One of the most recent technological advances that can be used as an educational tool is Augmented Reality, a technology that can combine virtual and physical objects in order to enhance the real world. However, little is known about this technology and its possible applications in primary and secondary education. This paper consists a literature review focused on AR and its current and future incorporation in modern education via various context aware technologies (e.g. tablets, smartphones) which can provide opportunities for more interactive and joyful educational experiences. Also, it is described the possibility of implementing AR in Open Course Project situations, such as the one which is available at the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of Technology. Its purpose is to inform “creators” and stimulate “users” so that the benefits of this promising technology may be d...

A variety of environments have been developed by researchers to introduce making principles to young students. Making principles enable them foster co-creativity and joy in learning processes and construct knowledge. By involving students in the design decisions they begin to develop technological fluency and the needed competences, in a joyful way. Make2Learn aims to bring together international researchers, educators, designers, and makers for the exploration of making principles towards the acquisition of 21st Century learning competences, by employing the state art aspects of entertainment technologies, new media, gaming, robotics, toys and applications. The main objective is to build a research community around this topical area. In particu...

This literature review examines studies that have used AR for direct intervention to people with ASD. It must be mentioned though that since the incorporation of AR in intervention programs is in its infancy, this literature review will only provide a review of the few initial studies that exist and also some proposals for future development and evaluation.

Since the use of these technologies is at an early stage, this paper aims to highlight the potential of cooperativity in conjunction with augmented reality technologies and mobile devices. For doing so, an application was created based on Geology-Geography courses of the 1 st grade of high school. The main objective of this paper is a brief description of collaborative learning theory and the technologies that are related to mobile devices and the presentation of the application's design and development procedure. The constructed application divides the class into groups and students collaborate via a quiz game for achieving common goals, with the assistance of augmented reality applications. Eventually, teachers score the results of each team and each student and uploads the grades, so that everyone can have access.

One of these useful tools is Augmented Reality, a technology that enables users to enrich the real world with virtual content. This paper presents the development of a mobile augmented reality application for primary education in order to make history course a more interactive and joyful experience. By combining the traditional school book with AR technology, physical images come to life and give more information about specific historical events or figures related to the Persian Wars, accompanied from a Quiz test that each student has to answer. Furthermore, a pilot study was conducted, in order to examine the educational performance of the application under real conditions. Further research may be focused in examining the expansion of such technologies in secondary and higher education situations (e.g. physics, biology), where traditional teaching methods do not manage to create a concrete base of knowledge due to the low level of experiential learning.

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disability that students present. It causes severe difficulty in reading and in general in language, that requires specific and specialized education. Since ICT's have been implemented in school classes, the incorporation of them in dyslexics' education can be accomplished easier. AR is an ICT tool that enables users to see and experience the real world mixed with various virtual objects, without losing the sense of reality. This tool can benefit dyslexic students and their educators since it can transform the learning procedure into more stimulating and entertaining. This paper consists a literature review focused on AR and its current and future incorporation in modern education of dyslexic students, something that can provide opportunities for more interactive and joyful educational experiences. Finally it presents a trial application that has been constructed for teaching six year old students the Greek letter " τ " (<tau>) and the results of its evaluation from educators.
