This report presents the findings of preliminary research into the perceptions of overall stakeho... more This report presents the findings of preliminary research into the perceptions of overall stakeholder satisfaction of eight Auckland secondary schools of the Leadership through Peer Mediation (LtPM) programme, a core programme of the Foundation for Peace Studies Aotearoa New Zealand (the Peace Foundation). The research was commissioned by the Peace Foundation with funding assistance from the Metro ITP Voucher Scheme, and was conducted in the second half of 2015. A core aim of the LtPM programme is to empower students as ‘ambassadors of social justice’. The programme trains students in the mediation processes and leadership skills needed to assist peers to resolve personal conflicts in a peaceful manner.

Abstract This paper focuses on Māori, monarchy and the representation of Meghan Markle within the... more Abstract This paper focuses on Māori, monarchy and the representation of Meghan Markle within the context of Aotearoa New Zealand with its bicultural foundation and ties with the Crown. Historically, Māori as tangata whenua (indigenous people of the land) have a significant relationship with the Crown as a Treaty of Waitangi partner. Queen Victoria's representative, Governor William Hobson, signed Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi), the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand, on her behalf on 6 February 1840. Since this time, many Māori remain loyal to the British monarchy and there has been an expectation that Queen Victoria and her descendants would honour the Treaty. As a direct descendent of Ngatata-i-te-Rangi, a signatory of the Henry Williams copy of the Treaty, the paper also brings my own indigenous lens to both the representation of Meghan Markle and Māori perspectives on monarchy.

INTRODUCTION: According to Census 2013, approximately 25% of Auckland’s population is Asian, wit... more INTRODUCTION: According to Census 2013, approximately 25% of Auckland’s population is Asian, with the majority of these being Chinese. Given that Aotearoa New Zealand’s population is ageing, it can be expected that there will a significant demand for aged services for Chinese older adults in our local community in the future. Exploring the language barrier encountered by retired and aged (65+) Chinese migrants living in Auckland is needed. METHOD: Two focus groups were interviewed with retired Chinese migrants (group 1) and local social service practitioners (group 2). The focus group topics included the living experience of Chinese migrants in Auckland in Aotearoa New Zealand, while local social service practitioners reported their daily work experience of serving Chinese older adults. A short, warm-up, oral questionnaire stimulated discussion in each group. Aotearoa/New Zealand is a relatively wealthy country with robust social services. Unfortunately, HIV and AIDS prevention and support tends to fall to nongovernment and grassroots voluntary agencies. Nevertheless some inspiring, exceptionally high-quality policies and practices have emerged through Government policies and engagement of people living with HIV.

(1) Betty was known as 'Ma Betty' to hundreds of street kids in the years she worked as a house-mother at the Arohanui Trust hostels she helped establish in Auckland, New Zealand. Ironically, her position as house-mother created a public identity that was at odds with her own self-perception as a mother and grandmother. This paper discusses the central paradox in Betty Wark's life and examines how personal narratives can highlight the often contradictory experiences of motherhood and the ways in which women negotiate the constructions of idealized 'motherhood' and consequential 'mother guilt' when inevitably such constructions are not realized.
