fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<h2>\n\t\tIt&#8217;s An Epidemic&#8230;.\n\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/backintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hunchback-Epidemic-850-500.png\" alt=\"hunchback epidemic\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"500\" width=\"850\" title=\"hunchback-Epidemic-850-500\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>Just look around these days and you&#8217;ll see most people <strong>looking down at their phones<\/strong>, <strong>hunching over their computers<\/strong>, and <strong>driving with terrible postures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to a study done by the\u00a0<em>International Journal of Physiotherapy and Research<\/em>, between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ijmhr.org\/ijpr.4.2\/IJPR.2016.117.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-abc=\"true\">66% and 90% of all population<\/a> suffer from a &#8220;forward head posture&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This posture has many other names like &#8220;Hunchback&#8221;, &#8220;Text neck&#8221;, &#8220;Turtle neck&#8221;, &#8220;Scholar&#8217;s neck&#8221; and others.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what you call it, <strong>this abnormal posture causes tightness\/pain, depletes your energy, makes you look unattractive\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> stops you from doing the physical activities you love<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the same study:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&#8220;Every inch the head moves forward ADDS an <strong>extra 10 pounds of weight<\/strong> to your neck.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/backintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Text-Neck-Progression-1.png\" alt=\"Text neck\" width=\"900\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yikes.<\/p>\n<p>See, all this weight distorts your spine&#8217;s natural alignment, creates movement dysfunctions and causes lingering pain&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more is that most people think that their forward head posture is an isolated issue&#8230; Separate from other physical and mental issues&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that this posture dysfunction can cause many other problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More explicitly, if your head protrudes forward, chances are that your shoulders are hunched also, and you are likely to have poor shoulder mobility, neck pain, headaches, low back pain, high stress, negative mood, low self esteem and more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is something I see almost no one talking about.<\/p>\n<p>All these dysfunctions are related.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tDo you have any of the following:\n\t<\/h2>\n\t&#8211; Hunchback posture (Rounded shoulders &amp; Forward head)<br \/>\n&#8211; Neck and shoulder stiffness\/pain<br \/>\n&#8211; Poor shoulder mobility<br \/>\n&#8211; Shoulder blade pain<br \/>\n&#8211; Headaches<br \/>\n&#8211; Low back pain<br \/>\n&#8211; Bulging or Herniated discs<br \/>\n&#8211; Stress or Negative Mood<br \/>\n&#8211; Low Self-Esteem<br \/>\n&#8211; Aches and pains when you sit<br \/>\n&#8211; The need to constantly crack your neck and back?<br \/>\n&#8211; shape curve to them.<\/p>\n<p>This &#8220;S&#8221; shape curve ensures proper alignment and MINIMUM STRESS on your joints, muscles and ligaments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s an image of a properly aligned spine:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Correct-Posture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, in today&#8217;s society most people have something closer to a &#8220;C&#8221; shape spine curve.<\/p>\n<p>This is an abnormal posture and places GREAT STRESS on the joints, muscles and ligaments in your upper back, neck and low back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s an image of most people&#8217;s posture:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Incorrect-Posture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tWhy It Causes Pain?\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>Because of your bad posture and alignment, your<strong> neck, shoulders <\/strong>and<strong> low back muscles have to work extra hard<\/strong> to maintain an upright position.<\/p>\n<p>These &#8220;overworked&#8221; muscles (aka &#8220;Overactive muscles&#8221;) become really tight and eventually lead to trigger points (muscle knots) in your neck and back area &#8211; causing pain and discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>Now there&#8217;s more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>abnormal hunchback posture shuts off our &#8220;postural muscles&#8221;<\/strong> (Such as mid back muscles and rotator cuff), which weaken overtime, therefore only exacerbating the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, <strong>poor posture can also cause serious low back issues<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Poor posture puts a lot of stress on the low back muscles and ligaments &#8211; causing pain and tightness.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, it compresses the discs of the spine &#8211; which can cause <strong>bulging discs<\/strong> and <strong>herniated discs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/backintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Text-Neck.png\" alt=\"Text Neck Pain\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"250\" width=\"250\" title=\"Text-Neck\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n<h2>\n\t\tSo, I&#8217;ll Just Stop Hunching, Alright?\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>It sounds simple enough right?<\/p>\n<p>You might say &#8211; &#8220;<strong>So I&#8217;ll just stop slouching and problem solved!<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll bring the phone to my eye level, drive with my shoulders rolled back, etc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If it was only that easy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See, despite your best intentions, simply trying to stop hunching and not looking down WILL NOT WORK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, you certainly need to adopt new good posture habits going forward and stop slouching.<\/p>\n<p>But it will not be enough.<\/p>\n<p>It took you years to get into this posture, it will a lot more to fix this.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tThere are 2 reasons for this:\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<strong>Reason #1: Your Nervous System<\/strong><br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve already trained your NERVOUS SYSTEM (Over many years) to slouch when you read, to look down at your phone, to round your back when you vacuum, to wash dishes with bad posture. <strong>You need to retrain your nervous system and link it with your postural muscles<\/strong> &#8211; with corrective exercises and the right technique.\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/backintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nervous-System.png\" alt=\"Nervous system\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"250\" width=\"250\" title=\"Nervous-System\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<strong>Reason #2: Muscle Imbalance<\/strong><br \/>\nDespite your best intentions you can&#8217;t simply &#8220;Straighten up&#8221; because of something called &#8220;Muscle Imbalance&#8221;. <strong>Some of your muscles now are way too tight and overactive<\/strong> &#8211; causing painful muscle knots and pulling you into a bad posture. Then you have <strong>other muscles that are too weak and &#8220;underactive&#8221;<\/strong> and will need to be re-educated and strengthened in order to maintain your upright posture.\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/backintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Muscle-Imbalance.png\" alt=\"Muscle Imbalance\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"250\" width=\"250\" title=\"Muscle-Imbalance\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>Here&#8217;s a direct quote from the <em>National Academy of Sports Medicine<\/em> about Muscle Imbalances:<\/p>\n&#8220;If muscles are not balanced, then the associated joint is directly affected.
