This paper articulates Augustine's understanding of the value of Eucharist as sign and as means o... more This paper articulates Augustine's understanding of the value of Eucharist as sign and as means of sanctification, namely, as both sacrament and "true presence;" Augustine holds closely the notions of Christ's incarnate body, his ecclesial body and his eucharistic body. It does so in conversation with the history of the reception of Augustine's Eucharistic theology as more "spiritualized."

This article demonstrates that receiving Holy Communion in the hand was the common practice of th... more This article demonstrates that receiving Holy Communion in the hand was the common practice of the Church both East and West from the second through to at least the eighth century. This practice was seen as reverent by the Fathers, and there is no indication that this practice was considered more inclusive of the laity. The article concludes by offering some suggestions of how to understand reverence in the Church today in light of this historical research.

In a well-known scene from the Passion of Perpetua and Felicity, Perpetua has a vision in which s... more In a well-known scene from the Passion of Perpetua and Felicity, Perpetua has a vision in which she is given cheese by a heavenly shepherd. This paper argues that the cheese which Perpetua receives is eucharistic, and that the vision is best understood as a heavenly rite of initiation. Scholarly views of the reception of cheese as essentially interchangeable with the reception of milk cannot be supported. Perpetua’s cheese should be interpreted as eucharistic even if it does not reflect any actual liturgical practice involving cheese, as both textual and contextual evidence make a eucharistic reading compelling.
The biblical images in the vision, including the transformation of milk into cheese, support this liturgical reading. The article concludes by arguing that the Passio as a whole envisions martyrdom as a public liturgy.
