The goal of this dissertation is to understand how Paraguay’s economical and political institutio... more The goal of this dissertation is to understand how Paraguay’s economical and political institutions, established in the post-Triple Alliance War, years impacted the country’s economic performance, and to ascertain if, between 1870 and 1890, Paraguay was able to recover from the economic consequences of the war. The pace of economic recovery versus that of demographic recovery is also highlighted. Official statistics produced by Paraguay in the timeframe, and also cards, newspapers and books from the era in scrutiny were used as sources. Paraguay, in 1870, was a destroyed nation. Five years of war against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, in a conflict that was concentrated in Paraguayan land, erased the pre-existing economic and political structures and sank the country into a heavy demographic crisis. Economic recovery proceeded at a very slow pace, slower than demographic recovery, and, while improvement in most economic indicators can be seen 1890 in relation to their respective levels in 1870, by the end of the period being studied the efforts in rebuilding weren’t enough to reestablish the levels of pre-war economic activity.

very well understood nowadays. This work’s goal was to study the evolution of Paraguayan monetary and public economies in the 1870s. We concluded that a vicious cycle was established in the country, where the State had to constantly implement short term focused measures to sustain its operations, measures that usually came with adverse consequences that swiftly presented themselves; concurrently, it was the decade’s experiences that motivated the sale of a large part of the country’s public lands in the 1880s, a decision which altered the country’s history in an irrevocable manner.
