He provides innovative interventional procedures guided by ultrasound or fluoroscopy (an imaging technique using continuous X-rays) to treat many chronic and persistent pain conditions. These include orofacial pain (such as trigeminal neuralgia), failed back surgery syndrome, facetogenic pain (involving the facet joints of the spine's vertebrae), neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndrome and pain associated with cancer.
Dr. Yu’s clinical background provides crucial insight into identifying research niche to improve patient care. Supported by the NIH, foundation grants, and intramural fundings, his research is focused on investigating the contribution of neuroimmune interaction between tissue resident immune cells and nociceptors to neuropathic diseases using both preclinical animal models and patient induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived disease model.
As a physician scientist, Dr. Yu is committed to inspiring brilliant, diverse trainees to pursue a career path to lead future academic medicine. He is the clerkship director of both Anes 140.06 and 130.01, and the director of resident chronic pain rotation. In addition to clinical mentoring, Dr. Yu has served as the research mentor of postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, NIH Diversity Supplement Award for predoctoral candidates, the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship, Pathway to Discovery Learner and Deep Explore Project.
