So I had a good Thanksgiving, how about you guys? Both my brothers were home, and we played a lot of Wii, and I pulled some arm muscles "running," which was vaguely humiliating. The weird thing about Nintendo Wii is that it's a video game system my parents can play, so we had a lot of family time doing that. My dad is weirdly good at the long jump in the Mario Olympics. I don't even know. We also went to the movies -- my dad and brothers all wanted to see No Country for Old Men, and my dad, knowing that my mom and I didn't want to see it, said to rockstar!bro, "Well, maybe we can see that one, and the girls can see Enchanted instead." Me and my mom, overhearing, were like, HEY. But, uh, then that's exactly what we did. What can I say, sometimes you do in fact want to see the princess movie instead of some stupid gritty realism Cormac McCarthy movie, even if it is vaguely insulting when male family members suggest that. Ha. (And, I must say, my mom and I were in MUCH better moods coming out of the theater than the boys were, so whatevs!)
Being at my parents' house was also weirdly like going to Television Cultural Exchange Sleepaway Camp or something, because I watched a lot of TV I do not normally watch, and saw an awful lot of fandom alumni unexpectedly. Luke from Gilmore Girls on Aliens in America! Jayne from Firefly on Chuck! Sookie from Gilmore Girls on Samantha Who?! Faith from BtVS on Ugly Betty! Matt from Seventh Heaven on Samantha Who?! (shut up) Rachael Harris from the Daily Show on Notes from the Underbelly! I-I'm glad to see all you guys are working?
Unfortunately, now I too am back working. :-( And today in the class I help teach, like half the professor's lecture was unexpectedly directly related to storylines in my life to a degree that actually really creeped me out. Like, is it just me, or has whoever's writing the script of reality lately gotten really lazy and unsubtle? It's practically season 4 of Buffy all up in here. Is this because of the writer's strike?
Voting here in the People's Republic of Massachusetts is always kind of bizarre. In several races, my choice wasn't between Democrat and Republican, but between Democrat and the Socialist Worker's Party. Oh, Boston, never change.
Amy Sedaris is giving a reading this week, and I went to get a free ticket today, and they were all out!! :-((((((((((((( I am so sad all my mouths are frowning.
You know what is a surprisingly funny show? How I Met Your Mother. I just started watching lately, and the other week they had an episode where there was fake marriage and straight boy dating, as though it was designed to be my Kryptonite. I also like how you can pretend it's a giant crossover, where Doogie Howser and Willow Rosenberg and Nick Andopolis all hang out with the poor man's Jimmy Fallon and his girlfriend. Does anyone else watch it?
Oh, hey, if any of you guys have del.icio.us accounts with different names than your LJ names, let me know what they are!
moireach's brother and his girlfriend are up visiting and staying with us, and last night we turned Apples to Apples into a drinking game, which I then proceeded to win (unfortunately and I still believe illegitimately - YOU GUYS WERE TOTALLY PLAYING TO LOSE, WHATEVS. As an aside, that game is EVEN FUNNER when you're totally wasted and nobody's putting down words that make any sense. Though you'll regret it in the morning). Winning meant I did ten shots of bourbon, plus two beers and a hot chocolate with Bailey's, and so, weirdly, I don't feel that awesome today. What are the odds? At least I didn't throw up, which is more than our guests can say. Haha. Maybe we shouldn't have let the 19-year-old do shots. Well, LIVE AND LEARN.
The sitcomathonfics are up! There's so much good stuff it's kind of stressing me out to try to read them all. I haven't at all gotten through everything, but preliminary recs include: Not in Love With the Modern World by sophia_helix (Office, Jim/Ryan) - Jim and Ryan get stoned. Shut up, I am dreaming of places where lovers have wings by mazily (Office/Sports Night, Jim/Pam, Jim/Dan) - Great crossover, really interestingly structured. Mockumentary by kerrypolka (written for meeeeeee, Arrested Development/Office, Michael Bluth/Maeby, Jim/Pam) - Just completely hilarious, perfect crossover, two of my requests at once - amazing, amazing, amazing. Ryan Howard is no longer a temp by swmbo (Office, Ryan/Kelly) - Ryan and Kelly go on the Amazing Race. Heeeeee. The Life and Times of a Temporary Employee by kyrafic (Office/Arrested Development, Gob Bluth/Kelly Kapour) - Oh man. We'd talked before about how awesome it would be if Gob came to the office, and this does it so well. It's totally hilarious and perfect.
