It&rsquo;s been quite a wild ride the last four...","description":"<h2>two weeks<\/h2><p>Last Monday, I put in my notice at Tumblr. It&rsquo;s been quite a wild ride the last four years but, alas, it is now my time to move  on to a new challenge like many Tumblr engineers before me. Tumblr has been an absolutely amazing place to work and has challenged me in ways that I would have never expected.<\/p><p>I&rsquo;ve never really&hellip; quit a job before (Tumblr is my first &ldquo;real&rdquo; job!) but, fortunately, I had <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@brianmichel\/efficiently-quitting-5f4bf5b2db6a\">this amazing article by @brianmichel<\/a> to go off of! After reading it a few times, I think I found a good path to efficiently quit and leave behind a good amount of my knowledge.<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><h2>the first week<\/h2><p>The day I gave notice, I posted on one of <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/p2\/\">our internal P2 blogs<\/a> that I was leaving and I was looking for documentation requests. Over the years, the Tumblr Security Team has worked on an absolutely incredible amount of projects and, since I was the last member of the team left, I wanted to get all of the historical knowledge out of my head. I also started working on bringing the hackday project that @continuants and I worked on to life. I cut tickets, set some strict-ish deadlines, and got to work.<\/p><p>On Wednesday, I actually sat down and made a list of projects, processes, and services that I was the last one left who had knowledge of. This ended up being a list of ~45 things (woah!). For each of these things, where applicable, I pointed to up-to-date documentation\/references and made tickets for the ~7 things that were missing documentation. I also started transferring over my &ldquo;important&rdquo; team documents over to the new manager of the Core PHP team at Tumblr.<\/p><p>In the same effort, I also found all of the alerts &amp; email addresses &amp; other things that were only monitored by me and made a giant checklist to kick off the discussion of\u00a0\u201cdo we need this?\u201d and, if so, who they should go to. This approach seemed to work pretty well as there was some instant discussion and some alerts that were pretty instantly transferred.<\/p><p>By Friday, I had a functional version of my final Tumblr project in production and had written documentation for (most) of the things that were undocumented! At that point, I was able to set myself up for a successful second week of finishing up my project and taking as many meetings as I possibly could!<\/p><h2><br\/><\/h2><h2>the final week<\/h2><p>At the start of my final week at Tumblr, I started redirecting as many requests as I could to do a good test run of what it would be like without me (plus, ya know, I was busy! \ud83d\ude05). I think doing this as soon as I possibly could was a really good idea because it poked holes in the runbooks that had been previously written and provided a chance to figure out who was the new point of contact. As Brian put in <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@brianmichel\/efficiently-quitting-5f4bf5b2db6a\">his post<\/a>, it&rsquo;s &ldquo;a dry run of what it&rsquo;s going to be like when [I] actually leave&rdquo;.<\/p><p>Then, I set up some appointment slots on my calendar for &ldquo;coffee&rdquo; (on a Google Meet) and that filled up my calendar pretty quickly! It was really nice to chat with folks one last time before I left. I also did a final round of 1:1s with my team to say goodbye and tie up any final loose ends before I left.<\/p><p>On top of that, I was able to wrap up my project nicely with completing some feature requests from the end users and write some documentation about it to boot. It\u2019s been 634 days since Botham Jean was murdered by a police officer, 233 days since Atatiana Jefferson was fatally shot by a police officer, 2,123 days since Michael Brown was fatally shot by a police officer, and 2,146 days since Eric Garner was choked to death by a police officer.\u00a0<\/p><p>It has been five days since Tony McDade, a Black trans man from Florida, was shot and killed by a police officer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>At the time of this post, it has been almost 19 hours since David McAtee was shot and killed by the authorities.\u00a0<\/p><p>This week has served as a stark reminder that those who have power in this country wield it recklessly and violently against Black people, non-Black POC, and trans people. For some, the power is found in their badge. In others, it\u2019s their skin tone, their socio-economic status, their cisgender privileges, or any other number of privileges one can have. In 2018, with at least 26 trans people who were murdered, all but one was a trans woman, and all but one was a person of color. According to data collected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/violence-against-the-transgender-community-in-2018\">Human Rights Campaign<\/a>, this pattern is all too common. It should also be noted that the number of trans people who are murdered is grossly underreported, with many families and newspapers often misgendering those who can no longer speak up for themselves.