OAD Innovation Hub

Rationale

Over the past fifteen years, the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) has distributed more than 1.5 million Euros toward 250+ projects, advancing STEM education and capacity building, reducing inequalities, and supporting entrepreneurship and rural development. While these initiatives have delivered significant results, the OAD is now evolving its strategy to capture the under-utilised technical and business potential within the field. 

Historically, astronomy-for-development efforts have frequently been short-term, isolated initiatives with outcomes that are difficult to quantify. In contrast, astronomy research continually yields frontier hardware and software that, when commercialised, have resulted in transformative technologies like MRI and LASIK

Beyond technological innovations, astronomy has potential to spur innovation within the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) space, such as astronomy tourism and small-scale manufacturing.

The Innovation Hub will bridge the gap between academia and industry, aiming to ensure that investments in discovery sciences generate a sustainable, long-term impact.

Strategy

Similar to the current OAD setup, the Hub will act as a facilitator for technology transfer and astronomy-focused business, providing structured support to astronomy institutions, including IAU members and OAD regions and partners. The envisaged support includes the following:

    • Innovation Model Development: Facilitating best practice around formal frameworks for the successful commercialisation of astronomy-related technologies, adapted for Global South contexts
    • Ecosystem Integration: Cultivating deep relationships with venture capital, tech incubators, and the global startup landscape
    • SME business creation: Supporting small businesses to monetise astronomy-based products and services (such as astrotourism)
    • Spin-off Acceleration: Identifying technologies and SME areas with high commercial potential for new venture creation
    • Sustainable Funding: Maintaining a non-profit mission through government and philanthropic grants, supplemented by income from specialised entrepreneurship training for researchers, business support, and related services.

The primary goal of the Innovation Hub is to stimulate impact through astronomy business and innovation. The Hub will also institutionalise partnerships that strengthen the global standing of the IAU and OAD. By integrating tech-driven innovation into the OAD strategy, the Hub intends to deliver long-term, measurable social and economic development outcomes from astronomy.

Current Gaps at the OAD

  • Systematic support: Lack of resources for business support and infrastructure; OAD projects do not receive sustained support to develop business models and market strategies, leaving innovations without a path from discovery to commercial viability.
  • Technical projects: Lack of capacity to nurture technical projects with impact beyond astronomy

Innovation Hub Role

The Hub will serve as a facilitator bridging astronomy research and commercial impact, developing tailored innovation models and working with stakeholders across the spectrum. Its ultimate aim is to stimulate economic development through astronomy via

  1. Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Development
    Supporting the creation of SMEs around astronomy-based products and services such as astrotourism and data analytics.
  2. Spin-off Acceleration
    Working with startup incubators and accelerators and other entrepreneurship ecosystem organisations to promote technology-based venture creation in astronomy.

Core Functions

SME Hub:
Focus: Businesses using astronomy (astrotourism, telescope or component manufacturing, data analytics)
Duration: 6 months – 1 year 
Support: Business support, mentorship, seed grants.

Venture Hub:
Focus: Venture-scalable, tech-enabled startups from astronomy IP
Duration: 4-6 years
Support: Commercialisation guidance, trainings, investment readiness support, networks

Both tracks bridge discovery science and commercial industry, embedding entrepreneurship within astronomy culture for long-term, sustainable impact.

Roadmap

Phase 1 (2026):

Phase 2 (2027):

  • Discussions with relevant stakeholders
  • Co-develop training on commercialisation for the astronomy community
  • Initiate working groups on framework development for supporting astronomy ventures

The Innovation Hub will build upon existing and new OAD programs and projects, including the flagship initiatives, OAD grants program, and the upcoming Research Institute.
