Hi people.
bizwac and I, maintainers of
vegan_au and
australian_vega respectively, have to decided to "archive" those two communities (close membership and restrict posting access, but keep the communities' content available for members' reference).
We are directing members to post instead to
aussie_veggies, which is a community similar in subject but a bit more active and with more members.
Most of you would in fact already be members of
aussie_veggies, but if not, here's the link to join.

Vegan-friendly places down under...

So it's been awhile since I've been in Oz, and things have changed. So I was wondering if anyone can recommend any new* "must do's" for vegans in Australia.
I'd prefer Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Perth ideas, but happy to hear about any other new things.
* where new is stuff that's opened or come onto the market in the past 2 years or so

Does anyone know of some vegan soap other than this one:
?
I like to wash my hands with squirty soap, but I find that one too fragrant, and it doesn't feel like it cleans.
EDIT: Or can I make some?

Aus Subway Wheat Bread

My SO got a sub from Subway yesterday, and I asked the lady if I could see the ingredients for the wheat bread. She cut out the ingredients list for me to take with me, so I figured I'd post them to let those Australians know what's in the wheat bread, in case you were curious.
Wheat Bread
Ingredients: Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Wheat Bran Sugar, Wheat Gluten, Canola Oil, Salt, Palm Oil, Soya Flour, Emulsifiers (472a, 481, 471), Malt Flour, Caramel, Enzymes, Food Acids (300, 330), Thiamine, Preservative (202), Anti-caking Agents (551, 535).
I haven't been able to find something saying whether the emulsifiers are definitely from animal source, nor 'Enzymes'.

Lament for homebrand fruit bars, yet exciting new chocolatey news

About two weeks ago I was looking for some vegan snacks to take to uni, since I had to get up at 6am & wouldn't be conscious enough to organise anything else. I found homebrand blueberry fruit bars, which were awesome, & noticed that the apple ones - which were in a newer packet - had milk products. Sure enough the new blueberry ones have come in with milk products too :(
If you would all join me in writing cranky letters and making cranky phonecalls to Homebrand, it would be greatly appreciated. And at least cathartic if not effective.
Contact details are here. I'm not entirely sure who to contact - the business manager?
In more positive news, vegan tim tams & mint slices have found their way on to my local woolworths shelves! In western sydney no less :O ! I was sad because vegan tim tams were sold out in cruelty free shop, and now they're right here in my supermarket - squeee!

I have just gained the ability to purchase online. I am very excited.
What are the best sites for:
Vegan shoes (I'm looking for some doc-style boots)
Vegan tasty things - lollies, fake cheese, etc.
Australian is obviously preferred.

So, what are you all making for Christmas this year?
I'm a bit stuck for ideas; the non-Australian vegan communities are all going crazy with the wintery recipes and the non-vegan Australian ones are all going crazy for seafood!
My family traditionally has a pesto pasta salad with lots of summery vegetables and olives and mushrooms (I can post the recipe if anyone wants it), and a Christmas pudding (which I'm undecided about this year... on the one hand, Christmas wouldn't feel quite right without a Christmas pudding, but on the other hand, it seems a bit ridiculous to be eating Christmas pudding in the middle of summer), but apart from that... I've got nothing.
Thoughts?
