This great transformation in technology has made the digitalization one of the main focuses of companies (Nylén and Holmström, 2015). With digital transformation, many technologies such as cloud computing, big data, internet of things, machine learning have entered our lives. As a result of this great impact, digitalization works are carried out in many areas from services and services to sales channels in almost every industry. For example, we see smart agricultural applications, smart-city and smart-home applications.
With its wide range of solutions, digitalization enters our lives as a factor that increases competition. Developing competition has led companies to provide faster and higher quality services, to produce solutions to customer problems in the fastest and optimum level, to reduce infrastructure problems, to increase their ability to perform proactive maintenance.
Operational efficiency is a factor that has a direct impact on companies' costs and service quality. Technologies such as machine learning, big data and robotics process automation, which are developed with digitalization, provide various opportunities to increase operational efficiency. Moreover, with the help of machine learning technologies in customer services, there are some applications such as chatbot, virtual assistant,
vi
predictive maintenance analysis applications, monitoring of capacity usage trends, automation of routine works with RPA solutions (Schreiber, et al., 2018).
When we look at the last decade of the telecommunications industry, it is seen that the revenues of voice, mobile and fixed services decreased (Caylar, Ménard, 2016). As a result, telecommunication operators have turned to business models to develop innovative products and services and to reduce operational efficiency and costs.
In this study, the effect of digitalization on operational efficiency in the Turkish Telecommunications industry will be investigated. In order to analyze the relationship between digitalization and operational efficiency, senior executives working in companies in the telecommunications industry were interviewed.
In the first part, the historical development of digitalization and its effects on business models in this development process are emphasized. In the second part, the concept of operational efficiency is examined. In the third chapter, the developments in the telecommunication industry and the effects of digitalization on the telecommunication industry are examined. In the last section, the research conducted by interview method and the findings obtained as a result of this research is given in order to investigate the effect of digitalization on operational efficiency.