\u00a0<\/p><p>On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall riots began as a response to the constant police raids of nightlife establishments frequented by the LGBTQIA+ community. That night sparked a revolution, with <a href=\"https:\/\/equalityarchive.com\/history\/transgender-women-of-color-at-stonewall\/\">many eye-witnesses<\/a> crediting Black and Latinx trans women for being brave enough to ignite what would become one of the most pivotal nights in LGBTQIA+ history. Without Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, there would have been no uprising. Without them, there would be no Pride.\u00a0<\/p><p>At this moment, it would be tone-deaf and insensitive to commemorate Pride in the same celebratory fashion we usually do. Instead, we\u2019re asking you to make the commitment to better the lives of the oppressed.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blacklivesmatters.carrd.co\/#educate\">Do the work<\/a> to become actively anti-racist if you are not Black. You are the reason people turn to Tumblr for a laugh or for a little human connection. You are why Tumblr feels like a home for so many. You care about this place, and you let us know when something doesn\u2019t feel right. Many of you have called on us to further reevaluate how we deal with hate speech, particularly hate speech from Nazis or other white supremacist groups. Today we\u2019re letting you know that we heard you, and we are taking further action.<br\/><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve listened to your feedback and have reassessed how we can more effectively remove hateful content from Tumblr. In our own research, and from your helpful reports, we found that much of the existing hate speech stemmed from blogs that have actually already been terminated. While their original posts were deleted upon blog termination, the content of those posts still lived on in reblogs. Those reblogs rarely contained the kind of counter-speech that serves to keep hateful rhetoric in check, so we\u2019re changing how we deal with them.<\/p>\n<p>We identified nearly a thousand blogs that were previously suspended for blatantly violating our policies against hate speech. Most of them were Nazi-related blogs. Earlier this week, we began the process of removing all reblogs stemming from the original posts on those previously suspended blogs\u2014that\u2019s approximately 4.47M reblogs being removed from Tumblr.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, we will evaluate all blogs suspended for hate speech, and consider mass reblog deletion when appropriate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Consulting outside experts\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>We wouldn\u2019t make a change like this without considering the impact to your freedom of expression. We do not want to silence those who are providing educational and necessary counter-arguments to hate speech. We reviewed our approach with a variety of outside groups and experts to make sure we have aligned with their recommended best practices. <br\/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no silver bullet solution, AI, or algorithm that can perfectly target hate speech. That\u2019s why we have a dedicated Trust &amp; Safety team, and why we have an easy way for you to report any hate speech you do see.<\/p>\n<p>If you see something on Tumblr that violates our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/policy\/en\/community\">Community Guidelines<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tumblr.zendesk.com\/hc\/articles\/226270628-Reporting-offensive-content\">please report it<\/a> to our Trust &amp; Safety team for review.<\/p>\n<h2>Lastly\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>We are, and will always remain, steadfast believers in free speech. Here\u2019s a smattering of goodies in the update:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dark mode is now available on the web! Along with a few other color schemes, too. Just click the silhouette figure in the upper right corner and then click \u201cChange Palette\u201d to cycle through all of \u2018em.<\/li>\n<li>You can now view your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/likes\">likes page<\/a>\u00a0in the default view or in the new grid view.<\/li>\n<li>Same with any tagged pages. Here, try it out with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/frog\">frog tag<\/a>. A glorious grid.<\/li>\n<li>Copying the link to a post, reporting a post, or blocking someone whose content you don\u2019t enjoy is easier than ever. Just click the meatballs menu (\u25cf\u25cf\u25cf) \u00a0in the upper right corner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of these visual changes are obvious, but the biggest transformation is the one you can\u2019t see. This wasn\u2019t just a facelift, we completely updated the web interface. The old one was outdated\u2014over a decade old. Adding features to it wasn\u2019t always easy, fixing bugs wasn\u2019t always quick. It was clear that we needed to update the whole dang thing. So update the whole dang thing we did. The result? A faster Tumblr. The experience is smoother, it\u2019s easier to add new features, and we\u2019re able to squash any pesky bugs quicker than before. <\/p>\n<h2>XKit<\/h2>\n<p>This kind of web interface change means that some of your Tumblr browser extensions may not work. We understand how important these extensions are to those of you who want to