Theoretical studies are the foundation of learning skills process besides of the practical exercises at different levels to develop ability of art students in art education.
Shortage of specialized theoretical and practical information on different arts is one of the serious obstacles in the process of creative thinking and producing artistic products. A mural art is one of these arts that despite of its popularity and functions have only few information resources. Because of numerous functions and applications, this artistic media always has been used to meet the aesthetic, cultural and social needs since long time ago up to now. Mural art has received considerable attention as an artistic strategy with the aim of livability in urban communities in the past two decades. Therefore, it is necessary to publish old and new know-how for different mural arts for better artistic performance, productivity and result. This is a main reason to publish this book to share a wide range of practical and essential skills with art students and others.
The present book is based on this approach and related policies to develop technical knowledge of the mural arts by Tehran Beautification Organization. This is a first written book in the mural arts' techniques and it can meet the needs of practical training to whoever wants to learn practical skills and implement in walls' projects.
Mural art or painting is a process of implementing, installing, drawing, writing and creating any visual effect of flat, depressed, raised, text, image, color and colorless on the surface. Sometimes, it refers to result or final product of this process. In this case, it is a term that used for a variety of wall mural and graffiti works in the field of mural arts for any artistic product on the surface with any techniques and materials by muralist.
This book is the result of many years experience of teaching and creating artwork, in addition to, four years field study and collecting data. It is written and published with following objectives for the mural arts:
- Enhance of theoretical / practical knowledge;
- Review and upgrade of prior knowledge and experience;
- True figure out and appreciate of traditional methods and techniques;
- Recognize and introduce newfound methods, techniques and skills;
- Communicate tool between ideas and techniques;
- try to increase level of confidence in enthusiasts;
- Amplify of technical creativity;
- Improve of practical teaching and learning;
Sometimes, some topics in this book are deliberately beyond the conventional techniques in the mural arts. They refer to interdisciplinary methods or techniques. Visual examples are only for information.
This 424-page book briefly refers to mural arts applied techniques for exterior and interior spaces. It has been used a few available domestic but more foreign literature and in some cases internet sources after the evaluation and validation.
It has been tried to explain a series of the mural arts techniques with simple language and appropriate terminology. The target group of this article is art students and whoever is familiar with the professional art. But according to describing method of all elements and principles of the mural arts, it seems a wide range of users can make benefit from this book.
In general, all techniques are discussed in this book as follow:
Mural techniques with color, including:
Wall painting techniques with Encaustic, Tempera, Fresco, Transparent colors (Dye, ink and watercolor), Oil paint, Acrylics, Graffiti, Printmaking, Street chalk art (Floor Painting with chalk).
Mosaics arranging techniques, including:
Mosaic, Moarragh Tiles, Polychrome tiles (Especial 7 color tiles), disordered broken tiles, Mirror Mosaic, Collage.
Embossed or relief techniques, including:
Stone, Clay, Plaster, concrete and metal reliefs.
Introducing New Technologies, including:
Digital printing , Wall sticker or Self-adhesive mural, Light and Reflective, Solar, Digital Projection/Interactive Arts, Green or live or bio walls.
Art in Motion (painting on vehicle)
It is mentioned for each of above techniques following topics:
An overview of the history, design and implementation methods, providing the necessary materials and equipment, workshop conditions, safety tips, feature of surfaces, cost, durability, degradation factors , maintenance methods, features, advantages, disadvantages, and so on.
