According to Donovan, “arguably, these years entailed the greatest changes that had ever occurred in any women’s lives. For the first time women were allowed into universities; for the first time, into professions such as medicine. For the first time women had a genuine opportunity to leave the world of traditional woman – the home – and the traditional roles of wife and mother” (43). Thus, “The Revolt of ‘Mother’” can be seen as a feminist story.

Nowadays it is normal for young students to visit other countries or study abroad. This phenomenon is making more and more intercultural families and bilingual children. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze how their social interactions happen. There are two perspectives which study this kind of interaction: “(i) ethnicity and different cultural backgrounds determine speakers' discourse strategies (different ways of speaking, different ways of structuring in formation, etc.); (ii) different discourse strategies and communicative styles can lie at the heart of interethnic misunderstandings” (Sarangi 411). This interactional-sociolinguistic perspective deserves credit for locating communicative problems for analysis.

Bram Stoker had many feminine role models in his life, which led him to protect and believe in women's ability to develop in personal and professional life, and this belief can be seen in his novels. Taking into consideration Freeman's definition of feminism, this paper will discuss how Bram Stoker portrays feminism through his novel and the characters in it. The setting of the Victorian Era and the view of women's roles in society will also be discussed in this study, as well as the importance of such novels for both Victorian and modern women. Key words: Bram Stoker, The Jewel of the Seven Stars, feminism, Victorian Era

Although it can be seen as an old technique, studies about it are fairly recent. There is a differentiation in the methodologies used to teach literature as language and literature as art. This dissertation focuses on Literature as language. Scholars have been analysing the problems teachers face in the classroom when teaching language using literature as materials. However, many of the theorists seeking to identify the problems faced by classroom teachers were not engaged in empirical studies and had not collected empirical data. For this reason, it is relevant to investigate if the works available in the body of research approach the correct issues teachers face in the classroom nowadays.
The research focuses on two different groups with different student and teacher profiles in Londrina, Brazil. The methodology used for the research was the application of a survey answered by teachers from both groups, with questions about their professional background, as well as problems faced in the classroom. The questionnaire was created based on a literature review of works of previous scholars who researched the use of literature in the classroom. In the findings, although many of the problems found have already been approached previously by other scholars such as motivation, lack of linguistic ability and relevance to students’ aims, it was concluded that one problem which had not been suggested by previous scholars was the difficulty of combining the use of literary texts with the pressure of having to follow a syllabus and finish the course book in a short period of time.

One of the current discussions in the field is about Learner Autonomy, which has been a theme for discussion for over 30 years (Holec, 1981; Dickinson, 1987; Holec, 1988; Little, 1991; Dam, 1995; Smith, 2000; Benson, 2001; Palfreyman and Smith, 2003; Lamb and Reinders, 2006; Benson, 2007; Little, 2007; Lamb and Reinders, 2007; Barfield and Brown, 2007; Burkert and Schwienhorst, 2008; Little, 2009; Borg and Al-Busaidi, 2012).

Several approaches have been tested since the 1950’s, from the audiolingual approach, which was basically teacher-centered and focused on accuracy and pronunciation, to more modern approaches and methodologies, such as task based learning (TBL) and the communicative approach, which are more student centered and focused on using language to accomplish tasks rather than correctness.

The spread of internet around the world brought people of many nationalities together, starting the English as a Lingua Franca phenomena. Nowadays there are more non-native speakers of English than Native ones. For this reason, it is crucial to evaluate new methodologies for teaching English to speakers of other languages in the face of globalization. This essay aims at discussing and evaluating current studies in the field.

The protagonist, trapped in a loveless marriage on an isolated farm, feels neglected by her husband and drawn to his friend, Steven. As a snowstorm rages outside, her internal conflict intensifies, mirroring the cold and desolation of her surroundings. The story echoes themes found in Kate Chopin’s A Respectable Woman, highlighting the emotional needs of women in relationships. The ambiguous ending leaves readers questioning whether she acted on her desires, but her overwhelming guilt remains. This review argues that the story challenges traditional gender roles, emphasizing the need for emotional fulfillment in marriage and advocating for women’s autonomy in their personal lives.

Set at a party where English is the dominant language, the story highlights themes of cultural imperialism and identity struggle. The protagonist, raised in a traditional Indian household, feels alienated in this Westernized environment, reflecting broader questions about globalization’s impact on local traditions. The review discusses how language carries cultural significance and critiques the dominance of American culture over others. While acknowledging the benefits of cultural exchange, it argues that true pluralism requires balance rather than submission. The story ultimately challenges readers to reflect on their own cultural identity, questioning whether they unconsciously adopt foreign influences or actively preserve their heritage. Through this analysis, the review underscores the need for cultural coexistence rather than cultural erasure in an increasingly globalized world.

Through recurrent themes in discussions that blame the failure of the educational process only to the structure and/or to the qualification and capability of the teacher, this analysis aims at making visible an obscure aspect in which the student, as part of this dynamic, has an overriding role in the failure or success in the classroom. Through a theoretical discussion, initially, over discussed themes are put in the spotlight as means to introduce in this discussion context a new possibility. In this Picture the objective is to understand how strong the role of the student is, since, as the teacher, the student is the protagonist of countless actions inside the classroom. In this sense, this paper aims at emphasizing the relationships configured in the classroom by students and teachers recognized as “power relations”, that direct the pace of a lesson in its positive or negative aspect. Finally, this paper will focus on answering two questions: Do student-teachers recognize they do not have enough knowledge to teach? And do student-teachers acknowledge the power students have over the teaching process?

It examines key distinctions between general English (GE) and exam-focused (EX) instruction, highlighting the importance of balancing teaching with testing, mitigating negative backwash, and fostering learner autonomy. A needs analysis (NA) and diagnostic test (DT) identified learners’ linguistic gaps and exam-related difficulties, forming the basis of a structured, learner-centered course. The syllabus integrates exam strategies, vocabulary expansion, grammar accuracy, and self-study techniques, supported by formative and summative assessments. The study emphasizes the necessity of engaging materials, technology, and collaborative activities to maintain motivation. While the course successfully enhances learners’ exam performance, its limitations include time constraints and the exclusion of other FCE components. Overall, the essay underscores the effectiveness of a tailored, reflective approach to exam preparation.

This MA project examines the effectiveness of the Inglês sem Fronteiras program, specifically its online learning platform My English Online (MEO), which aims to improve English proficiency among Brazilian students. Given the increasing global importance of English, proficiency is a key requirement for participation in government-funded exchange programs like Ciência sem Fronteiras. However, many students face challenges in achieving the necessary language skills. This study analyzes the didactic materials, program structure, and student performance on international proficiency exams to assess whether the platform meets its objectives. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines qualitative analysis of course content with quantitative data on student outcomes. Findings will contribute to the development of more effective online language learning tools and enhance accessibility to English education. The project aims to support the democratization of language learning in Brazil, ensuring students are better prepared for academic and professional opportunities abroad.
