Where was the PaleoAmerind standstill?

After many years and much effort searching Beringia for the ancestors of Amerinds (PaleoAmerinds)... more After many years and much effort searching Beringia for the ancestors of Amerinds (PaleoAmerinds), archaeologists are empty-handed. Beringia certainly was the pathway for later peoples (Na-Dene and Inuit), but there is no persuasive evidence of an archaeological culture in Beringia during the last glacial maximum (LGM) when archaeologists expect an early, pre-Clovis culture group and biologists detect a long period of isolationdthe "standstill." In this article, I show that archaeologists defer to biologists for proof of concept, and biologists use that deference to support their outmoded model that Beringia, or even greater Siberia, was the sole route by which all Native American people entered the hemisphere. I propose that the standstill took place in the Americas and that the pathway taken by PaleoAmerinds was by the Pacific Ocean, possibly from Southeast Asia.

Archaeological Roots of Human Diversity in the New World: A Compilation of Accurate and Precise Radiocarbon Ages from Earliest Sites

A compilation of 63 stratigraphic situations with evidence for human presence and two or more rad... more A compilation of 63 stratigraphic situations with evidence for human presence and two or more radiocarbon ages older than 10,500 B.P. has been processed to increase the accuracy and precision of the estimated ages and to compare their distributions at hemispheric scale. The compilation was developed to perceive patterns of population expansion and to plot early sites in their temporal and geographic order. The use of radiocarbon dates as data, criteria for inclusion in the compilation, the statistical processing methods used, and effects of controlling for precision and accuracy are described. The results indicate three earliest mean ages with great distance from each other in North and South America by 12,000 B.P., slightly later mean ages in Alaska, and the abrupt occurrence of Fluted and Fishtail Point sites at the beginning of the Younger Dryas climatic reversal (YD). Mexico off northwest Florida, has enabled the reconstruction of portions of the karstcontrolled p... more Mexico off northwest Florida, has enabled the reconstruction of portions of the karstcontrolled paleodrainage system, the discovery of several inundated prehistoric archaeological sites, and the exposure of sediments accumulated during the drowning of the continental shelf. Diagnostic artifacts discovered at the sites included chipped stone tools and debitage indicating Paleoindian, Early Archaic, and Middle Archaic occupation. A geoarchaeological model using terrestrial analogs was used to locate and investigate inundated sites. Methods employed include seismic profiling, vibracoring, diver tow surveys, diver collection transects, and induction dredge excavations. We document evidence for sea-level rise, related environmental succession and site formation processes for indundated prehistoric sites in the Apalachee Bay region from approximately 8000 to 6000 yr B.P. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Locational and attribute data on Paleoindian materials from all across the Americas are now being... more Locational and attribute data on Paleoindian materials from all across the Americas are now being posted on a Web site located at http:pidba.utk.edu We encourage our colleagues to contribute to this effort by submitting information they would like to see posted in hardcopy or electronic form. All data and contributors will be fully referenced and acknowledged. At present distributional data on ca. 20,000 Paleoindian projectile points from Canada, the United States, and Mexico are posted, together with measurement data for several thousand Paleoindian tools, mostly fluted or unfluted projectile points, blades, and other tool types. In addition to attribute and distributional data, the Web site also includes links to drawings, photographs, 14C dates, bibliographic references, and other Paleoindian Web sites. The Paleoindian Database of the Americas (PIDBA) Web site is a work in progress that we plan to markedly expand. We have the resources to enter data from hardcopy records, and are...

The case study is Chassahowitzka Springs in Citrus County, where an archaeological investigation and monitoring recovered significant archaeological remains, including wooden carvings and canoe paddles.

This paper briefly describes progress made in finding and investigating prehistoric sites in open... more This paper briefly describes progress made in finding and investigating prehistoric sites in open ocean settings over the continental shelf of Northwestern Florida. It presents an example of “deep” water survey near the proposed “Clovis Shoreline” (40 meter isobath) conducted in 2000 and 2001, as well as submerged prehistoric site archaeology practiced in shallower water in Apalachee Bay since 1986. A significant number of sites and artifacts have been located on Florida’s western continental shelf as part of this programmatic research. These sites represent Paleoindian and Archaic occupations of the shelf when it was exposed by lowered sea levels during the last glacial maximum.
