Jechoniah Agabi holds a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning. He is a lecturer, the Head of the Urban and Regional Planning Department, and the Dean of the School of Environmental Design of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria. He is a Registered Town Planner and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Town Planners. He is a PhD student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. His research interests include disaster management, climate change and food security, infrastructure, environmental management, and general town planning.

Entrepreneurship development is an impetus for the transformation of rural economies. This paper seeks to highlight the relevance of entrepreneurship development in the transformation of Nigerian rural economy. World Bank records, United Nation’s Reports and IFAD’s statistics indicates that the population of the developing countries is more rural than urban with about 55 per cent of the population living in the rural areas. Rural resources capable of transforming the rural economy abound, yet the scourge of poverty is harder on the rural populace. The paper identifies the kinds of entrepreneurs in the rural areas and emphasizes the prospects and constraints of rural enterprise development. Recommendations are made on how to promote entrepreneurship development so as to accelerate rural economy. This shall bring about creation of employment, eradication of rural poverty and enhance high living standard.
