US Tow Truck G506 Special Edition

MiniArt has re-visited their US Tow Truck G506 and released a special addition that includes some nice extras.

This release from Miniart offers a military built vehicle I suspect that has been purchased at wars end and put into civilian use. I believe the vehicle would have originally been a straight flatbed truck. A bin has then been installed for tall storage, and a hand operated crane for vehicle recovery. The vehicle has also retained in order so that vehicle could be dragged into position where the crane could be utilised. Typically for MiniArt, the chassis is a multi-part assembly and also features photo etched elements with complex shapes that need to be imparted to make this an easy task, MiniArt has provided formers to ensure that you can replicate the shapes accurately. In addition to a reasonably detailed gearbox and engine even the battery has been included for the vehicle, and with the firewall between the cab and the engine bay also being very nicely detailed. The engine will require some wiring to be added, depending on how much accuracy you wish to impart.

The loops that support the axles are separate pieces, and so be very careful when removing them to avoid breakage. The front axle does not have articulated steering provided. The vehicle is provided with 8 tyres, with 3 on each of the corners, which I suspect would have made the steering very heavy. This vehicle having been one I would believe to have been in military service, needs some wear and tear imparted into the cab - in particular the bench seat. The dashboard has a number of decals that need to be applied, that replicate the instrument dials. All of the pedals, steering and gearshifts have been accurately replicated I believe. The doors of the cab, can be shown open or closed and due to separate door cards the door windows can be shown up or down. MiniArt has provided the ability to accurately depict the bonnet in the up or down position. However, I would suggest that you need to be comfortable with the use of photo etch in order to utilise all of these features. The grille protection is offered in the choice of multi-part photo etch with former or an injection moulded plastic part which will do the job but is obviously a little bit thicker.

The bed of the truck has a nice level of detail as regards the finish of the textured surfaces. This also applies to the storage bin, which can be shown open or closed. You are going to encounter some more very fine photo etch, which needs bending into fairly complex shapes - mostly due to their size. However, if you are up to the challenge it will look good. While MiniArt has provided twin front wheels, it should be remembered that some of the finishing options only require a single wheel. The front powered winch has a moulded cable detail on the drum, I would suggest that this would be better if sanded away and a cable of your choice added - as it will also hide the join seam of that drum. The crane is a fairly easy build, due to it being a manually operated option - there are some photo etch elements to make it a little more difficult. But a particularly nice touch is an actual chain included for the crane. So you maybe wondering having heard this, “What makes this a special edition?” and that is answered by the inclusion of tool boxes that can be shown open or closed and that contain photo etched spanners and the like. Also provided is a vice, a grease container with pump and a fuel container. Another unusual item, is a hand operated grinding wheel - which may go into your spares box but that is up to you.

4 finishing options are included in this release:

Texas 1940s

Nevada 1940s

Ohio 1940s

Kansas 1940s

This offers you a good selection of colours to finish you model, and once you impart some wear and tear, maybe even some dinks and dents you have the ability to have a very eye catching and detailed model.
