well what a big old pile of shit that was (despite the late comeback, when they finally woke up), classic arsenal, that is to say it was one of those performances we tend to have 2 or 3 times a season where we play at home against someone we should beat comfortably, and then go out there with the attitude that we've already won before the kick off.
Message to Mr Wenger, Shay Given has been told he can leave Man City in January, so sign him, and that's the goalkeeping position sorted out.

Our players in the World Cup 2010-06-23 19:07:00
shag905
EDIT: Here are a list of the players who are already in the second round or have a chance to advance.

Vela: Second in Group A with Mexico and will play Argentina in the Knockout Round.
RvP: The Dutch lead the group and play Cameroon. They're in, question is will they win the group?
Bendtner: Denmark can make the second round with a victory against Japan. It's unlikely they will win the group, but can, provided a win by a large margin against Japan and the Dutch losing to Cameroon. We'll find out tomorrow.
Eboue: CIV can make the knockout stage with a win against North Korea, but it will take some help as Portugal, who are second are +7 in GD. Doesn't look good.
Cesc: Spain wins the group with a win versus Chile. Can finish second with a draw or loss, so long as Switzerland draws to Honduras or loses to them with Honduras not making up the GD (Spain is +1/ Honduras is -3)

5 players either in or have a chance. More out of the competition with other teams. But, while we're on the subject...

How Bout Them Yanks!!!

GUYS, WE ARE SO SCREWED.

It's highly likely Fabregas is NOT going to wear the red and white any longer next season.

Geez. Thanks a LOT, Cesc. Like, Arsenal totally needed you to bitch-slap them.

Sorry! >< Forget what I said... End of a long day where I am and I panicked when I saw it on the beeb's web page.

My apologies to everyone AND Fabregas.

So what now? 2010-05-18 19:31:00
davidmasters05
Fabregas appears to be on the way out.

What now? When we lost Henry, everyone said we'd be finished. We almost won the league that season.

Can the same be said for Fabregas? I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

You never know how players will advance in their career. Will Fabregas go to Barca and find himself surplus to requirements? Will he have played his best form for Arsenal?

Regardless, it's a big loss on the surface. How we deal with it will not be apparant until next season I suppose.

To be fair, the guy has one a single major trophy in the past seven years and has always said he wanted to go back. Could you argue that he gave us more of a chance than anyone else would've? I can't see the likes of Arshavin giving us that kind of loyalty if it came down to it.

I'm not going to dive into crisis mode until I see there as any reason for crisis. We won't win a trophy without a better squad, that was when we won trophies. If Pires got injured, we had Freddy, if he got injured then we had Hleb. If we get £35 million for Fabregas (Not enough in my opinion. £35 mill and Yaya Toure, fine), we need to go out and get a new goalkeeper.

He's said he's not particularly happy, he's not doing as well at his club as he could be doing at ours. With that said, I think we should throw it all at Buffon or Lloris.

Because in all honesty, what top class, ready-made midfielder are you going to get for £35 million? Arsenal won't even spend that much.

I'm confused.

In My Opinion... 2010-04-19 09:27:00
john_connolly
This season has been a terrible one.  Knocked out of all the cups, and dropped the title, like a cross to Fabianski.  I normally do not like to put the boot into our players, but this time i will make an exception.  Heralded as potentially one of the best keepers in the world, he has shown he is not ready for first team football at the Arsenal, and maybe will never be one for the first team.  However i will not just point fingers to point fingers.  Here is my take on what the man should do this summer, IF he is prepared to win anything.....

The Goalkeeping situation.

A Keeper is a must have, no doubt about it.  However the 2 of the 5 keepers we have been linked with this year, do not convince me any more than Almunia, 2 of them are young and could be prone to errors, and the 5th is perennially linked to the club.  Hart while having a good season, is too young, Green while the current England #1, just seems like the Hammers defense have little confidence in him when i have seen the hammers on the TV.  Loris could be a good one, and as for Sorensen, he played #3 to a Villa side that had Carson, and Taylor.  The last one is Frey, who is linked to us all the time, and if we were going in for him i think we would have done it a long time ago.  Out of those 5 i would go for Hart of Frey, but i doubt that either club will let them leave, but i would be relentless almost to the point of Tapping up.  We need a good safe bet for #1 keeper, and none of the 4 we have at the club convince me in the long term, or will be great in the long term, but not for now.

Regarding our current keepers at the club, i would keep them all.  Manuel Almunia is a good backup, and with Genuine Competition he might buck up his ideas.  With Lehmann at the club he was sublime, and when Fabianski didn't seem like a Liability he played well.  As soon as Lukaz was found out though, he started to get sloppy.  Genuine Competition would be good for him.  As for Manonne, and #53, i would farm them out to CHAMPIONSHIP clubs.  Coventry, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Q.P.R., and Preston always look for good loan keepers.  I would only send them out if they could be recalled and if only one went in summer, and the other in Winter.  Both have potential, but both are Raw.  Manonne showed what he can do against Fulham, and against Liege.  Also #53 is also playing out of his skin for Brentford, and while young, i don't believe he is quite ready for life in the Premier League.