customize your Tumblr experience as much as possible. Throughout this process, we\u2019ve stayed in close communication with the people over at <a class=\"tumblelog\" href=\"https:\/\/tmblr.co\/mGq13BpxFcGGwpQa0aOzrTw\">@new-xkit-extension<\/a> to make sure our update was one that they could work with. We provided them with APIs they needed to begin moving over to this new platform. This also gave us the opportunity to discuss the benefits their extension brings to the community. Having their input on what makes their service valuable to the people who use it has been a true treat, and one we are grateful for. While XKit isn\u2019t an official Tumblr tool, it\u2019s one we know is dear to many of you, and we don\u2019t take that lightly. The reblog puts someone else\u2019s post on your own Tumblr blog, acting as a kind of signal boost, and also giving you the ability to add your own comment to it, which your followers and anyone looking at the post\u2019s notes will see. Reblogs can also be reblogged themselves, creating <a href=\"https:\/\/best-of-reblogs.tumblr.com\/\">awesome evolving reblog trails<\/a> that are the source of so many memes we love. But what is a reblog <i>trail<\/i> versus a reblog <i>tree<\/i>, and how does it all work under the hood?<\/p>\n<p>A \u201creblog tree\u201d starts at the original post (we call it the \u201croot post\u201d internally at Tumblr) and extends outwards to each of its reblogs, and then each reblog of those reblogs, forming a tree-like structure with branches of \u201creblog trails\u201d. As an example, you can imagine <a class=\"tumblelog\" href=\"https:\/\/tmblr.co\/mr_BTLFg8QzTPUMVSbe3vbg\">@staff<\/a>\u200b making a post, and then someone reblogging it, and then others reblogging those reblogs. I can even come through and reblog one of the reblogs:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\" data-orig-height=\"473\" data-orig-width=\"600\"><img src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/4ec274918fbd448f51761ec277db05f3\/d0852d3a38029fc7-2c\/s540x810\/1b61eb5efebd06b2e067c996ce1b9f3b556c376d.png\" data-orig-height=\"473\" data-orig-width=\"600\"\/><\/figure><p>A \u201creblog trail\u201d is one of those branches, starting at the original post and extending one at a time down to another post. In the reblog trail, there may actually be some reblogs that added their own content and some that didn\u2019t \u2013 reblogs that added content are visible in the trail, while the intermediate ones that didn\u2019t may not be visible.<br\/><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\" data-orig-height=\"473\" data-orig-width=\"600\"><img src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/6ada985fc834182a8066d00e6a9d94e7\/d0852d3a38029fc7-26\/s540x810\/e1ba40846e483910aaf29c7238f525181ebacbe4.png\" data-orig-height=\"473\" data-orig-width=\"600\"\/><\/figure><p>You\u2019ll notice that the reblog trail you\u2019re viewing somewhere (like on your dashboard) doesn\u2019t show all of this reblog tree \u2013 only part of it. If you open up the notes on any wildly popular post, you\u2019ll probably see lots of reblogs in there that you aren\u2019t seeing in your current view of the post\u2019s reblog trail. The above diagram shows the whole reblog tree (which you don\u2019t see) and the current reblog trail you\u2019re actually viewing (in orange). If you want to visualize a post\u2019s entire reblog tree, the reblog graphs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/settings\/labs\">Tumblr Labs<\/a> experiment shows off these reblog trees and trails as kind of big floppy organisms. They\u2019re a useful visualization of how content percolates around Tumblr via reblogs. You can turn on the experiment and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/settings\/labs\">see it on web only right now<\/a>, but here\u2019s an example:<br\/><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\" data-orig-height=\"780\" data-orig-width=\"786\"><img src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/c0d97c3dd79f61144fabd6a0dc6b4313\/d0852d3a38029fc7-d1\/s540x810\/0281e87072896c56cc385c84073d5079a95157ec.png\" data-orig-height=\"780\" data-orig-width=\"786\"\/><\/figure><p>The tiny orange dot is the post we\u2019re viewing, and the green line is a reblog trail showing how the post got reblogged along many blogs. And there are tons of other branches\/trails from the original post, making dozens of different reblog trails. This is a much larger, more realistic example than my simplified diagrams above. You can imagine that my diagram above is just the start of one of these huge reblog trees, after more and more people have reblogged parts of the existing tree.<br\/><\/p>\n<h2>Storing Reblog Trail Information<\/h2>\n<p>The way we actually store the information about a reblog and its trail has changed significantly over the last year. For all posts made before this year, all of a post\u2019s content was stored as a combination of HTML and properties specific on our Post data model. A specific reblog also stored all of the contents of <i>its entire reblog trail<\/i> (but not the whole reblog tree). If you have ever built a theme on Tumblr or otherwise dug around the code on a reblog, you\u2019ll be familiar with this classic blockquote structure:<\/p>\n<pre><code>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a class=\"tumblr_blog\" href=\"http:\/\/maria.tumblr.com\/post\/5678\"&gt;maria&lt;\/a&gt;:&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;blockquote&gt;\n    &lt;p&gt;&lt;a class=\"tumblr_blog\" href=\"http:\/\/cyle.tumblr.com\/post\/1234\"&gt;cyle&lt;\/a&gt;:&lt;\/p&gt;\n    &lt;blockquote&gt;\n        &lt;!