quarterly. From 2002- 2021 he was this publication’s bibliography editor. In this study, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the authors investigated the formatio... more In this study, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the authors investigated the formation of visual mental images in patients to determine how different areas of the brain are involved in emotional processing. Using 45 words during the encoding phase of the experiment, the participants were later asked to report whether they recalled the words as images or pictures. Ultimately, the researchers found that some “high” visual imagers encoded words and remembered them later as images.

Research results show that beginners noticed differences in letters more quickly, while readers with more experience were more accurate in visual processing. Further, the more features such as curves or whorls a letter had, the slower the beginner was. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how letters are visually processed and perceived through the specific letter characteristics as well as through the previous experience of the reader.

The author sheds light on public perception during a time of U.S. expansionism and the disruption of societal expectations of women. The study offers insight concerning how imperialism functioned in visual culture ideologically and shows how power dynamics, oppression, racism, sexism, and classist students were pervasive in the popular press.

Symbolic thought and behavior are among the most characteristic features of human life. The ability to assign symbolic meanings is uniquely human. Animals can only with their immediate environment, but man can transcend his physical surroundings through the principles of symbolization. Words are most important symbols but not only ones, gestures, objects, actions, and events are also used to express human values.

In addition, the symbolism of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral allows us to elaborate on the complex relationship between symbols of power and the media.

This study explores the meaning of incorruptibility in relationship to religious symbols from a s... more This study explores the meaning of incorruptibility in relationship to religious symbols from a social semiotic perspective regarding the discovery of a Catholic nun's well-persevered body after exhumation in April 2023 near Gower, Missouri. I introduce the question of how we can better understand the signifying religious and social practices surrounding the phenomena of incorruptibility.

I explore the symbolism of incorruptibility through three symbolic frames: metaphorical symbols, efficacious symbols, and numinous symbols. Ultimately, the symbolism of Sister Lancaster's body appears helpful in evoking core values of faith and bringing attention to the moral codes governing behavior.

At that time, my ideas were not entirely clear, but I felt it might be helpful to explore the symbolism of the flags from a semiotic perspective. This is a paper I am working on for publication. The premise of the study is to better understan... more This is a paper I am working on for publication. The premise of the study is to better understand the role flags, as national symbols, played in storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and how they can be interpreted symbolically. I suggest, flags and flag-waving reveals the strengths and weaknesses of flags as national symbols used in public discourse. I conclude, The symbolic function of flags is that they are useful in sustaining and legitimizing social order by confirming a range of moral and social convictions. In addition, flags displayed at the “Save America” rally and the Capitol riot can also serve to differentiate political groups vying for media attention.

There once was a time, only decades ago, when photography took some diligence, patience, and inte... more There once was a time, only decades ago, when photography took some diligence, patience, and intelligence. Today, in an age of auto-everything, the cell phone and its ancillary technologies such as surveillance cameras have become the oculus omnituens of the 21st century. As photographic technologies advance, understanding the fundamental principles of light and the mechanics of producing images are subverted by an industry determined to meet the demands for faster, easier, and cheaper products. In 2017, Infotrends reported more than 14 trillion images were made, predominantly on cell phones. This is a ridiculously large number, which means if you were to make 4 x 6 inch prints of each image; and lay them end-to end, the collection would nearly span the circumference of the earth. By 2020, researchers believe we will have created more than 40 zettabytes or 400billion gigabytes of data worldwide; much of this information is visual. The accelerated intensity of computational technologies producing photographs is outpacing our capacity for seeing and believing. We can now produce images that correct focal distortions in the camera, stitch together divergent and incongruent elements in a frame, and transcend time and space through computational adjustments. Themes include the encounter of Christians and pagans, the problem and methods of persecution and Christian responses, the role of art, engineering, and architecture, the historical and literary sources used in creating the novel, the theological and political setting of 19 th-century Europe (e.g., the political elimination of Poland during the 123-year partition by the Russian, Prussian, and Austro-Hungarian Empires), its reception in translations and films, the role of Sienkiewicz in the formation of John Paul II, how Christian teaching influenced pagan attitudes toward women, slaves, and foreigners, the elites and the poor. Student interest will help determine the selection and emphasis of the themes. (1 credit. pass/Fail.)