All those fics are great, even though my recs are pretty inadequate and hungover, so you should read them despite me. Oh, and I wrote one too: M*A*S*H, Hawkeye/Peg.
Oh, and I signed up for yuletide, for the first year ever, like a crazy person. (Writing in ficathons is not my preferred method of writing, in that I'm kind of terrible at it, but I loooove small fandoms, SO.) Anyway, I gather it is conventional to address your yuletide secret santa, so, ( dear yuletide secret santaCollapse )
Also, the Borat movie is the hardest I've laughed in a theater in a long, long time.

It's really feeling like late summer/early fall here, which I am NOT okay with. It's still August! Dammit, New England! I mean, today it actually feels really pleasant out, so I shouldn't be complaining, but it's getting dark earlier, and school is about to start, and all that makes me saaaaaaad.
What makes me happy, though, is that we're moving into our gorgeous new apartment this week! I just went by and picked up the key from our hot, tall, responsible new landlord, Nick. He lives downstairs, and seriously, did I mention that he is extremely hot? Also, he repainted all the rooms of the place for us, and is replacing the floorboards on the deck, and is generally being awesome. He lives with someone named Max - for awhile, we weren't sure whether Max was male or female (Max = our Blaise Zabini, really). Now we're pretty sure he's male from the voice on the answering machine (Max has yet to be seen), so the only remaining question is: Max & Nick - roommates or boyfriends?
So apparently, there is a DVD challenge going on where people do commentary on other people's fic! And general_jinjur really graciously did commentary on a BtVS Wishverse fic I wrote a loong time ago. I haven't reread the fic in forever, and I winced a little bit at some parts I would do really differently now, but it's totally interesting and flattering to see what someone else has to say about it.
Office fandom right now is kicking my ass with its awesomeness - you guys should all read honey_wheeler's strange bedfellows, a sad and hot and ridiculously in character Meredith/Michael, and kyrafic's Fact: Ninjas are Mammals (Pam/Dwight), which features the most hilarious drunk Dwight I have ever seen in all my days.

So last weekend I was sitting in the airport waiting for my flight south for spring break, surrounded by the usual assortment of college students and businessmen and whatever - I wasn't paying much attention, I was just reading. Then I hear the businessman sitting next to me say into his cell phone, "Yes, hi, this is John Kerry." And I'm all, what now? But that's probably a common name, right? But no, it was failed presidential candidate John Kerry, traveling all by himself without a bodyguard or even a secretary, making about a hundred phone calls, sitting ONE SEAT OVER WAITING FOR MY FLIGHT. And it was a really small plane without even a first class section, and it turned out that he was also seated in row 9, with me. It was one of the more surreal experiences of my life. Then I suffered some kind of famous person blackout, and when I was sitting down I said, "Oh, hi, Mr. Kerry," really casually, like he's someone I run into all the time, and then I think I said something about being a big admirer? Which is perhaps not strictly true, but I did vote for him, so. Oh God. "Admirer." I don't know what's wrong with me.
Anyway, obviously I then text messaged half the people I know, and then took a picture with my phone and picture messaged that as well. Everyone on the plane was acting really cool, like it's not at all a big deal to fly to Jacksonville with someone who COULD RIGHT NOW BE FLYING ON AIRFORCE ONE. He ate peanut butter crackers and read the newspaper. When he got off the plane he was met by two guys in polo shirts who didn't even offer to carry his bags. I guess senators carry their own luggage these days, I don't know.
Here is a picture. It is kind of blurry because MY HAND WAS SHAKING because I am just that awesome.
So. That was the glamour of my break, I guess. Otherwise it was all reading on the beach and doing nothing and I seriously need about another month of it. Now I'm back home and grading. Blah. At least it is totally warm here, like summer might be coming, and people are cheerful and I think I just might not die of stress, which is something to be celebrated.
