In traditional scanning electron microscopy ⁄ energy dispersive X-ray analysis of gunshot residue... more In traditional scanning electron microscopy ⁄ energy dispersive X-ray analysis of gunshot residue (GSR), one has to cope more and more frequently with limitations of this technique due to the use of lead-free ammunition or ammunition lacking heavy metals. New methods for the analysis of the organic components of common propellant powder stabilizers were developed based on liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS ⁄ MS). A multiple reactions monitoring scanning method was created for the screening of akardite II, ethylcentralite, diphenylamine, methylcentralite, N-nitrosodiphenylamine, 2-nitrodiphenylamine, and 4-nitrodiphenylamine, present in standards mixtures. Five out of seven of these target compounds can be selectively identified and distinguished from the two others with a high accuracy. Samples from the hands of a shooter were collected by swabbing and underwent solid phase extraction prior to analysis. Detection limits ranging from 5 to 115 lg injected were achieved. Results from several firing trials show that the LC-MS ⁄ MS method is suitable for the detection of stabilizers in samples collected following the firing of 9 mm Para ammunitions.

Increasing Forensic Awareness of CBRNE Responders and CBRNE Awareness of Forensic Experts: A Pan-European Challenge

Since a few years, the risks faced by forensic experts of being confronted with CBRNE-type hazard... more Since a few years, the risks faced by forensic experts of being confronted with CBRNE-type hazards have increased significantly, together with the terrorist activities in Europe’s cities. Likewise, the work in and around an ever-increasing number of clandestine drugs labs is a safety concern to first responders who are badly trained in the handling of these still-active but abandoned labs. A growing concern for these hazardous situations is observed within the EU in the form of development of increased preparedness, education and training, research and innovation. The FP7-sponsored GIFT-CBRN project delivers specific tools and procedures to assist forensic investigators to perform a crime scene investigation under CBRN conditions. The project will also provide training curriculums for first responders, crime scene investigators and managers, forensic laboratory personnel and magistrates. Equally important is the fact that forensic specialists and first responders are made aware of each other’s responsibilities, capabilities and priorities in the handling of a CBRNE situation. The European Network of Forensic Science Institutes is pushing forward this awareness building with a pan-European campaign, introducing novel training programs. It is working together for this with organizations widely recognized for their expertise in the CBRN community. The authors will describe these programs and offer practical insights for those interested to attend future trainings.

Since 2008, our laboratory has adopted a systematic approach to the examination of gunshot residu... more Since 2008, our laboratory has adopted a systematic approach to the examination of gunshot residues (GSR) in casework by analysing, whenever possible, the inorganic composition present in ammunition (cartridge cases and unused ammunition). By compiling the results of these analyses in a database, it is possible to observe some trends during the period of interest: on the one hand, the prevalence of primers containing lead, barium and antimony is about 50%, and even as high as 70% when including lead-barium-antimony based primers also containing tin; on the other hand, the prevalence of non-toxic primers is for the time being very low. Still using the same approach, test firings were performed with recovered weapons and litigious ammunition whenever possible in order to estimate the influence of the well known &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;memory effect&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; of the weapons on the GSR analysis results. The first results show a quite strong memory effect for the .22 and the .32 caliber, unlike the .38 caliber. This is probably due to a high prevalence of lead-barium-antimony based primers for the latter caliber.

Within the framework of the ENFSI Expert Working Group Firearms/GSR a novel proficiency test on t... more Within the framework of the ENFSI Expert Working Group Firearms/GSR a novel proficiency test on the Forensic Determination of Shooting Distances -FDSD 2015 -was implemented. This proficiency test was developed out of collaborative studies which were previously carried out by a number of pre-selected ENFSI laboratories. The aim of this test was to assess the laboratories' performance in visualizing the lead patterns on a shot object, and compare the questioned patterns with provided test shot patterns. The participating laboratories were requested to estimate the presumed shooting distance following their individual laboratory specific methods (SOPs) for shooting distance/muzzle-to-target determination. The submitted results were compiled by means of z scores according to the IUPAC and EURACHEM guidelines, and an extended statistical evaluation was performed. This is one of the first proficiency tests in the field of qualitative forensic methods where z scores were successfully utilized. This paper summarizes the results of the study and presents the overall performance of the participating laboratories.
