Autodesk Content Service is a Windows background service from Autodesk that powers the Content Explorer feature in supported Autodesk applications, such as AutoCAD. It continuously scans designated local folders and network shares, extracting metadata and in-drawing content from supported design files (for example, DWG) and building a centralized, searchable index. This enables fast, accurate searches for design assets—such as blocks, layers, linetypes, styles, and text—so teams can quickly locate and reuse content across projects. The service updates the index automatically as files change, can be deployed on individual workstations or centrally on a server for shared access, and respects existing Windows file permissions. Administrators can specify which locations are indexed and adjust indexing schedules to balance performance and freshness.
