They were represented into architectural drawings by professional architects in the 1950’s and in the early 1960’s. For decades the files stayed archived . Now I revitalize the houses from the shelves through the digital three-dimensional reconstructions. The recreated houses and their adjacent areas are represented very close to their real counterpart. However, on the way between buildings and drawings information has been lost. I fill the gaps with my own architectural creativity. In this sense, as a result of my project artistic Transition 1, namely from paper to digital space, they are artefacts themselves. 3 views

The study focuses on the most important methodological component, namely the structure of the source data according to their verification. The reconstruction in a digital environment aims to replicate the construction process of the tomb, which is the distinctive difference to the visual analysis. Further illustration of the reconstruction process is introduced with the production of accompanying graphic diagrams to the visualization, which are important steps of the conceptualizations of the tomb architecture.

The attention is focused on the architectural archive at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences where a cultural architectural heritage is collected over decades. Specifically, research interest is towards the collections in fund "Drawings and Surveys" conducted on the case study of a 19th century house of the Hrusanovi brothers in the town of Sungurlare. The building was depicted in plans and facades on paper 60 years ago. In development the knowledge on this old architecture is boosted by transforming it into a digital three-dimensional structure through two software applications. The analysis consists of reading of the archived drawings in the context of reconstruction and achieving a high level of authenticity in it.

3D digital reconstruction of lost houses and their spatial analysis in virtual reality on the case study of the Tuleshko Bey house in Berkovitsa, 2022

Scientifically I test a method where I use contemporary technologies and reconstruct digitally and three-dimensionally on one hand, and on other I observe in virtual reality houses from 19th century. The research approach consists of two components and is conducted on the case study of Tuleshko bey house in town of Berkovitsa. Com-ponent one (1) includes collecting data and reconstructing the old house. In it, the scientific tasks are according to key points of the London Charter, namely data sources for 3D reconstructions are presented clearly in order to assess the result authenticity. In component two (2) I enter into the virtual reality of the house through software and VR headset to explore its spatial organization. Finally I outline new opportunities for contemporary consideration of architectural heritage.

of 19th Century House. In this paper I present part of the cultural heritage in the archive “Architecture” at the Institute of Art studies through the opportunities provided by the software technologies for three-dimensional digital architectural reconstructions. According to established by me criteria, I developed a collection of ten architecturally recorded in 1950-s old buildings from the 19-th century. I start the three dimensional reconstructions with a house in town of Nessebar, situated at the Black sea coast. The research focus is to discover not only on the technical and mathematical parameters of this building, but also philosophical and poetic aspects in the architecture. In some essential points of my analysis, I refer to the thesis of the American architect and researcher Peter Eisenman: firstly to his definition for canonical building and secondly to his methodology of repetition in the close reading of architecture.
The thesis I defend through the reconstruction is that this house is an office building made of wood and stone. Like Eisenman’s methodology, I disassemble the original composition of the project into a series of components for rethinking. I look at the elements independently: yard, stairs, cavity, walls, chimney, windows. I find in the house the contrasting ideas of slowness and of acceleration.

In my close contact with the archives I look both back and forward in order to rethink the Architecture Archive and reach a new grasp of and attitude to its meaning. In the article, on the one hand, I undertake an overview of the collected archival units in the chronological order of their acquisition and and also according to the structure established by the archive’s original creators and, on the other hand, I present in perspective a thesis about the archive’s future in the development of personal archival collections. The aim of the study is to define an approach to the digitalization of the Architecture Archive so that it could meet modern standards and concepts regarding the digitalization of archives. Theoretical but also scientific-applied issues of the archive have been considered, the general discourse of which was born within the context of the project activities, called “Cultural Heritage in the Archives of the Institute of Art Studies: Interactive Map of the Arts in Bulgaria”. In the article I emphasize the importance of the fact that this project gets funded through the agencies for regional development of the European Union and is thus positioned within the cultural paradigm of “Europe”. Last but not least, I believe that the article in terms of giving an overview is something of an invitation and initial reference point for conducting new research through the digital database of the Architecture Archive, which is currently underway.

In order to achieve a more complete picture of the ancient hinterland, I have conducted a comparative study and additionally developed graphical reconstructions of the hinterland of two other Roman settlements – Serdica and Augusta Traiana. All three towns were situated in the Roman province of Thrace and are now located in the territory of Bulgaria. The research project results in 12 drawings – territorial schemes. Three of them show the identified areas, while the remaining 9 drawings correspond to three factors according to which the areas were located. These factors are altitude, soil fertility and river networks in the hinterland of Philippopolis, Serdica and Augusta Traiana. The project’s significance is in its methodology and the fact that it addresses broader theoretical questions on Roman te...

