Effective media education requires that teachers have sufficient media literacy competencies as well as the competencies to promote media literacy in students. This article describes the development of a questionnaire to measure these competencies individually or as a team. The questionnaire was developed in five stages. A systematic and critical listing of existing inventories resulted in a preliminary questionnaire. In the final stage, the questionnaire was submitted to a representative sample of 454 teachers and 219 student teachers, and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted. The results show that the questionnaire is sufficiently valid and reliable.

Zusammenfassung Um die Medienkompetenz ihrer Schüler steigern zu können, müssen Lehrer und Dozenten der Lehrerbildung diese Kompetenzen zuerst selbst erwerben. Das Forschungsprojekt Media Didactica hat einen einzigartigen konzeptuellen Referenzrahmen für Studierende, Lehrer und Dozenten der Lehrerbildung entwickelt mit dem sie ihre Medienkompetenz persönlich oder auch im Team analysieren, beurteilen und entwickeln können. Over the last decades researchers and educators have promoted the use of language in collaborative activities in the classroom. Accordingly, there is considerable support for the sociocultural idea that knowledge is the result of a co-constructed activity of students, and that exploratory talk can support them to develop higher-order thinking, high-level understanding, the voicing of personal opinions and ideas, and argumentation skills. Positive learning effects of exploratory talk have inspired researchers all over the world to replicate, refine or elaborate on these early studies, using both quantitative and qualitative methods and often finding similar positive linguistic, cognitive, social, psychological, and pedagogical effects. In this study we present a narrative review into the definition, measurement, and effects of exploratory talk. The review is both a part and an extension of a PhD study on the use of exploratory talk in primary schools in Flanders, the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. Based on this review we will highlight the relevancy of exploratory talk and associated challenges for L1 education in a globalising, diversifying and digitalising context. We will argue that exploratory talk can meet these challenges, but its potential can only be realized fully by a shift towards dialogic teaching as opposed to the IRF/IRE-pattern which still seems to dominate classroom practice.

This study analyzes the integration of an educational technology platform and relates the difficulties faced amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially, we sought to identify the chief barriers educators face when considering the adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Factors influencing primary and secondary education teachers’ (n = 15) and students’ (n = 335) perspectives on ICT integration for mathematics instruction were identified and analyzed from the perspective of different contexts (school vs home) and circumstances (in-person vs remote learning). Although we acknowledge the need for immediate decisions by educational stakeholders to facilitate online learning, our findings indicate the necessity of (a) careful examination of the features of potential platforms or tools and (b) a trial of such features prior to integration within an educational system. From an instructional design perspective, educational technologists should pay special attention to the degree of gamification, especially beyond the primary school level, as it may negatively impact incentives for student interaction and engagement. Where possible, the integration of technology should be driven by pedagogical goals and not technological pressures.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Athanasios Christopoulos (Ph.D., Computer Science) is a Research Fellow in the Department of Computing at the University of Turku, Finland. Dr. Christopoulos is currently working for the Centre for Learning Analytics where he investigates matters related to digital inclusion, educational technology advancement, immersive technologies and learning analytics. The Centre is also developing "ViLLE", a digital learning platform that includes content and exercises for studying mathematics, programming, and languages (Finnish, English). Pieter Sprangers (Doctoral candidate in Educational Design) has over 25 years of experience in teaching, educational design, and educational leadership both in Secondary and in Higher Education Institutions. Besides his teaching duties, his research activities in the domain of "scientific educational design research" focus on the redesign of educational systems.

Kazerne Dossin is een museum, memoriaal en documentatiecentrum over de Holocaust en de mensenrechten, met als focus het verhaal van de Joden- en Zigeunervervolging tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in België. Een belangrijke maatschappelijke doelstelling van het museum is het actiefbijdragen aan een dynamiek van depolarisatie in onze samenleving. Deze bachelorscriptie gaat diep erin op de vraag hoe een museumbezoek aan Kazerne Dossin kan leiden tot het beoogde effect van depolarisatie. Daarbij gaat de aandacht naar de polarisatietheorie van Bart Brandsma, die als theoretisch kader dient voor de werking van het museum. In een kritische filosofische analyse wordende sterke en zwakke punten van deze theorie onderzocht. Ten eerste wordt aangetoond dat de theorie van Brandsma waardevolle inzichten biedt om een museumbezoeker mee te nemen in een maatschappelijke dynamiek van depolarisatie. Vervolgens worden twee aspecten geanalyseerd die inde theorie van Brandsma onderbelicht blijven: de sociale mechanismen van kennisverwerving en de structurele rol van geweld in een samenleving. De conclusie van deze scriptie luidt dat de maatschappelijke doelstelling van Kazerne Dossin moeilijker te verwezenlijken valt dan de theorie van Brandsma doet uitschijnen.

