Narrative inquiry is a qualitative research methodology. It is relatively new to social science r... more Narrative inquiry is a qualitative research methodology. It is relatively new to social science research and it is little known to many researchers and practitioners of ped-agogy. Its aim is to study individual and group experience and to understand it narratively. It appears that narrative inquiry is a useful tool to explore both learning and teaching experiences, particularly in non-traditional, student-centered pedagogies. Baker and Bucic (2009) used autoethnography to gain insight into teaching with problem-based learning from a student’s perspective. This research was undertaken in order to assess autoethnography as a method in the context of Singapore’s Republic Polytechnic’s unique one-day-one-problem Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. This study serves two purposes: 1. To promote the methodology of narrative inquiry and specifically autoethno-graphy in PBL related research, and 2. to inform fellow facilitators about the application of the method. As a result it was found that the method is suitable, but requires a change of mindset and associated training. Since the 1970s, the Australian government has seen the information and communication technology ... more Since the 1970s, the Australian government has seen the information and communication technology industry as a viable industry for promotion and investment. This paper attempts to empirically evaluate policy initiatives geared towards geographical co-location through a survival analysis of Internet consultancy organisations that were in operation in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory between 1996 and 2003. This will be augmented by anecdotal evidence through interviews done with representatives of organisations sampled from the dataset. It will be shown that co-location in Australia does not offer the necessary resources for survival as predicted by locational economics. Rather, organisational networks that transcend physical displacements are of more importance in ensuring organisational survival.

Activities and pursuits in leisure worlds often occur within subcultural contexts. Subcultural st... more Activities and pursuits in leisure worlds often occur within subcultural contexts. Subcultural studies, however, have often premised the formation and existence of subcultures on the local. Wider local cultures have often been thought to have an impact on these subcultures. Even where subcultures have been 'imported' into a particular locality from another local setting, the focus has often been on how the subculture has been 'localized' by the 'importing' locality. This study offers an alternative perspective on leisure subcultures, with reference to the advent of the Internet as a new Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The Internet will be shown here to allow subcultural identities to be made flexible, where various local subcultural identities are able to fuse into a global subcultural identity, or retain their local flavours, as the situation permits. The case study of hip-hop music consumers in Singapore and their involvement in virtual communities on the Internet will be used to show the fluidity in identity formation and maintenance brought about by this new ICT. It will be shown here that local cultures and the globalized hip-hop culture which is associated with African American culture is evoked variably according to the specifics of the interactions of these hip-hop consumers in virtual communities.
This article looks at the musical landscape in Singapore where, as it will show, there is a segme... more This article looks at the musical landscape in Singapore where, as it will show, there is a segmented market for popular music. In other words, there is a correspondence between social groupings and specific genres of music. In fact, there is little evidence of the blurring or crossing of boundaries. Two social groupings will be chosen to illustrate the situation-Malays and hard rock/heavy metal, and middle-class Chinese youth and what is often referred to as "indie rock". I will contend that both of these social groupings consume the genres of popular music that have been associated with them through a cycle of alternating habituation and choice, and that the implicit contempt they hold for each other also manifests itself through abstinence from the musical genre associated with the Other; in other words, consumption is used as a method of maintaining difference or as a weapon of exclusion (Hebdige 1988, 110). Consumption and abstinence will therefore be demonstrated to be equally conspicuous and socially consequential . This strategy of differentiation had its beginnings in the late 1980s and has persisted to the present day. This illustrates how cultural taste reinforces symbolic boundaries (see, for example, Bryson 1996), and although there is also a class dimension, as will be shown, the case in question does not follow the familiar trickle-down/trickle-up mimetic paradigms described in other works (see, for example,

This article looks at the popular music industry in Singapore and argues that there exists a 'cul... more This article looks at the popular music industry in Singapore and argues that there exists a 'cultural cringe' for domestic English-language music, which is considered as inferior to English-language music from Western countries. Singaporean consumers of popular music use the English language as a signifier of authenticity and consequently quality of musicians. Local musicians are deemed 'inauthentic' because consumers perceive the local variant of English spoken in Singapore is inferior to other variants of English spoken in Western countries. There is thus an underlying sub-text of an inferiority complex coming out of the post-colonial experience that effectively diminishes the possibility of success as English-language musicians. Yet, such a phenomenon is not observed in the vernacular Malay and Chinese-language music industries. In the final analysis, this article suggests that modernisation and modernity for Singapore is neither completely localised nor completely imposed: there exists a negotiation in the popular cultural sphere based on historical (colonial) baggage. This paper will argue that two recent important policy initiatives that concern the information and communication technology industry are influenced by the idea of an impending post-industrial economy and observations of the business environment of Silicon Valley. It will firstly discuss a policy initiative towards investment funding through the creation of 'incubators' that is informed by early-age liability theories of organisation. It will secondly discuss the policy initiative towards replicating the business environment of Silicon Valley through the creation of technology parks that is informed by the paradigm of locational economics. Arab entrepreneurs in Singapore from the time of their first recorded arrivals in 1819 until the 1850s were concentrated in the consumer goods industry. The exit of the Arabs from consumer goods provision saw them moving into the real estate industry in the 1880s, where they remained concentrated until the 1940s. By the 1970s, however, no visible concentration of Arab entrepreneurs could be discerned. This paper argues that the entry and exit of Arab ethnic entrepreneurs into and out of consumer retail and real estate investments may be better explained with reference to political-economic conditions which facilitate movement than embedded personal relations that enact a chain-link pattern of industrial mobility.
Storytelling is an age-old tradition that is found in every culture. Stories capture the essence ... more Storytelling is an age-old tradition that is found in every culture. Stories capture the essence of the morals, attitudes and world views through the characteristics of the characters in the story, the story arc and the moral resolution of the story. Stories are told to pass down information from the older generation to the younger generations. Stories were told and retold as primary ways of retaining cultural information in the days of past before the advent of written language. Stories later became codified through the medium of written language and commercialized through theatre and moving pictures. This book is accordingly entitled Sonic Storytelling. In this book, we look at how stories are told using musical tones and rhythms, instead of words. I especially anchor sonic storytelling within the context of jazz because it is only in jazz that one finds the express intellectual effort to tell stories through song. Jazz has a story. Jazz tells a story. With every reharmonization, jazzers are changing the context of the story. With every improvisation, jazzers are plotting a new story arc for the main character(s). Let’s create our own sonic stories. Let’s learn how to reharmonize and improvise. There is a method to the jazz madness.
