Princeton Seminary defended the teachings of the Reformation in a way that no other American scho... more Princeton Seminary defended the teachings of the Reformation in a way that no other American school did. In doing this it drew from the teachings of Augustine, John Calvin, Francis Turretin, Jonathan Edwards, and Thomas Reid. Its defense was centered on the claim that all persons can know God. This is sometimes understood as common sense philosophy. However, it is better understood as the central teaching of the Reformation. The knowledge of God and the good is available to all so that unbelief is without excuse. The soteriology of the Reformation presupposes that all humans have turned away from this knowledge. Princeton's defense of the knowledge of God was therefore a defense of Reformation teaching.

In these arguments he is testing Eve’s understanding of God. Satan is engaged in a kind of unsound natural theology. This chapter studies Hodge’s views on natural theology. Natural theology is the study ofgeneral revelation. If general revelation is clear then humans should be able to respond to all forms of anti-theism, including the claim that a human can become God.

Princeton University, originally the College of New Jersey, was founded out of the need to train ... more Princeton University, originally the College of New Jersey, was founded out of the need to train ministers for the Presbyterian Church. William Tennent Sr. met this need by starting the Log College that occupied an official position of training ministers. As schools in New England increasingly departed from Reformed Orthodoxy, Presbyterians were hesitant to send students to these colleges for training. When the First Great Awakening created a revival in religious piety the need for a college to train ministers became clear. The founding purpose of the college was to train ministers in piety, which requires knowing God and the duty that God requires of humans. From the beginning the knowledge of God was mixed with the beatific vision in the afterlife.

The grievances justifying independence rest on the claim that there are some things self-evident about God and human nature and from these come human rights and the structure of human government. Specifically, the Declaration of Independence claims it is self-evident that there is a Creator and that humans are created. Human equality and rights rest on this claim about creation. The eventual Constitution and Bill of Rights are further examples of the development of general revelation into the political and social realms as opposed to appeals to divine origination or special revelation. The exact quote is so well known it hardly needs repeating, but we can benefit from thinking about its structure: "We hold these truths to be selfevident: that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights." We can discern three parts here: epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. There is the epistemological claim, or a claim about knowledge, that some things are self-evident. There is the metaphysical claim about what is real: God the Creator and human nature. And there is the ethical claim about equality and rights. The present chapter will look at religious liberty and natural religion. This will involve questions about reason, knowledge, meaning, and critical thinking. We will discover three overlooked areas where this critical thinking needs to take place and then use a paradigmatic religious freedom trial to illustrate the form such trials take and identify a solution that has been available to us for some time but left neglected. These three areas are natural religion, reason, and presuppositional thinking. For a paradigmatic religious freedom trial, we will examine the trial of Socrates. The argument is, first, that religion has to do with meaning, and the beliefs that provide meaning cannot be compelled. We will see this explained by Thomas Jefferson and exemplified in Socrates. This theory about the origin of life has always been debated, but increasingly the focus is on the religious presuppositions behind its claims. While previous criticisms of Darwinism were usually sidestepped by its adherents as mistaken literal readings of Genesis, these new criticisms are more devastating. These criticisms call into question the very method used by Darwinists to arrive at conclusions, and present more coherent interpretations of the empirical evidence. One author who is calling into question the presuppositions of Darwinism is Cornelius Hunter. As a post-doc in molecular biophysics he is not a newcomer to the area of scientific research. His books Darwin's God and Darwin's Proof focus on the assumptions about God behind Darwin's theory, and what a possible replacement would look like. Thomas Woodward has provided a history of the intelligent design movement that focuses not only on the major persons and ideas, but also on how scientific persuasion takes place. The importance of this for the study of religion is that it demonstrates the importance of religious beliefs to scientific theory. Far from being objective, science assumes some theory of reality to justify its claims about origins and existence. What particularly concerned Darwin was the problem of evil. The natural evils in the world led Darwin to conclude that God would not create things as they are. He therefore sought a process that served as an intermediary between God the creator and the present world filled with misery and waste. Darwinism is in this sense a theodicy.