Polarisatie is alomtegenwoordig en neemt toe in onze versplinterde samenleving. Alles wordt zwart of wit, een oorlog tussen goed en kwaad. Dit terwijl de werkelijkheid altijd genuanceerder is, maar nuance wordt niet (meer) gewaardeerd in een wereld vol nepnieuws. Met als gevolg dat we in een wereld leven van ontwrichting en onrust. Maar hoe komt het dat grote groepen mensen zich gewillig laten misleiden? Vele depolarisatie-strategen hebben al een antwoord proberen formuleren op polarisatie, door in te zetten op het organiseren van een rationeel discours, zoals een ontmoetingsmoment tussen individuen en groepen. Echter is polarisatie een zeer complex en hardnekkig fenomeen. In deze scriptie neem ik u mee op wandel in mijn persoonlijke zoektocht naar de kern van polarisatie. Oorspronkelijk kende deze scriptie een praktijkmoment, maar wegens omstandigheden is dit gedeelte niet doorgegaan.

Deze masterscriptie gaat dieper in op de vraag: “In welke mate kan een rationeel discours polariserend werken?” Hierbij keer ik terug naar mijn inzichten uit mijn bachelorscriptie uit 2020 waarbij ik kritiek lever op de praktische polarisatietheorie van Bart Brandsma. Vervolgens toon ik u in het tweede hoofdstuk de weg aan hoe ik middels het Hannah Arendt Instituut ben gekomen tot mijn onderzoeksvraag. In het derde hoofdstuk formuleer ik een antwoord op mijn onderzoeksvraag op basis van de linguïstische propagandatheorie van filosoof Jason Stanley, die ik sterk met inzichten van Hannah Arendt. Tot slot reflecteer ik over mijn zoektocht in mijn slotbeschouwing waarin ik mijn eigen visie over een depolarisatie-aanpak verduidelijk. Concluderend besluit ik dat zelfs een rationeel discours, hoe onschuldig en aanvaardbaar het ook lijkt, op onbewuste en zelfs onbedoelde wijze kan bijdragen aan polarisatie.

Bislang existiert noch keine systematische Erforschung des Nationenbildes von Belgien im deutschsprachigen Raum (Grünewald, 2018; Roland, 2014). Diese Informationen sind aber für Übersetzer*innen und Dolmetscher*innen interessant, um die Kenntnisse und Einstellungen des Zielpublikums über die originalsprachliche Kultur beim Übersetzen berücksichtigen zu können. Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Datenbasis zu diesem Thema erweitert, auf der Folgestudien zum Nationenbild Belgiens aufbauen können. Es gibt keine eindeutigen Forschungserkenntnisse zum Belgienbild der Deutschsprachigen: Aus einigen individuellen studentischen Untersuchungen (De Kerpel (2015); Hoste (2013); Vereecke (2013)) ergab sich ein neutrales bis positives Belgienbild bei deutschsprachigen Studierenden unterschiedlicher Universitätsstädte, De Brabant (2018) und Buckens (2017) berichteten im Bereich des Journalismus hingegen über ein negatives Belgienbild in der deutschen Presse. Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert methodologisch auf den Studien von Jansen (1993), Hoste (2013), Vereecke (2013) und De Kerpel (2015) und folgt einem Mixed Methods-Ansatz: Zuerst wurde eine Online-Befragung durchgeführt, wonach eine Fokusgruppendiskussion, die auf den Ergebnissen des Fragebogens basiert, organisiert wurde. Bei der Untersuchung des Nationenbild Belgiens wurde besonderer Wert auf die vier Komponenten des Nationenbildes nach Jansen (1993) gelegt: Einstellung, Interesse, objektive Kenntnisse und subjektive Kenntnisse. Im Allgemeinen konnte bei den Studierenden in Germersheim ein positives Belgienbild festgestellt werden. Die Befragten stehen Belgien positiv gegenüber und assoziierten vor allem Positives wie Kulinarisches und die Europäische Union wird mit dem Wort „Belgien“. Das Interesse an Belgien ist mäßig bis hoch, was dem eher geringen objektiven Kenntnisstand gegenübersteht. Da in dieser Studie nur deutschsprachige Studierende in Germersheim befragt wurden und sie eine Momentaufnahme ist, wären weitere Befragungen anderer Teile der Bevölkerung und in anderen Regionen notwendig, um Aussagen bezüglich des Belgienbildes im deutschsprachigen Raum verallgemeinern zu können.

