( This is a picture of me at Farpoint in February with one of the guys from Dark Ops.Collapse )
Dark Ops Films is a fan run production company. In their spare time, with their own money, they wrote a script, built sets, made costumes, and filmed a movie.
“Dark Operations; A Dark Odyssey Begins” is the pilot episode of a series that will follow the epic journey of Captain Royce McGregor and his brave crew as they are recruited by Dark Ops for a mission almost certain to take their lives. Following the destruction of his ship, and the death of most of his crew, Capt McGregor and his fellow survivors find themselves pulled in to a society that the outside world doesn’t even know exists. Led by the highly decorated Admiral John Winston Cross, Dark Operations sits as Earth’s only hope for survival against the increasing Vrill threat. After the strong-arm recruitment by the Admiral, Capt McGregor and his crew are trained for battle and given Dark Operations’ newest flag ship. The USS Armstrong is a powerful warship built to survive the long engagement that her crew will face against the Vrill. As our pilot episode closes, Captain McGregor and his crew leave Dark Ops Head Quarters and begin their mission of genocide. Their goal: To neutralize the Vrill threat and return home.
They had the finished movie for sale on DVD atShore Leave Farpoint.
selannia and I each bought one, and signed up to be Dark Ops Supporters. ;) We just got emails the other day about auditions for parts they'll be filming soon. Maybe we'll go be extras in a space pub scene. *g*
I was pretty impressed with what they've turned out. They've written an epic story, with a lot of dark elements and wonderfully flawed characters. There's not much CGI, and the sets are pretty basic, but the story is interesting, and the acting's not bad. They've got aliens (bird people!), political intrigue, a dominatrix chick, and space pirates! There's really no bad here, people!
The production quality is obviously not on the same level as what we're used to seeing on the SciFi Channel, but hey, these are fans. People like you and me, and they made their own movie. I think that rocks. :)
ETA: I totally spaced on the fact that this was at Farpoint, not Shore Leave. *headdesk* *edits post* But I'm sure they'll be at Shore Leave too! *g*
