Successful completion of exams may be required as part of ASTTBC’s registration requirements. The type of exams and requirements will depend on the designation being applied for. Staff will advise the applicant directly when an exam is required during the application/registration process.

Professional practice and ethics (PP&E) exam
Who: required for all ASTTBC registrations, except student applications
When: completed after an applicant has satisfied all other requirements for registration, staff will advise
Location: online, self-administered
Time: 2 hours
Passing score: 80.0%
Questions: 60, with weighted scoring
Format: multiple choice, true or false, matching

AScT: technical (certification) exams
Notice: Effective January 2026, the AScT Technical (Certification) Exams will only be administered through a virtual proctoring service to ensure fair, accessible testing for all candidates.
ASTTBC has partnered with ASET (Association of Science Engineering Technology Professional of Alberta) and Meazure Learning (exam proctoring services) for the technical (certification) exams for AScT registration.
Who: required for applicants who have not completed a TAC technologist-level accredited program for the discipline or applicants who graduated from an accredited program but are applying for a different discipline than completed education, and there is a discipline-specific exam available or applicants who have completed a technician-level program in applied science and engineering technology and are seeking reclassification from CTech to AScT.

*If there is no discipline-specific certification exam available for your discipline, you will be assigned the fundamentals of technology exam.
When: completed after an applicant has satisfied all other requirements for registration, staff will advise
Location: administered on a computer in one of Meazure Learning’s exam centers or through a virtual proctoring service. The virtual proctoring method of exam delivery uses a webcam with a virtual proctor to allow the candidate to write the exam from a home or work office. This method has additional requirements that are outlined in the certification handbook.
Time: the exam is closed book and is three hours in duration.
Passing score: varies depending on certification exam. See applicable certification handbook for details on the passing score.
Format: the examination consists of 110 multiple-choice questions, including questions with graphs, diagrams, and schematics and questions that require calculations. There are 10 experimental questions of the 110 that are not counted towards the candidate’s exam score. These items are used for future exam development following the Embedded Field Testing Method. Each multiple-choice question has four answer options, only one of which is correct. Exam questions vary in the level of cognitive difficulty.

RFPT: challenge exams
Who: challenge exams are available for all RFPT endorsements.
Completion of a challenge exam is mandatory for the FP (stationary fire pumps) and GS (emergency generator systems) endorsements.
Applicants who have not met the educational requirements for an endorsement may request to complete a challenge exam as part of their registration application.
When: a challenge exam is completed after the submission of a complete RFPT application for the endorsement. Successful completion of the challenge exam is required before the application can proceed to file review.
Location: paper-based, proctored in-person exam. Electronic devices such as smart phone or tablet are not permitted in test room.
Time: 3 hours
Passing Score: 80.0%
Format: exams are open-book

ROWP: jurisprudence exam
Who: required for ROWP applicants
When: completed after an applicant has satisfied all other ROWP requirements for registration including the PP&E exam.
Location: online, proctored virtually or in person at a testing center
Time: 1.5 hours

Format: multiple choice, true or false, matching

CTech: Certification Exam
ASTTBC has developed a Certified Technician certification exam for CTech registration.
Who: required for applicants who have not completed a technician-level accredited program.
When: completed after an applicant has satisfied all other requirements for registration, staff will advise
Location: administered on a computer in an ASTTBC approved exam center or through a virtual proctoring service. The virtual proctoring method of exam delivery uses a webcam with a virtual proctor to allow the candidate to write the exam from a home or work office.
Time: the exam is closed book and is three hours in duration.
Passing score: The pass mark is 70 out of 110 (63.64%).
Format: The exam consists of 3-option multiple choice test items.
Certification exam handbook: A handbook was created to assist applicants in preparing for the exam. The handbook includes information on eligibility, exam format, structure and timing, permitted materials, and results. Its purpose is to ensure that candidates clearly understand what to expect and what is required of them before, during, and after the exam.

How do I register for an exam?
The registration coordinator assigned to your application file will advise when an exam is required and how to register.

How much does the exam cost?
Fees are listed in the ASTTBC bylaws. Payment is required for each exam and each attempt. Exam fees are non-refundable.

What are the exam rules & procedures?

How many times can I take an exam?
An applicant has three attempts to successfully complete the exam. Payment of the exam fee is required for each exam attempt.
Applicants who fail an exam three times must apply to the credentials committee for permission to write the exam again.

After a failed exam attempt, how long do I have to wait to rewrite an exam?
There is a two-week waiting period to rewrite an exam after the first attempt.
There is a one-month waiting period for any subsequent attempt.

How long do I need to wait for results?
The final score and next steps are communicated directly to the examinee by email as soon as practicable.
ASTTBC online exams
At the end of the exam, you will be provided with an exam score. Note, the score is provisional until the results are reviewed and confirmed by registration staff.
Paper-based exams
The length of time to receive your results may depend on factors outside of ASTTBC’s control (i.e. Canada Post delivery delays).
Certification exams
Candidates are emailed their exam results within two to three weeks after the exam date.

How can I get a copy of my exam?
Due to confidentiality of the exam, copies are not provided for passed or failed exams.

How do I request special accommodations for the exam?
Special accommodations to take the exam may be requested for documented reasons like medical, learning disability, etc. Requests for accommodation must be submitted in writing, with supporting documentation, at least 30 days before the date of exam. Please read section 3.13 of the ASTTBC examination policy and procedures for details.
