This collection of critical redefinitions of Shakespeare's works proves his popularity nowada... more This collection of critical redefinitions of Shakespeare's works proves his popularity nowadays and the volume aims at giving new critical perspectives of his plays and non-dramatic works and thus marks 400 years of his death. The authors presented here observe Shakespeare delineating his plays as both theatrical and literary pieces; they compare his writings to those of his contemporaries and try to precisely position him either as Jacobean or Elizabethan; his works are studies in translation in different languages, which gives another dimension and deeper analyses of his literary merits and linguistic means utilised; the authors of this volume also inspect present-day perception and cognition of his works, which emphasises the importance of his works for the contemporary readership; linguistic inspection of Shakespeare's language sheds new light on the meaning of his works, while close readings of some of his plays reveal new interpretative possibilities and nuances of mea...
Poets of modernism were by and large preoccupied with the idea of disorder. This preoccupation re... more Poets of modernism were by and large preoccupied with the idea of disorder. This preoccupation reflected itself in their style, as well as in general views on post-World War I culture. Fragmented society, detachment from the past and tradition in many aspects of human lives, gradual liberation from social constraints and norms, density of cities and mobility of their inhabitants all of these factors led to new forms of viewing human culture. The Great Depression and its consequences strengthened the feeling of impossibility of loosening the grip of the past. The economic crisis also brought about a sense of pessimism in most men and women of the time. These were the social conditions that formed new aesthetics which consisted of two opposing stances: Pound s credo Make It New on the one hand, and the insistence on keeping traditional values on the other. In The Waste Land, as well as in several of his essays, T. S. Eliot glorifies the concept of disorder, but eventually tries to make his poem more comprehensible and orderly by providing explanations to his allusions in extensive endnotes. He also insists on filling the fissures of modern difficulties with numerous references to a meaningful past. The Waste Land s ideas of non-being and its sense of a nothingness of life that leads towards disorder are opposed to the implicit idea of establishing order. Likewise, in his essays, Eliot puts emphasis on the idea of imposing aesthetic / ideological order with his vision of an organic cultural unity. This duality of nothingness of life on the one hand, and establishing order and comprehensibility on the other, is reconciled by means of the aesthetic unity of opposites. The insistence on the aesthetic reconciliation of the above dichotomies, which Eliot sees as possible only in reference to the past, bears ideological traits common to many modernist writers. An

Seamus Heaney’s poetry often conveys the idea of place, a concrete Irish setting in a historic pe... more Seamus Heaney’s poetry often conveys the idea of place, a concrete Irish setting in a historic period, and in this way represents Irish national identity. As a socially concerned poet, he deals with the complexities of the Irish fight for independence, known as the Troubles, and in doing so he juxtaposes past and present and different, but still similar, spaces. This juxtaposition of different but similar historical periods and spaces both emphasizes the present-day political issues and gives them universality. The complexity of political issues falls under Lefebvre’s division of three types of space, which are mutually dependent and intertwined: physical space (nature, the Cosmos), mental space (logical and formal abstractions), and social space (the space of social practice) (12). With the aforesaid, this article considers the relationship between Heaney’s political views regarding the Troubles and his poetry. Heaney states his poetics of space in his poem “Sunlight” from the collection titled North with the following lines:

ivojin Rako evi was born in 1973 in Podgorica and has published four books of poetry and a number... more ivojin Rako evi was born in 1973 in Podgorica and has published four books of poetry and a number of articles dealing with literary criticism. Upon obtaining a degree in Serbian language and literature, he was employed as a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Philosophy in Pri tina. In the period between 2001 to 2005, he was an editor-in-chief at KIM Radio in Gracanica, Kosovo. Currently, he is an editor-in-chief of the magazine Glas juga in Gracanica. He won the “Brankova nagrada” award given by Matica srpska for the best graduation paper in Serbia and Montenegro and a prestigious award for poetry “Vidovdanska nagrada.” He was also awarded for investigative journalism and bravery in reporting with the award “Milan Pantic” during the pogrom of the Serbs in Kosovo in 2004. ivojin Rako evi is a poet whose work is strongly marked by social and political tumult. Although colored with the local setting, his poetry excedes the local and has universal meaning. The universality of his poetry is achieved by employing symbols and myths applicable and understandable to any culture or social milieu. Tradition and its values are very significant features of Rako evi 's poetry. They are not presented as mere inheritance from the past, but stand as a reminder of forgotten ethical values.

Even her feminism, though highly praised, has sometimes been regarded as lacking critical perspective and depth of political insight (Dalgarno 15-16). In this respect, she has been criticised as a materialist who propagates financial independence as the only means of realising one’s artistic inclinations and avoiding any kind of relentless censorship (Latham 12; Lee 505-522; Whitworth 91; Zwerdling 43). Although to some extent concurring and convincing, these statements seem to be far from the absolute truth and advance positions that should not be taken for granted. Scrutinizing the aesthetic and ideological in the works by Lawrence, Woolf, and Eliot, this book ... more Scrutinizing the aesthetic and ideological in the works by Lawrence, Woolf, and Eliot, this book gives a different perspective on Modernism and what are considered to be its principal features. In that respect, fragmentation, disunity, relativity of things, break with tradition, as well as the depiction of life’s disorder, are disputed and seen as aesthetic means for the promotion of certain ideologies. Aesthetics and Ideology of D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and T. S. Eliot offers a smooth transition from general discussion and revision of some fixed concepts related to Modernism, through individual authors and their major works to the conclusion where the main findings are summarized and further explicated. Apart from dealing with Modernism in general, Aesthetics and Ideology of D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and T. S. Eliot presents a somewhat different view on the authors it deals with. They are not only seen as opponents of established religious, political, and social views, but to a certain extent as their perpetrators. Aesthetics and Ideology of D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and T. S. Eliot offers a smooth transition from general discussion and revision of some fixed concepts related to Modernism, through individual authors and their major works to the conclusion where the main findings are summarized and further explicated.
Apart from dealing with Modernism in general, Aesthetics and Ideology of D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and T. S. Eliot presents a somewhat different view on the authors it deals with.
