Luke kept looking at the clock. It was a quarter to midnight. He knew Reid was going to be late.
Reid had asked one of the nurses to call and explain that an emergency had come up so Reid had to stay and scrub in.
Just this morning Luke had teased Reid that he would probably not make this anniversary
either. Reid was very persistent that he would not miss it this time. "The whole hospital knows that I will only work until five o'clock today, Luke. I am not on call. There are other doctors to handle emergencies. I will be home on time today.”
Luke knew that Reid would like to be home for their fourth anniversary. But how could
Reid come home early when there was a patient being brought in who would have a much
better chance of a full recovery with his help.
Kim had overheard Reid speak to Chris about not being able to cover his Friday night shift this
time because he could not miss another one of those special celebrations.
She discreetly pulled Luke aside and asked how he was handling being with a chief of staff who was always being called back to work. But Luke told her honestly that they were doing great.
Sure Reid was being called away at times when Luke did not want to see his partner leave. But they both made sure that they spent the time they were together with attention only for each other. Their smart phones were turned off and people knew that they could onlybe reached for emergencies on their landline if they did not answer their phone.
And Reid made sure that everyone, including Luke, knew what was to be considered an
emergency.
Reid was always there when Luke really needed him. He did not need Reid to celebrate with
him. It was good knowing that they got to reach their anniversary without one of them needing a
break .
Luke did not even realize how insecure he became during his relationship with Noah. He now accepted his insecurity as be part of the reason why he was so, well, idiotic was the most appropriate word,
when Reid first admitted he wanted more from Luke. He definitely did
not believe Reid would want to stay with him if he really got to know him. He had already made it clear that he did not like a lot of aspects about him. Noah knew all his faults and even though he always broke up with Luke, he also took Luke back. After thinking during his teenage years that he would always be alone, even that sounded good.
Fortunately Luke found his brain again. He and Noah were not good together and even if Reid didn’t like Luke anymore after he got to know him better, he would still be happier with every week or month they would be together.
But even though Reid sometimes teased him about being spoiled or a drama queen, he never left. When Luke felt like he had really screwed up and they had their first big fight, he even told Reid that he would understand if he did not want to see him an more.
When Reid heard Luke say that he put his hand against Luke’s cheek and looked straight at him. "Luke, you made a stupid decision today. You should not have called me out of surgery saying it was important when it could have been dealt with differently. You made a mistake. I yell a little at you, you apologize, and then we kiss. I will always want to be with you.
You are the only one I would even leave an operating room for. I love you, you idiot.”
Every month they were together Luke felt more confident. Yeah, they were great. The fact that Reid could not always be there for birthday parties, celebrations or anniversaries was not a
problem.
So instead of being upset about a missed dinner reservation, when the door opened a little after midnight and Reid walked in, Luke got up from the couch and gave his man a warm
welcome home.
