Mbalax: Cosmopolitanism in Senegalese Urban Popular Music

This dissertation would not have been possible without the help, friendship, and téranga of the m... more This dissertation would not have been possible without the help, friendship, and téranga of the many Senegalese who contributed to this project. Fallou Gaye, my first Wolof teacher, and his brother Cheikh found me housing on my first research trip to Dakar and Saint-Louis. Bakary Diallo, Amy Guindo, and Moussou Diallo graciously welcomed me into their home. Amy and Moussou taught me urban Wolof and took me to sabars, weddings, birthdays, baptisms, their natal home Mboolum, and taught me about family life, responsibility, elder respect, and perseverance. The rappers Black Mboolo were my HLM compatriots and introduction to Senegal's hip hop scene and street life. Njankou Sembene and Dieuf Dieul taught me the rudiments of mbalax, Doudou Sow and Number One Plus introduced me to salsa-mbalax, and Groupe Ceddo showed me how to dance and play afro-mbalax. There are many musicians, producers, DJs, rappers, scholars and dancers who helped me along the way including Marious Gouané, the staff and residents of Mt.

Richard Shain's Roots in Reverse: Senegalese Afro-Cuban Music and Tropical Cosmopolitanism joins ... more Richard Shain's Roots in Reverse: Senegalese Afro-Cuban Music and Tropical Cosmopolitanism joins the surge of scholarship over the past two decades focused on the influence of African Diaspora music on African popular music and culture. Shain argues that Afro-Cuban music played a significant role in the shaping of Senegalese national culture as a source of moral instruction and pleasure, and as a powerful influence on Senegalese subjectivity and agency in the black Atlantic imaginary. Shain seeks to redress the "myths" that Afro-Cuban music in Africa was stylistically stuck in the sones of the early twentieth century: that it was consumed and produced primarily for an African Westernized intelligentsia and elite in the 1950s and 1960s, and as a legacy of the colonial era, not authentically African. The author's methodology consists of fieldwork in Senegal, New York City, New Jersey, and Germany; analyses of audiovisual recordings, fiction, photographs and poetry; interviews; and participant observation in the clubs, homes, and neighborhoods of Dakar's Afro-Cuban musical community.