Then there is Lukaz.  What to do about him?  Personally, i would like to see him go out on loan to Mid-Table, Lower League premiership club, to test him and see how he goes.  Its worked in the past for other premiership keepers who needed football.  He needs a run of games, and he might come good, but he needs a run, not the odd game here or there, with the pressure on.  One season with another club to make or break him.  If he sucks, let him go, if he comes good, let Almunia go.

The Defensive Situation.

First thing first.  Sol Campbell, and William Gallas, need new contracts as soon as possible.  Silvestre, and (as much as i hate to say it) Senderos need to also not be offered anything other than luck at their new clubs.  We will have 3 quality Center halves, but we know we need future re-enforcements.  Djourou, Like Fabianski, needs some time with another club to get some games in.  We have a good youngster coming through in Nordtviet, who has done well in Germany, but maybe not ready for the first team.  So what do we need to do?  Again Arsene needs to whip out the Chequebook, and sign a good solid DF.  We have been linked again with Brede Haangaland, and even Gary Cahill.  Some people were even linking us with the stoke thug, before he maimed Ramsey but the point is, we need someone who can back up Gallas and Vermalean as well as challenge them for the first team.  Campbell would be a good move to offer him not just a playing role, but offer him a job as a coach as well.

I like the look of our fullback situation to be honest, and with Gibbs looking good, he will keep the pressure on Clichy.  Eboue while not a world great, is a solid RB Cover for Sagna, hell he could even wrestle the staring slot off him.  However the competition needed, and the levelheadedness from some players, means that we need to be more cohesive.  This probably is the worst arsenal back 5 since the lineup of Lukic, Rose, Linigan, Garde, Marshall, we played in a game in 1997, but they were backups.  We have to shore up, and maybe Campbell will be more important than people think. (See Coaches)

The Midfield Situation.

What can you say?  This is our weak area.  At least our defense all the players are on an equal level, and if we are bad, we replace like for like.  However, without Cesc, and Ramsey, we have lacked work rate and flair.  Diaby has blown hot and cold, Denilson has been well Denilson, Merida has been off for a long time, and dispte his best efforts, Craig Eastmond is not ready now.  We have a lot of good youngsters coming through in Lansbury, Wilshire, and Thomas, but these guys have not got the quality to mount the first team sheet right now.  We need to bring in one solid, reliable midfielder, to play alongside Cesc, who can keep the midfield up when Cesc is out.  Song has been a revaluation this season, and with Diaby, and Denilson as backups, we will be ok.

The Front Line.

RVP, Bendtner, Nasri, Walcott, Arshaven, and Rosicky need to stay.  Eduardo is a shadow of himself, and Vela like Fabianski either needs a loan in England or needs to go.  He seems to me to be the Ghost of Jereme Aliadiarre.  With the coming in of Chamukh there are a few people who are on borrowed time.  Theo for example is on his last legs.  He needs to show what he can do over the next 12 months or thats it for me.  Rosicky has like Diaby, blown hot and cold, and RVP Bendtner and Arshaven while have been great when playing, have had too many injuries between them.

Bottom Line as for Squad.

We need to sign 4 players this summer.  1 solid CM and CB.  A top quality #1 keeper, and a Striker who is going to play 30 league games a season.  Anything more is a bonus, and while welcome, may not be needed.  We need to keep the players we have as backup, and maybe they will have the chance to step up.  People like Diaby, Denilson, Bendtner, Traore, need some competition to make it.  We need to sell people like Eduardo who in my opinion does not have it anymore, which is a shame.  Silvestre and Senderos also should not be in the first team, and should be allowed to leave.  Fabianski, Vela, and Djourou need some consistent first team football, with Fabianski and Vela having just one more chance to make it.

Additional - Wenger and the Coaches + Team Targets.

I mentioned something earlier in the article about Sol being offered a job as a coach.  This is a must.  Sol has a big game mentality, and also has passion whenever he pulls on an Arsenal Shirt.  Wenger would be a fool not to give this man a job coaching the Defense of the club, as he cant play forever, and if he can train that passion and mentality into the team, then its a must.  In the past Keown has com in to keep the team playing, and that also is a must.  Think about it.  2 of the invincables defense coaching the next generation of arsenal Back 4.

However he needs a complete overhaul of his methods, and his staff.  For example, there are many goalkeepers who have retired, and have shown the greatness of playing.  Jens Lehmann, David Seaman, and Nigel Martyn spring to mind.  These guys would and in Martyn's case, have made themselves into a top notch Goalkeeping coach.  Our other keeper coaches have included Mike Stowell, and now we have Gerry Peyton.  Nothing against them, but these guys very rarely played at the top level of the game, and as has been shown with the erratic form of our stick man, don't have it anymore.  We need a good solid veteran of the team, or level to make our keepers better.  Our whole coaching setup is mixed up.  We don't practice Set Pieces, and we dont have too much in the way of defensive coaching.  We need to operate stronger defensivly, and i personally think that we need to bing in a good goalkeeper coach, and a good defensive coach.

