“Jean Pucelle, Mahiet and the Fauvel Master: Relationships Between Manuscript Illuminators in Fourteenth-Century Paris.”

In the second quarter of the fourteenth century in central Paris, the illuminators Jean Pucelle, ... more In the second quarter of the fourteenth century in central Paris, the illuminators Jean Pucelle, Mahiet and the so-called Fauvel Master worked in close proximity. Although stylistically divergent, these three artists all benefited from contact with royalty, and they occasionally illustrated the same types of vernacular texts. This article will focus on four manuscripts that all contain versions of Miracles of the Virgin Mary: two examples of Gautier de Coinci’s ‘Miracles de Nostre Dame’ and two copies of Jean de Vignay’s French translation of Vincent de Beauvais’ ‘Speculum historiale’. In particular, it will examine the iconography of the miracle of the Thief Hanged. In the miniatures of the four manuscripts, there are strikingly sympathetic representations of the thief, which may be linked to the intended royal audience. The final manuscript for comparison, the ‘Ci nous dit’, is a codex that is not associated with royalty, Mahiet depicted two thieves in an exemplum in a much less compassionate manner.

The year 2015 witnessed both the translation of <i>Polychrome Sculpture: Meaning, Form, Conservat... more The year 2015 witnessed both the translation of <i>Polychrome Sculpture: Meaning, Form, Conservation </i> into English by Carola Schulman with an introduction and new edits by Michele D. Marincola and the re-issuing of the publication in a new format but in the original German, <i>Farbige Skulpturen: Bedeutung, Fassung, Restaurierung</i> by Callwey. Of course one of the major advantages of these brand-new publications from the 1978 original is the inclusion of new color photographs. It is a testament to the exceptionally vivid quality of description that the book has remained such a highly-respected volume on polychromy even with its original dependence on black-and-white images, with only 35 color plates. These new attractive editions filled for the most part (but not entirely) with color photographs are most welcome. The felicitous coincidence with the Colour exhibition in Cambridge, and its concomitant catalogue [1], should not be overlooked. Viewing these publications together, it would be difficult to see how anyone could still perceive of the Middle Ages as "dark." Although the title does not specify mediums or epochs, the book focuses almost exclusively on wood sculpture from the Romanesque to the Rococo periods, with a heavy emphasis on late Gothic sculpture in Southern Germany.

This is an admirable example of a type of book that is becoming an endangered species: the illumi... more This is an admirable example of a type of book that is becoming an endangered species: the illuminated manuscript monograph. As one would expect from such a book, it covers everything about the superbly decorated Christina Psalter (Copenhagen, The Royal Library, GKS 1606, 4˚) from date, provenance, and textual and visual analyses to patronage and interpretations for the intended reader. Although scholars have discussed various aspects of the manuscript in isolation, Vidas's book is the first comprehensive account and will now become the definitive study.