-- original post content --&gt;\n        &lt;p&gt;look at my awesome original content&lt;\/p&gt;\n    &lt;\/blockquote&gt;\n    &lt;!-- the reblog of the original post's content --&gt;\n    &lt;p&gt;well, it's just okay original content&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;\/blockquote&gt;\n&lt;!-- this is the new content, added in our reblog of the reblog --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;jeez. thanks a lot.&lt;\/p&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>This HTML represents a (fake) old text post. The original post is the blockquote most deeply nested in the HTML: \u201clook at my awesome original content\u201d and it was created by <code>cyle<\/code>. There\u2019s a reference to the original post\u2019s URL in the anchor tag above its blockquote tag. Moving out one level to the next blockquote is a reblog of that original post, made by <code>maria<\/code>, which itself adds some of its own commentary to the reblog trail. Moving out furthest, to the bottom of the HTML, is the latest reblog content being added in the post we\u2019re viewing. With this structure, we have everything we need to show the post and its reblog trail without having to load those posts in between the original and this reblog.<\/p>\n<p>If this looks and sounds confusing, that\u2019s because it is quite complex. We\u2019re right there with you, but the reasons behind using this structure were sound at the time. In a normal, traditional relational database, you\u2019d expect something like the reblog trail to be represented as a series of references: a reblog post references its parent post, root post, and any intermediate posts, and we\u2019d load those posts\u2019 contents at runtime with a <code>JOIN<\/code> query or something very normalized and relational like that, making sure we don\u2019t <i>copy<\/i> any data around, only <i>reference<\/i> it.<\/p>\n<p>However, the major drawback of that traditional approach, especially at Tumblr\u2019s scale, is that loading a reblog could go from just one query to several queries, depending on how many posts are in the reblog trail. Some of the reblog trails on Tumblr are <i>thousands of posts long<\/i>. Having to load a thousand other posts to load one reblog would be devastating. Instead, by actually copying the reblog trail content every time a reblog is made, we keep the number of queries needed constant: just one per post! A dashboard of 20 reblogs loads those 20 posts, not a variable amount based on how many reblogs are in each post\u2019s trail. This is still an oversimplification of what Tumblr is really doing under the hood, but this core strategy is real.<\/p>\n<h2>Broken Reblog Trails<\/h2>\n<p>There is another obvious problem with the above blockquote\/HTML strategy, one that you may have not realized you were seeing but you\u2019ve probably experienced it before. If the only reference we have in the reblog trail above is a trail post\u2019s permalink URL, what happens if that blog changes its name? Tumblr does not go through all posts and update that name in every copy of every reblog that blog has ever been involved in. Instead, it gracefully fails, and you may see a default avatar there as a placeholder. We literally don\u2019t have any other choice, since no other useful information is stored with the old post content.<\/p>\n<p>At worst, someone else takes the name of a blog used in the trail. Imagine if, in the above example, <code>oli<\/code> changed his blog name to <code>british-oli<\/code> and someone else snagged the name <code>oli<\/code> afterwards. Thankfully in that case, the post URL still does not work, as the post ID is tied to the old <code>oli<\/code> blog. The end result is that it looks like there\u2019s a \u201cbroken\u201d item in the reblog trail, usually manifesting as the blog looking deactivated or otherwise not accessible. This isn\u2019t great.<\/p>\n<p>As a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.tumblr.com\/post\/179080448939\/new-public-api-and-neue-post-format-documentation\">the rollout of the Neue Post Format<\/a> (NPF), we changed how we store the reblog trail on each post. For fully NPF reblog trails, we actually do store an immutable reference to each blog and post in the trail, instead of just the unreliable post URL. This allows us to have a much lower failure rate when someone changes their blog name or otherwise becomes unavailable. We keep the same beneficial strategy of usually having all the information we need so we don\u2019t need to load any of those posts along the trail, but the option to load the individual post or blog is there if we absolutely need it, especially in cases like if one of those blogs is somebody you\u2019re blocking.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tumblr\/docs\/blob\/master\/npf-spec.md#reblog-trail\">played around with reblog trails in NPF<\/a>, you\u2019ll see the result of this change. The reblog trail is no longer a messy nested blockquote chain, but instead a friendly and easy to parse JSON array, always starting with the original post and working down the trail.