Now i am not one of the Rabble who is starting to buzz about having Wengers Head, but i am getting Frustrated.  Don't run before you can walk, and personally if i were Peter Hill-Wood/Stan Kronke/Usmanov, or whomever the Chairman will be this summer, i would demand at the very least an FA Cup.  No matter anything Else, the FA Cup must be in Cesc's hands in May of next year, at the bare minimum.  Can we win the Champions League?  No.  Not Next year, and while i think we should give it a go, i don't think that we should sacrifice the League, or the Cup in its pursuit.  IF we make the 4 signings we need, and any more that Wenger wants, and only let the bare minimum of players leave, we could be the force we want to be.  But it depends on what happens this summer.

Your Move Mr Wenger.....

those last 15 minutes can only be described as pathetic, time for a little bit of a clear out this summer me thinks, Fabianski, campbell and silvestre should go, Rosicky as well (I don't think he's been bad, its just that he's clearly not going to be what he once was), Traore (we've got Gibbs coming back, and if we got a good price for him Eduardo as well.

I'm Sorry, Almunia/Dear Mr. Wenger. 2010-04-14 22:46:00
davidmasters05
I like you, you have ability, but you're not good enough.

We probably won't win anything with you as our first choice. I would be entirely fine with you as our back-up keeper, but your continual inconsistencies were the second biggest reason we didn't win anything this season.

Dear Mr. Wenger,

I do not have any issues with our starting back four, unless Gallas becomes injury prone, then we do need a new first choice centre-back. I do think we need back-ups, though.

I do not feel we need a centre-mid, I am not one of those people. I do, however, have requests:

Despite my above comment, buy Fellaini or Arteta.

Eduardo, bless his soul, is not what he once was and despite increased faith in Bendtner, we only really have Van Persie. So...

Vela needs more pitch time, please see this through.

Get Wilshere back.

Do not take his comments for granted; make sure you nail Marouane Chamakh to a contract as soon as you possibly can.

Lastly, I never have been one of these people who feel you need to screw up the very precise system you have, but I will orally please you if you buy either Akinfeev or Lloris.

So, here's the deal.

My girlfriend and I are approaching our one year anniversary and, due to my sheer love of Arsenal, she wishes to embrace such love by going to games etc.

What guys here have ever bought their significant other an Arsenal shirt? How did it go down? For the females, would you consider that to be too much of a gift that I'd want her to have, rather than one she'd like? She's very much a Gooner now, and doesn't have a shirt. It'll be her first shirt since she moved her two years ago from the States.

Just figured I'd ask my fellow bretheren. It's not the SOLE gift, obviously, but as a nice aside I figured it might work out.

The Arsenal shop has a shitload of pretty classy stuff, so I'm not sure.

Also, COME ON YOU GUNNERS! Actually hope Van Persie starts taking the stadium off. Not just the net, the actual stadium.

Vermaelan Suspension 2010-03-20 21:00:00
a42abid
I don't want to get into details regarding the incident at the match but I'm curious about the length of suspension...

My question is this: is it a 3 match or a 1 match ban? I've heard arguments for both being paddled around amongst Arsenal fans. The press apparently hasn't formed an opinion on it and all I've read from a 3rd party is that - it's minimum 1 match but the FA can extend to 3.

Now, if the FA are even slightly embarassed at their standards of refeering (which, this season, have been piss poor on average and tolerable on a good day) they'd ensure that it was only a 1 match ban. Arsene also seemed kind of calm (as calm as a post match Arsene can be) so I'm hoping that its 1 match. That may be me just being hopeful though, don't know how much an incompetant decision and flying dive could ban a player for. You get 3 games for breaking a leg...so if we're being reasonable here, it shouldn't be a ban at all?

Lost any respect I had for West Ham today. I've been neutral towards them but the endless moaning and diving and fouling was the last straw. Hope they forever blow their stupid bubbles in the Championship.

Injured Fabregas ruled out of Porto tie

Cesc Fabregas has been ruled out of the Champions League Knockout Round second leg tie against Porto on Tuesday night.

The Arsenal captain suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury against Burnley on Saturday. Fabregas fired the home side in front in the 34th minute then hobbled off five minutes later. Afterwards Arsène Wenger had said he would be happy to risk the 22-year-old if the odds were in his favour. At Monday’s pre-match press conference, he confirmed that they were not.

"Cesc is ruled out for tomorrow's game,” said the manager. “He has a hamstring problem and we could not even take a gamble with him.

"I was hoping [he would recover] after the game because we were cautious with him. He was not adamant about coming out of the team but still he has damaged his hamstring and we cannot take a gamble on him.

“However we have gained Sol Campbell back in the squad and Alex Song too, who was suspended against Burnley.”

Wenger added that William Gallas is still out with a calf problem. “And,” he added, “he has no chance for the Hull game as well."