The study is based on data collected from field work in three prefabricated concrete neighborhoods in Sofia. The counterparts of vine trellis, benches with table, flower beds, fences resemble the visual register of domestic yard of the Revival, which is not the world that surrounds us but the one created by Bulgarian literature, media and tourism industry. In the "collective unconscious", from where the creator of homemade artefacts derives their imagery, there is another architecture - pastoral paradise that intersects with the architecture of prefabricated concrete housing in certain places.

Its architecture is connected with the work of many Bulgarian architects: Nikola Lazarov, Pencho Koychev, Peter Zagorski, Nikola Nikolov, Liubomir Semerdziev. It traces a period of over 100 years from the initial architectural competitions through its construction, finishing works and decoration, changes of function to restoration and conservation. The comparative analysis between the design stages, number of architects in team, duration of design, opens opportunity for discussion on the development of Bulgarian architectural practice through the case study of the Court House in Sofia

1 Д. Abstract:
The research object of this presentation is the borderline as urban planning archetype that appears virtually in different interpretations and takes real shape in architecture. The research aim is to follow the archetype borderline in the legend for the Rome foundation, in the ritual of establishing a new urban structure, in the roman politics and in roman urban planning. It concerns specifically the presence or absence of town borderline - town wall in Pautalia, Serdica, Philipopolis and Augusta Trajana from I to III century. It tries to find out the reasons for the deviation from the roman urban planning archetype for a time of 130 years.
Abstract:
In this presentation, the Roman town is studied from the premise that it was a constant and open process and, therefore, it was not established once and for all. It required permanent evidence of urban status that was encoded in the construction of monumental buildings, structures, streets and squares. The boundary location of nucleus and periphery is followed graphically in temporal steps of 50 years in the time frame from the first to the third centuries AD.
Abstract
I address in my presentation the location of Roman public baths in three roman towns in the province of Thrace – Serdika, Philippopolis and Pautalia, from the perspective of urban planning. They are now in the territory of South Bulgaria and overlap with the central zones of contemporary Bulgarian towns respectively Sofia, Plovdiv and Kyustendil. The time frame of this study is limited in the period of II - III centuries A.D which is main phase of bath building activity. I argue that the bath position in urban fabric is not left to chance but result of imperial urban planning policy. The composition of monumental buildings determines urban scenario which must be experienced and followed as one is walking through the roman town. I define bath building position in Serdika, Philippopolis and Pautalia in coordination to main town streets, other public buildings, proximity of town walls and gates. By a comparative analysis among 20 towns in the Roman East and the position of 27 baths in them, I find tendency in bath building location and comment it on the case studies of Serdika, Philippopolis and Pautalia.
Abstract
Abstract:
Vitruvius writings On Architecture has been analized several times during the centuries with different and contradicting interpretations. Their disadvantage is that they are projections of their authors’ own times. In the beginning of 20th century it was accumulated a critivcal quantity of data as a result of archeological discoveries of Roman architecture and the empire in general. The established new conditions allowed objective, in context, research of Vitruvius books. Thus the new idea appeared by a generation of researchers and supported till nowadays that On Architecture is a law consisting of building codes, rules and standarts that defined the architecture and building practice in the empire.
The objective of my research is to present how the written text literally defines architecture. I juxtapose by parallels the architectural models of Vitruvius and the built architecture on the Balkans from I to III A.D. I try to find answers to the questions: to what extent the rules are followed and compromised in practice and why.
Volume 1 of PARCS opens with an article by the 2013 Eugene Schuyler Lecturer, Prof. Dennis Hupchick. Th e article, entitled "James F. Clarke: Pioneer of Bulgarian Historical Studies in the United States," was presented in the aula magna of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in March 2013 and is most suitable for the inaugural volume of
PARCS. Prof. Clarke was an American pioneer in Balkan studies; his family was involved in missionary and diplomatic service in the region since the later 19th century.
All other papers in this volume spring from a two-day conference organized by ARCS, October 25–26, 2012, Communications and Commerce in the Balkans from Alexander
the Great to Alexander Battenberg. The papers present case studies of issues concerning the agents and organization of communication and commerce (private, State/military), the mechanisms of communication and commerce (e.g., rivers and ports, roads and highway stops, vehicles, marketplaces, information media, travel times), and the objects of exchange (e.g, agricultural goods and raw materials, finished goods, information and practices). The work of thirteen scholars are presented here; the chronological range begins in the classical period and ends in the late Ottoman period.
