Downtown Historic Banff

The Planning & Environment department is now accepting applications for the matching conservation grant for heritage properties. This grant provides up to $125,000 to successful applicants willing to legally protect their site as a Municipal Historic Resource. Please refer to section 6.3 of the Heritage Resource Management Policy and submit applications to Planning and Environment email or phone 403-762-1215.

For the 2026 grant, applications are due no later than 11:59pm on Thursday, May 15, 2026. Don’t leave it to the last minute, our door is always open to talk about future applications!

Matching Conservation Grant applications require the following information:

  • Application Form;
  • Letter with official request of Matching Conservation Grant including amount requested, amount contributed by the resource owner and summary of all information being provided with the request;
  • Project description, scope, and anticipated timelines. Include any supporting information demonstrating project need and benefits (for example: photos, reports, structural integrity assessment, building condition assessment);
  • Three quotations obtained from contractors for the proposed project to inform budgeting information (or, if not possible, demonstrated reasonable attempt to obtain three quotations);
  • Bylaw designating the site as a Municipal Historic Resource, or if not yet designated, a Statement of Significance endorsed by the Banff Heritage Corporation and a letter confirming the owner’s intent to designate the property as a Municipal Historic Resource;
  • Any further supporting information about heritage significance of the resource;
  • Overview of how the heritage significance and any character-defining elements are being maintained through the project;
  • Certificate of title; and,
  • Land Survey or Real Property Report.

Province of Alberta's historic resource conservation grants

The Province of Alberta’s Historic resource conservation grants provide matching grants to individuals and organizations for the following:

  • conservation work on Alberta's Provincial Historic Resources, Municipal Historic Resources, and Indigenous Historic Places 
  • studies and professional services associated with the conservation of Alberta’s Provincial Historic Resources, Municipal Historic Resources, and Indigenous Historic Places

 The maximum matching grant for conservation work is $50,000 for Municipal Historic Resources and $25,000 for studies and professional services. The deadline to apply for this grant is the first working day of February.