This case study explores the connections between diversity and translated adult literature in the library of Heusden-Zolder. Cultural diversity is omnipresent and has many advantages for humanity, according to UNESCO (UNESCO & UN, 2005). This makes it necessary to analyse the expression and interaction of diversity in real-life settings such as libraries. Since translations enable diversity (Sapiro, 2010), it is useful to gain insight into translation flows. In this manner, this kind of research can contribute to the debate on globalization (Heilbron, 1999). Heilbron (1999; 2000a; 2000b) already examined intraduction into and extraduction from Dutch, but only for the Netherlands, which leaves no information in this discourse for Flanders. This paper draws theoretically Heilbron (1999; 2000a; 2000b), De Swaan (2002), Bourdieu (1992), Latour (1997; 1998) and Mani (2017) and thus supplements, from the perspective of the sociology of translation, data on the language system, the translation system, bibliomigrancy and the Actor Network Theory (ANT). Both quantitative and qualitative data provide the foundation for the analysis. For the quantitative data collection, data from the online public catalogue of the library of Heusden-Zolder and data from the Index Translationum (UNESCO, 2010) were gathered with special focus on three central languages (English, French and German) and three peripheral languages that correspond to the three most common migration backgrounds in the city Heusden-Zolder (Turkish, Bulgarian and Italian). This methodology is based on the case study of Ursu & Cuza (2014). The quantitative data are combined with qualitative data from the interview with the manager of adult literature at the library of Heusden-Zolder. This paper shows that the global translation flows and the specific translation flow "extraduction to Dutch" do not correspond with the offer of translated adult literature in the library of Heusden-Zolder. Although the hegemony of English is confirmed, the proportions of the other source languages differ from the data of the Index Translationum (UNESCO, 2010). In this respect, the diversity of the book offer can be seen as both diverse and non-diverse, depending on the point of view. It was also discovered that the library's book offering does not reflect the population of Heusden-Zolder and that European languages dominate the book offer. The most common migration backgrounds (Turkish, Bulgarian and Italian) (Statbel, 2021a; Statbel, 2021b) are not represented in the book offer, showing that little account is taken of linguistic diversity. Nevertheless, it was found that the library tries to promote diversity in different areas (such as genres, subjects, etc.).

Door de jaren heen is er al veel onderzoek gevoerd naar wat een goede taalleerkracht precies is. Over het perspectief van middelbareschoolleerlingen is er echter weinig te vinden. Uit literatuurstudies blijkt dat het beeld van de ideale taalleerkracht voornamelijk georiënteerd is op het Engels en grotendeels louter kwantitatief onderzocht werd door leerkrachten te bevragen.
Dit onderzoek heeft als doel een beeld te krijgen van wat leerlingen uit verschillende richtingen uit het zesde en zevende jaar in het secundair onderwijs als goed taalonderwijs ervaren, door hen te bevragen over hoe zij de ideale taalleerkracht zien. Op die manier tracht deze paper adviezen over goed taalonderwijs te formuleren die de leerlingen voor talen motiveren. Deze adviezen zouden als inspiratiebron kunnen fungeren om het taalonderwijs te optimaliseren. De gegevens voor het leerlingenbeeld van de ideale taalleerkracht werden verzameld aan de hand van explorerende, semigestructureerde focusgroepsgesprekken (Baarda et al., 2021; Dresing & Phel, 2018; Morgan, 1997b). In totaal werden uit zestien focusgroepen van ongeveer dertig minuten, verspreid over steden en dorpen in heel Vlaanderen, gegevens verzameld en getranscribeerd volgens het systeem van Dresing en Phel (2015).
Uit de gesprekken blijkt dat dat leerlingen belang hechten aan taalleerkrachten die, naast de taal die ze aanleren, ook het Nederlands hanteren in hun lessen, leerlingen niet afstraffen op foute antwoorden en bereid zijn om leerstof te herhalen. Verder maken ze gebruik van leuke activiteiten en (digitaal) lesmateriaal, houden ze rekening met de tempoverschillen binnen hun klasgroepen en laten ze leerlingen aan de slag gaan met de doeltaal, waarbij authentieke situaties een groot pluspunt zijn. Tot slot moeten de taalleerkrachten gemotiveerd zijn en een passie tonen voor de taal die ze aanbrengen aan hun leerlingen.
